Location Challenges: How to shoot Deserts
Desert. So desert, to me, is about texture. Texture and warmth. So these shots, when you get out there in the desert and sand dunes. It doesn't even have to be in the desert. It could be on the beach. Like in sand, desert sand. Low light. The low angle of the sun is what gives you that depth and texture on the sand dunes. So as the sun gets up, what happens? It all flattens out. So when you're out in these places, and you're looking at sand dunes, desert, beach, whatever it happens to be, the low light is what's gonna make all that texture appear. So you wanna be there when the light's gonna be the lowest in the sky. Then, if you are in the desert, show off what makes it a desert, you know? I just smack my camera right down on the ground, right in front of these cracks. 'Cause that to me, that says desert. So I made that the focal point of my photo. There you go. Low light to emphasize texture and get close. That's the theme between both of those. You'd never see those ripples if I was...
back far. If I was zommed out, you wouldn't see the ripples as good as you do when it's close up.

This class was for beginners and I believe Matt did a great job of giving students an great introduction to landscape photography. More on the practical than technical side, but that seems appropriate for an intro class. He comes across as a "real" guy who loves what he does and is eager to share his knowledge. Those new to photography will get a lot of helpful information and tips in this course.
