Lightroom: Introduction
1 So now we're gonna go into Lightroom, 2 and this is the new version of Lightroom. 3 And unlike the Lightroom Classic, 4 Lightroom is essentially a cloud-based service. 5 It wants to put things into the cloud. 6 And if we were to take our images 7 that we are going to import into Lightroom, 8 and if we just stuck in the card 9 and said, "import into Lightroom," 10 it would want to put those on the cloud. 11 But, Lightroom now has a new option called "local storage." 12 And so we actually have the ability 13 to either be cloud-centric or local storage-centric. 14 And I'm gonna show you both of them. 15 But first, I need to kind of give you a lay of the land. 16 So when we take our images from our card 17 and we put them into the disc, 18 we don't necessarily have to import them into Lightroom. 19 They could just sit on the disc for as long as we want. 20 And then we can import them into Lightroom. 21 The problem with doing it that way 22 is that Lightroom is going to have to make a c...
opy of it. 23 So Lightroom keeps its files in a very specific place. 24 And so if you were to take your images, 25 and you were to put them on a disc, 26 and then you were to import them into Lightroom, 27 it would then make a copy of them, 28 so now you have a copy on the disc, and you have a copy 29 wherever Lightroom wants to store its images. 30 And then, of course, 31 it's gonna send those images to the cloud. 32 And then it's gonna send those images 33 to your iPad and your iPhone. 34 And it's gonna send your images over to Lightroom Classic, 35 which is then going to put them in the hard drive, 36 so you will have this image in all locations. 37 You'll have it on the original drive that you put it on. 38 You'll have a duplicate 39 inside of Lightroom itself in its files. 40 You'll have a duplicate up here on the cloud 41 in the full resolution cloud. 42 Not in the "Smart preview" 43 because Lightroom sends the entire file, 44 the whole high resolution image up here, 45 so it's a full high resolution RAW up here in the cloud. 46 And then it sends the full resolution 47 down to your mobile devices, 48 assuming that you want the full resolution there 49 because you can turn that on and off. 50 And then also the full resolution down into a collection, 51 which is then put into your hard drive. 52 And so you have a full resolution on all of your devices. 53 And that's how Lightroom wants to work. 54 But this new thing called "local storage" here 55 inside of Lightroom allows us 56 to actually put the images on a hard drive 57 and just browse to them and look at them. 58 And then when we're ready, it allows us to take those images 59 and move them from the local storage 60 over to the cloud storage. 61 And this essentially makes a duplicate copy of those images 62 and then sends that duplicate copy up to the cloud as well. 63 And so it's kind of an interesting backup solution as well. 64 So when I take my images from my camera card, 65 I'm going to put them in the location 66 where they're supposed to be, 67 so I'm gonna put them into the actual hard drive. 68 Now, Lightroom, the new version of Lightroom has the ability 69 to just pull your images in straight from the card 70 and put them up on the web. 71 That's what it wants to do. 72 If you import them into Lightroom, 73 it will throw them up on the web. 74 But the problem is, 75 is if you have a limited space in your cloud storage, 76 maybe you have 200 gigabytes, or maybe you have a terabyte, 77 that's not enough to put every image 78 you ever shot up in the cloud. 79 And so you have to actually be judicious 80 about what you're allowing to go into Lightroom 81 if you're using the new version of Lightroom. 82 It's unlike Lightroom Classic. 83 We just talked about how Lightroom Classic 84 stores the images on the hard drive 85 and you have to choose to put the images up in the cloud 86 by putting them in a collection, 87 and then turning on the cloud link 88 and then it'll go up to the cloud. 89 So, and even when it does go up to the cloud, 90 it's actually being put over in this "smart preview" area 91 and it doesn't cost you any space. 92 Lightroom is unlike Lightroom Classic. 93 So Lightroom is actually going to 94 immediately want to take those images 95 and throw them up on the cloud 96 as full high resolution images. 97 So if you directly import your images, so you plug this in 98 and you directly import them into Lightroom, 99 this is the route it will take. 100 It'll go from here. It'll go straight into Lightroom. 101 Lightroom will store those images wherever you've told it 102 you want to have your Lightroom photos. 103 So it's called "Lightroom original photos," 104 or I think that's what they're called, 105 "Lightroom originals." 106 Anyway, the original photos are stored inside 107 of a very specific place on your hard drive, 108 whatever hard drive you choose. 109 And then it's gonna send them to the cloud. 110 And you have no choice about it. 111 If you put them inside of Lightroom as an import, 112 it's going to put them on the cloud. 113 And so you are going to take up that space. 114 But fortunately, Lightroom has a new workflow, 115 and this is new as of 2023. 116 And so it's not something that's been around for very long, 117 and it's a really great option. 118 It is called "local storage." 119 So the local storage option here 120 allows us to put images into a hard drive 121 and browse that hard drive in the same way 122 that we browse the hard drive from Lightroom Classic. 123 Although, Lightroom Classic is a bit different 124 because you're still pulling it in 125 and it's technically an import, 126 even though it's just kind of observing the images, 127 you have to import it. 128 Whereas Lightroom, the Lightroom local option 129 inside of the new version of Lightroom 130 is not actually importing anything. 131 It is kind of like looking at your images 132 in Bridge or a file browser. 133 It is literally just looking at the images 134 when you are looking inside that folder. 135 Very different than Lightroom Classic. 136 But it allows you to do a lot of work on the images, 137 to flag the images, star the images. 138 And then once you've gotten rid of the ones 139 you don't want to keep, 140 then you can move them over into the cloud storage area. 141 And once you do that, 142 it's going to make copy of those images 143 into the Lightroom originals folder 144 and put those on the cloud, which is a much smaller version, 145 or a much smaller collection of images 146 than the original collection that came from your card, okay? 147 So that's what you're about to see.
