Location Challenges: How to shoot Cloudy, Stormy, & Blah Weather

Cloudy, stormy, blah weather. I find if we can get ourselves near any type of textured patterns, scenes where we can fill the frame with something else but the weather, sometimes that flat light works. Something like these, this was in Bandon, Oregon. Pretty seemingly like simple scene. It's just, it's really decay. Like anybody thought they were creating a nice photo when they let all this go, but to me this would never look good on a sunny day. This is meant to be photographed in this flat, overcast-type light and I think it adds to the mood of the whole photo. You saw this photo earlier. Blah clouds, but when you look at the, and then dramatic clouds, sun poking through. That's something to keep looking for. If you see the cloud cover moving and changing, like last night. If I wasn't working last night, I would've gotten my camera and tried to get out to go shooting somewhere 'cause the clouds were just rolling through. I could look down, I can see the Golden Gate Bridge from my roo...

m, and I can look down and I could actually see warm light and then it got faded, and then warm again. It's probably a pretty neat light show down that way. But in that case, I'm gonna emphasize the clouds. I'm gonna show the drama. I'm gonna show the drama in camera and I'm gonna show the drama in post-processing. We're gonna talk about tomorrow and I'm gonna throw a lot of clarity and contrast onto those clouds and we'll look for breaks in the clouds.

This class was for beginners and I believe Matt did a great job of giving students an great introduction to landscape photography. More on the practical than technical side, but that seems appropriate for an intro class. He comes across as a "real" guy who loves what he does and is eager to share his knowledge. Those new to photography will get a lot of helpful information and tips in this course.
