Adding Colors
in this lesson, I want to share a few tips how to work with colors for this type of very graphic looking illustration it is probably a good idea to start from very limited color. Now most of the design elements is completed so it's time to look at the layer again and either delete the sketch layer or in this case I'm just going to hide the bottom layer so so now you can see all the designs clearly and also since the guide is not necessary anymore, I will disable the guide as well. I usually try to make it work with just one color plus white. It means I usually try to create an illustration that can make sense with only two colors such as black and white. Now for this particular example since I'd like to make digital electronic look to it so I can definitely think of the background to be very dark and since I want to go from the black and white I will make the background color black. o back and make it into background color. Now I was using the stroke color this bright stroke color only to make a contrast against the pencil lines. So using the selection menu. Now I can make that into fuel color and white and notice some of the area is right next to the other shapes. So when I tried to convert everything two White Field Color, some of the details got lost but I will fix that once we apply the colors. But the idea is you want to start from very simple color combination such as black and white by doing this you can really focus on the composition of the image first. Once competition is solid then you can increase the number of colors that you use. This type of geometric shape based illustration works well with the limited color palette. If you use too many colors you will lose the strength of simplicity of particular shapes in general. Keep it simple with colors. Now when you choose a particular color there are a few things to consider and also when you think of the color it is very important to think of the color wheel. So I have this color wheel and I can use this to figure out what kind of color combination I want to use for this particular design. Now, now first I think about color contrast. White against black background will create the most contrast but in this case I would like to use more color to the design. So I will look at the color wheel and what makes better contrast against the black background. And usually if you look at the warmer color group will create a better color contrast against black. For example, if you look at blue and yellow to compare, you can definitely see that yellow is more visible. So as a starting point 1st I select all the white area and turn that into yellow. Also when I have something like this area, these are the shapes right next to the other shapes. So it makes sense to change the color to something other than yellow. Now the color within the color, you don't want to create too much contrast, then it will become vibrate, but you want to create enough contrast so that you can see this design easily. Then I will look at the color with you again and this is the yellow that I picked and anything on the other side of the color wheel will create too much contrast. So I should look for something closer to the choice of the color. If it's too close for example, this kind of orange, it may not be the enough contrast. So I will choose red, then the red color, it's not completely opposite side of the choice of the color which is the purple, but it's far away from the choice of the color, so it will create enough contrast. Now I go back to the overall design so I almost figure out the color combination. But if I use yellow which is very contrasted color against the black to a lot of areas, then this might be too much contrast to see the overall image. So, my first approach is that change the color or the change the majority of the color to read and use yellow to create the accent of overall design. So now I select in the area To introduce the 2nd colors. Now I introduced most of the secondary color and because of that, the image started to have more depth to it. Also, as we discussed, the yellow has the most contrast against the black background, so I'm also used in the yellow to increase the focal point, increasing the sense of focal point. Now red is less contrasted, so if I really want to create a good focus on particular area, I I would like to use the yellow and also if some design element is really close to each other, then that's the area to change the color. So keep that in mind, looking at the overall balance of how much color you use. Also where to use particular color to enhance the sense of focal point is really the key to work with the colors.
