WLAN & GPS Menus
This is the wireless option on the camera where you can hook a phone for remote triggering and control of the camera. There is gonna be a lot of options in here and we're not gonna spend too much time on most of them. But we are gonna do a set-up with my phone and camera to see if we can get this hooked up properly. So first up in here is a big sub-menu that we're gonna have a lot of different options. We're gonna kinda poke around and look at this and then we'll do a little demo. So first up, you can turn this function on and off. Most of the time, you're gonna leave it turned off 'cuz you're not shooting with the camera most of the time. It does use quite a bit more battery power so expect shorter battery life when you are using that wireless option. We'll turn this on in a moment. So when you are connecting, you can either create a wireless network in the camera that your phone is gonna recognize and connect up with. And this is what we're gonna do most of the time when we want to d...
o remote photography. But we'll also have the option of doing a join option in here. In the setup is gonna be another sub-menu. And you're gonna be able to dive in and make some setting changes that most people are not going to need to change. The name of the camera which appears on the other device, the Wi-Fi system that you're looking for. You can enter your password in there if you're hooking up and joining another LAN system. And so the other option here is joining a wireless system that is already in existence with some other device. You can have your camera connect up with it. We're not gonna be doing that. People do that a little less frequently. But in here, if you do wanna do it, you'll need to scan for that device. You'll need to add that network to your system and connect with it. You may need to enter the name of it so that you can connect with it. Once again, this is something that very few people do. You can choose which type of security system you are using. And then entering a password so that you can become a part of that system and use that wireless network system. And then this will be another configuration mode for connecting up with that host. And then you can choose the IP mode which will vary depending on what type of computer system you're using. You also have an address mode that you can get into. These are some of the least used items on this camera. Don't worry folks. Then we also have mask that we can add in here. So what we're gonna do and then you can choose which system. You can have multiple systems that your camera hooks up to if you go from one system to the next. So what we're gonna do is we're gonna go back up and do a setting ourselves. Now I'm gonna give you kind of a quick little visual diagram of what we need to do here is if you wanna do a Wi-Fi remote control, you're gonna need your phone and you're gonna need your camera. And you're gonna need to do a number of tasks with both your phone and your camera. First thing is you need to download the Leica M app so that you can have the app on your phone. The next thing you're gonna need to do is on your camera, turn on the WLAN and you're gonna need to create a LAN wireless system in your camera, which we will do here in just a moment. The next step is gonna be on your phone, make sure the Wi-Fi is turned on. You need to select the Wi-Fi signal coming from the Leica M camera. Enter the password. And then you're gonna open the M app and then you're gonna tap to search for the Leica M and then tap to connect the M. And then you can open up the app and start selecting the functions that you work with here. So now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna try the most dangerous part about this instruction and hook this camera up to my phone here. And so what I'm gonna do first is I'm gonna go into my phone and turn on my Wi-Fi so I can actually use this here. But let me go into the camera. And make sure my camera turns on here. Okay, let's get to the correct page. And we're gonna go in here. And we are going to turn this function on. Now this is the longest part of the process. It needs to create a wireless little system, sending out a Wi-Fi signal. And this usually takes about 15 seconds. So be patient here folks. And when those arrows stop turning, then we're good. So we're kinda getting pretty good here. So now it's just kinda doing its final step here. And we should be able to see a wireless system here in a moment on my phone. And so let me pop open my phone here. And as you can see on my phone, we have a Leica M option right down here. So I'm gonna select that. And we're gonna see if it can connect up with this. And so it does have that connection now. So what I'm gonna do is I am going to open up, I'll get this so you don't have too many reflection on here, I'm gonna open up my Wi-Fi settings. And I am going to open up my Leica M app right down here. And I am needing to tap to search for the camera. And then I am going to need to tap again. Did it get it? It might have got stuck there folks. Uh-oh. I think it got stuck. I'm going to reset by just killing that app and opening it again. And it's stuck there again. Oh wait, let's try it again. Searching for the camera. Alright, we got it that time. Now we're gonna try to connect to the camera. I don't know why they do this in a two step process, but they do. So now we have our options on the top of the camera. We can dive into the menu. And we can make all sorts of setting changes in here. You know, you wanna go in and change the sharpness. We can change it to low or high setting. And now it's on high setting. We can go into playback and we can playback images and look at the different images that I've been shooting here in class. And probably most interesting is we can activate the camera. Now you probably heard the shutter open and you can see the signal on the back of the camera. And so now I can go get in the camera myself and trigger the camera using these various controls. Now you can also turn this sideways and have various controls in here. Let's make sure that we don't get too many reflections. You can fire the shutter. You can do gray card. You can do exposure adjustments in here. You can view this, what it's gonna look like with the aperture changed. And since I have it set wide open, that's not gonna make a difference. We can zoom in. It can be tough to adjust focus from a distance, but if we want to adjust focus, we can do so. Let's move that focus point a little bit off to the left so we have something to focus on. So we can adjust our focus here. And then we can zoom back. And then if I wanna get in the photo myself, I can walk away over here and I can figure out whether I wanna be on one side. Take a picture here. I can come over here onto the other side, making sure that I'm still in the frame and it's still reading this here. I'm barely in the frame. And get yourself a remote shot. Now obviously you can do this without you in the photo. But this is a great way to put the camera in a more interesting location, see exactly what's going on with the camera, and shoot photos here. And so there's a lot of different interesting applications for this and I encourage you to play around with this. And I am sure that in the future Leica's gonna be changing and making firmware changes to the camera and to the software that is used here. And so that might be different in the future, but the concept applies here. And so I'm gonna hit home, turn that off. And then I'm just gonna close the app on my phone. And it's closed, turned off, and not using much battery power. And so that's kinda the basics on how to get in there and set up the Wi-Fi function on the camera. Next up, GPS option. And this is only gonna be applicable when you are using the Visoflex electronic viewfinder on the camera. So it does require a little bit of time to get that signal. It'll tell you on the displays in there whether it's got the signal or not. And then it will show you in various programs where you were when you were shooting certain photos. And so this is something that is kinda nice to have and once you start using this, it becomes kind of addicting knowing exactly where you were when you shot certain photos.

I am migrating from the Leica Q to the Leica M10. Though I know my way around a Leica digital camera, the Leica M10 is my first rangefinder. I wanted someone to quickly walk me through the front/back/top/bottom of the M10. John Greengo was the perfect guide. This class is "as advertised - a "fast start" for those who prefer not to page through a fairly dense owner's manual. I especially appreciated that the lessons were broken into small chunks - so I could skip the lesson on the wifi setup, for example. And kudos to the person who prepares the amazing slide decks. While there are two dozen free Youtube videos that review the M10, they do not convey the helpful information you get in this excellent class.

John does a great job of going through every aspect of using the M10. There's not a dial, stitch button or menu item that isn't comprehensively covered. He uses simple, but effective graphics to explain what's happening. He also touches on the fundamentals of photography and throws in some tips and secrets. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than John. I'm a Leica Q owner, that's just about to upgrade to an M10 so this course has been very useful indeed.

John is an excellent teacher. I am so amazed how thoroghly he goes through everything in the menu, about the various lenses, how best to use them and so much more. I am keeping my fingers crossed John gives a class on the Leica SL2-S as there is not much out there at all about the camera and is very much needed. I would be the first to buy the class.
