Myers Briggs: Judging and Perceiving
Moving on to judging and perceiving. So, this is about how you execute. The judging person is somebody who lays out things in equal steps to go to a certain end result and the perceiving person, no matter what they do, it will always be a mad dash to the end. No matter how much they plan, no matter how much time and energy they put in it, it's always gonna be right on the deadline. No matter how much time I put into preparing for today's event, believe me, it's not that I was finished a month ago, but you know, both get it done, it's just a different way of doing things. And people who are Ps drive the Js nuts because the J goes like, come on, you knew it, you had all the time, we even sat down, we even made the plan, we put the production schedule in place. How are you not meeting? Don't worry about it, don't worry about it, I got it, I got it, I got it. So, how you approach life as a judging is it's all about schedules, they organize their lives, they like lists and plans, they're sy...
stematic, they are methodical, and they like to have things decided. They do not like last-minute stress, actually they abhor last-minute stress because in their eyes that's completely avoidable. The perceiving person is spontaneous, sometimes they like to keep their options open to the very last end because new information could be available at the very last minute that's critical to be included. They're flexible. They're casual. They're open-ended. They like things loose and open to change because things always change so they like to change with it. And they feel energized by last-minute pressure. Now let's go back to the workbook and on page number 10, here I have, again and I'm going to just show this to you, so this is the page, that we're talking about right now, where I would like you to fill in some of the things that the type that is not yours needs. And of course you can fill in as you're now learning about yourself what you yourself need and because that's really part of now being able to communicate how you're going out. So, if you are a judging and you can't stand the last-minute stress then part of your conversation with people that are always in the last-minute might be now going around this, it really stresses me out when we have this mad dash to the end. What I'm asking you to do is sit down with me now and make a plan, I know that there's gonna be some last-minute stress for you but here are the things that need to be in place for me to have this done. I'm seeing you look at this and you just had a whole thing that came to you. Yes? Go ahead. There's two things. So, one is I have a really hard time with this test because aside from the introvert part, so I'm definitely an introvert but I've learned to perform as an extrovert for my job and for life because we need it, but aside from that I'm both on every other category and I tested a long time ago as a whole brain favoring the right, so depending on whatever's going on, I act as both things, so it's really difficult for me to do any of this stuff because I function both ways and making decisions I function both ways and sometimes that's really tough, but the whole last-minute stress thing, I'm just laughing because it drives me nuts when my son does it to me and I do it to myself all the time and I do it to other people, but it drives me crazy when he does it to me, so it's just one of those life things. I really appreciate that you said that and here's why. Okay? So, number one, I don't want you to feel bad at all, because what you have said is really something I think a lot of people experience. So, you had to become something because you're in a situation at work where you feel everybody expects you to be a certain way, so you adapt to that and you step out of what's natural for you and there is confusion, there can be actually dissatisfaction, there can be anger, I believe that employee engagement has a lot to with if your boss can not see who you are 100% then why would you give everything you are if you have to be something that you're really not naturally are. So, the Myers Briggs, first of all it's not a test, it's an assessment. We have both, I have introversion as much as I have extroversion, I just have more extroversion. It just means that that's where I'm getting my energy from. And for those in the life audience and those out there who are watching, I did put a link in the workbook where you can go and take the full assessment. I think it takes about 20-25 minutes through the official provider of the Myers Briggs program to really find out. But yes, you function in both, it's just that one is generally more comfortable than the other one is for you. So, if you say it drives me crazy but I do it, it's a high probability that you're a P and with the thinking and the feeling, it doesn't mean that somebody who is thinking like me doesn't pay attention to the people. To the contrary, I had to learn to pay attention to the people. So, does this change my natural preference? It doesn't change my natural preference because I'm still constantly thinking about it but I have to stop myself and say, but what about the people, because I've learned that. Or on the opposing side, people that are always thinking about the people, if they work with people that say, yeah but come on, you need to come up with a plan here, it forces them to learn or adapt to that part of the requirement. In Myers Briggs every job, even the jobs that we consider more empathetic jobs like let's say nurses, every type is in every job, so it doesn't mean that one is better or the other, this is really about you just thinking about how do I function and how do other people function. And sometimes it takes a little bit of time and sometimes people come up in the assessment as a certain type but it doesn't feel right, so there's a lot of information on this, so I would give it your best guess and then look up some information on the internet about that type, or if you're not sure about two letters, look up the type for both letters and then determine what sounds most true to you. You are the boss of your type, not me. So, you will eventually arrive at something that's comfortable for you. Good? But yes, it does sometimes take time. Then on page 11, I would like you to take a stab at it and do this evaluate, give it your best guess as we just talked about what is your type. Are you an extrovert or an introvert? Are you a sensing or an intuition? Are you a thinker or a feeler and are you judging or perceiving? And then let's put in the self-estimated type. So, Kenna, what's the life audience telling us out there? Well, Beate, we have a lot of people who are sort of struggling to figure out the same situation where they think they have essence of each of those things within what they do. So, for example, Jennifer says I'm an introvert but I had to adapt to working more like an extrovert. I'm in that same kind of situation where adapting to your situation isn't a bad thing but we all have preferences we tend to retreat to, that was Sam. Christy is now identifying herself as an INTJ. And we have, let's see what else. I mean, I think it's really interesting for me is this question between extrovert and introvert, so I know that I am the NFP, I've been calling myself an introvert because of, even though I can be outgoing, but because of the way that I rejuvenate, so I guess, is it where you get your energy from or where you re-up sort of idea? Well, it really is where you get your energy from. So, there are people that get their energy from going home, like a classic introvert might go home from work and they may not wanna talk for 15-20 minutes or half hour. They may have to sit down, they may have to have he cup of tea, read the paper, read a book, listen to music, go in the bathroom, take a shower, take a bath, but they have to shut off before they can initiate so the next thing. So, Kenna, that would be a classic sign of an introvert. Doesn't mean that extroverts don't like baths. (laughter) Don't need to decompress, but the extrovert most likely went home and said, oh, that was an incredible day, I crushed it. And sort of have that sense of like, wow, wow, I gotta come off that, that was really good, whereas the introvert really seeks the solitude for the rejuvenation. And I think that's the word you were using, where do you rejuvenate yourself? It doesn't mean that, let's say, when I train or teach for a full day and I talk all day long, yeah, it's great and I feel totally energized and I love it, but when I go, I'm gonna have to not talk for like an hour because I just talked all day. But I'm a classic extrovert, so don't be upset with yourself if you can't quite get it. Again, there is the link in the workbook where you can go and do the assessment and if there's two letters, again, just write it down with both letters and then do an internet search for a type description for that particular type and that type and then read up on it and then do your type based upon what sounds most true to you. But the idea, and I think that's what I really like about what's coming up right now with our life audience and our audience all over, our streaming audience, is that they're recognizing, wait a minute, what I'm acting as might not be who I truly am and that is a really powerful breakthrough already that we're seeing because it means that you've become something that you may not innately be in order to function. And that means that whatever your skill set or your super skill set is is slumbering underneath because we are talking about super skill is hiding behind what you think the rest of the world wants you to be. So, what if we can cut through these layers and actually get to that essence and have you being able to articulate that the way you truly are, introvert, extrovert, sensing, feeling, whatever that might be, that that's actually the way you need to be. That there's no having to be a certain way because the boss gets it. The boss will get it when you're able to tell the boss why and that's what we're going to be talking about some more.
