Lightroom Classic Getting Started
1 We are going to start 2 with our image from our camera on a card, 3 and we are going to import that image onto a disc. 4 Now, in Lightroom Classic, 5 we put the image on a disc first, 6 and then we import our images from that disc. 7 Now, there is the possibility of just putting in a card 8 and letting Lightroom import it directly into itself, 9 but it's still going to put that image onto a disc, 10 and we'll talk about that whole process. 11 But essentially, your image goes on a disc, 12 and I prefer it to be an external disc, 13 not the disc that's inside the computer, 14 because there's no reason to fill up an internal hard drive 15 with a bunch of photos. 16 The internal hard drive is best used for things like cache 17 and for programs and for space for the computer to operate. 18 And then the external drive 19 is where you put those big voluminous photographic files. 20 So we're going to put our images inside of a disc, 21 and then Lightroom is going to look. 22 And you see, I...
put a little eyeball there 23 to represent looking at that disc. 24 So when we import images into Lightroom, 25 we are essentially just looking at that disc. 26 It's importing the images by virtue of looking at them 27 and then referencing what is there. 28 Essentially, it's like if you went to college 29 before the year 2000, 30 it's like a card catalog in the library. 31 The books are not in the card catalog. 32 The card catalog just references the books 33 that are on the shelves. 34 If you went to college after the year 2000, 35 it's kind of like Amazon, I suppose. 36 The products are not on the website in Amazon. 37 Amazon is just referencing where those products are. 38 It knows what they are, it knows all about them. 39 It knows what they look like, 40 and it's referencing, you know, a product over in California 41 and another product in China, 42 and another product on, you know, 43 in Bangladesh or something. 44 And so it's referencing all of these different products. 45 And then when you request that product, 46 it goes and finds the product and then brings it to you. 47 So either way, take your pick, new or old school. 48 Lightroom Classic is simply referencing something 49 that is not inside of it. 50 It's outside of it, it's over here on a disc, 51 and it's going to pull it in when necessary. 52 It's gonna call it up, reference it, 53 figure out what's there, 54 and then it's gonna pull it in only when it needs it. 55 Otherwise, it can kind of operate on its own 56 without the photograph being inside it 57 because it has the reference, all right? 58 Now, part of the way that we deal with images inside 59 of Lightroom Classic is through a collection. 60 And collections are the only way in Lightroom Classic 61 that an image can get from Lightroom Classic to the cloud. 62 And this is unlike the other versions of Lightroom. 63 And so this is important to know 64 that it is through our collections 65 that we put our images onto the cloud. 66 So as we turn on our collections to the cloud, 67 they get sent up into the cloud, 68 but they get sent to a very specific area of the cloud. 69 And this is also a difference of Lightroom Classic 70 from all the other versions of Lightroom. 71 When you upload images through the collections 72 up to the cloud from Lightroom Classic, 73 it puts them in what's called a smart preview storage area. 74 That's different than the other versions of Lightroom 75 that put their full high-resolution image up in the cloud. 76 Whereas from Lightroom Classic, it's just a smart preview. 77 And a smart preview is still a raw image, 78 but it's a very small raw image, 79 and so it doesn't take up as much space. 80 And therefore, and here's the bonus, 81 Lightroom cloud does not see a smart preview 82 as something that takes up space. 83 And so I can put a million images from Lightroom Classic up 84 into the cloud and it won't take out any space. 85 So if I have one terabyte of space in the cloud 86 and I put a million images from Lightroom Classic 87 into the cloud, I still have a terabyte of empty space 88 because smart previews don't count against 89 my storage allotment and that's really important. 90 If I then put those images into the cloud, 91 and you can see that this smart preview 92 is going to be identified by a dashed line around, 93 notice that it's a full high-resolution image here 94 on the card and on the disc and as it goes into Lightroom. 95 But then it's a smart preview when it reaches the cloud. 96 And from there, the moment an image gets put into the cloud, 97 it starts getting shipped out 98 to all the other versions of Lightroom. 99 So it's gonna come down here to my phone 100 and to my iPad as a smart preview. 101 So it's not the full version, 102 and it's going to be inside of a collection, 103 but we call them Albums down here inside of Mobile. 104 And so it's in the Iceland Collection or Album, 105 and it is a smart preview that's on this device. 106 So this device can hold this smart preview. 107 And I now have that image not only on my desktop computer 108 and my iPad, but I also have it over here on the laptop 109 because it came from the cloud 110 and it went down to a album inside 111 of Lightroom on my laptop. 112 And I can set up my preferences of Lightroom on my laptop 113 to also store that file into a hard drive 114 that is either connected to the laptop or on the laptop. 115 And it is going to be a smart preview as well. 116 So it's a smaller version of that file, it got sent up. 117 The original is still on the desktop computer 118 inside of Lightroom Classic. 119 It sent a small smart preview to the cloud, 120 and then that cloud sent it to everybody else 121 as a smart preview, 122 which means it doesn't take up as much space. 123 So my iPad doesn't have to hold 124 the full high-resolution image. 125 My laptop doesn't have to hold the full resolution image. 126 And so everywhere I wanna be, anytime I pull up a device, 127 doesn't matter what device I'm on, 128 it has that photo from Iceland on every single computer, 129 every iPad, every iPhone, 130 and I can use that image wherever I like. 131 Now, what is the capability of a smart preview 132 versus a full high-resolution raw image? 133 They're both raw, 134 and so both of them have a lot of bit depth. 135 And I would prefer to have a small smart preview 136 over a big JPEG any day just because I prefer the bit depth 137 to the size of the photograph itself. 138 But a high-resolution raw image can, obviously, 139 be printed larger than a small smart preview. 140 But I have test printed a small smart preview, 141 and I've printed a 30-inch, 30 by 20-inch print, 142 and it looks great. 143 So you can do a lot with a very small smart preview. 144 But more importantly, generally speaking, 145 when I am on my iPad or my phone or on my laptop, 146 I'm not using that smart preview to try 147 and print a really big image. 148 I'm either trying to share it on social media, 149 I'm trying to put it on a website, 150 or I'm trying to use it to just make adjustments on an image 151 or show a slideshow to someone. 152 Those are all perfect uses for a smart preview. 153 There's no reason why you wouldn't use a smart preview 154 for that instead of the original raw. 155 The only time I need the original raw 156 is when I want to share that image out to the client, 157 or I want to print that image for the client. 158 That's it, those are the only times I ever need 159 the full high-resolution image. 160 Okay, so that's not exactly true 161 because there is one other time 162 where I need the high-resolution raw image, 163 and that's when I'm making a TIFF 164 or a PSD, so that I can retouch the image. 165 I will need it then. 166 And so retouching, printing or delivery, 167 I need access to the original raw image. 168 Any other activity, whether it is adjusting the image, 169 sharing the image on social media, 170 or putting it on my website, 171 I don't need the original raw image available to me.
