Guided Edit: Tilt Shift
So let's go back to our organizer for a moment and let's get another picture to practice with. We are gonna do a tilt shift edit. And we'll try it on a couple of photos. So maybe like the ski trip and then I think this picture which I think is already open, so we'll see. So we can select them here in our bin and then I'm gonna go to special edits and we're gonna walk through one called tilt shift. This, if you've never seen tilt shift before it creates this miniature look. So it makes it look like, depending on what you're shooting, it can make it look like you're shooting a toy model of the scene, it's kind of a funny effect. So let's click on that and we'll try it here first with this scenic photo that I have. So you'll notice when you're in guided edit you start with that screen we were just on where you pick an effect, you pick something that you want to be guided through. And then over here on the right it tells you exactly what you need to do to accomplish that. So you literally ...
just read and click. So step one, click add tilt shift to give the image a default tilt shift effect. So we'll say okay, add tilt shift. And there Photoshop renders a default effect. So what has happened is this area up here towards the top of the screen, this is blurred. This area across here is not blurred and the area here is again blurred. So it sort of creates like a false shallow depth of field that creates this weird miniature effect. So if I want to edit this I'll continue to step two where it says click the modify focus area button below and then click and drag on your image to manually specify the area of focus. So we'll click here, then I'm gonna come over on the image and I need to tell Photoshop what I want to keep in focus so let's say I want, maybe I want the effect to be moved a little bit downwards. So I'll click here and drag down like this and then I let go and it rerenders the effect. It can take some practice, the nice thing is you can redo this as many times as you need to. You kind of have to just feel it out. I think it's hard to predict where to click and where to drag just off the top of your head. But the longer of a line that you drag the more gradual the effect would be. So if you want a really extreme effect you would drag a shorter line. So maybe, so I think that looks kind of, that is good, I think. Now optional down here you can refine the effect by getting access to some sliders. So if we click on that we can scroll down further, we can adjust how blurry this blur is gonna be. I think the more extreme that we make it the more, you know, totally unreal and fake it looks. So we want to keep that pretty small. We can adjust the contrast of the image and we can adjust the overall saturation to just make the effect how we want it. So when we're happy with it we go ahead and click next and then it's gonna ask us, you know, to save it and if you wanna continue editing in quick mode or in expert mode.

Just watching this class live. It's my first class with Khara; she is a wonderful teacher, moving at a steady speed but always being careful to let us know what she's doing in the moment. I would classify myself as intermediate in terms of PSE but I've learned lots of little things that will make further use even easier and more fun. I really appreciated her descriptions of the difference between PS and PSE and her encouragement in using Photoshop Elements and all that it can do.
