Wi-Fi & Playback

There is a shortcut to the wifi function. Now, we're officially gonna get into wifi in the final section of this class, but this is a shortcut. Once you have gone through the setup process of your camera, you can quickly enter into the wifi mode. So this is basically a shortcut to the wifi functions in the menu system. And we're gonna show you how you can set this camera up as a remote camera and use your phone as a remote viewing device so you can see on your phone what the camera's pointed at, which is a great way of doing great group shots or perhaps getting the camera mounted by a bird feeder or something that you don't physically want to be close by. And, as far as downloading images from your camera to your phone so that you can send those off to various websites or email or for whatever purpose you want, it's quite easy to do with this camera. We'll get fully into that when we get into the menu section on the camera. Next up, we have the blue play back. So notice, it is in blue.

And there are other buttons that are also in blue. And so that is gonna deal with play back. So let's talk in depth about the play back mode on the camera. So you can use the dial on the back of the camera or the buttons to go forward and back through your images. You can zoom in and check sharpness on your images by zooming in and zooming out with the little blue buttons in the upper corner. You will, of course, have the garbage can, if you want to get rid of your images. And if you have a lot of images that you quickly wanna go through, the top dial will jump 10 images forward or back through your collection of images. And, of course, you have a touch screen. And so you can use the various controls on the touch screen for zooming in, flicking from one image to the next, pinching and zooming and so forth. And so feel free to use whatever system you want. It's really strange, there are some people who are huge touch screen fans. And then there are other people like myself that are not touch screen fans. And I've been trying to articulate why, why do I not like the touch screen? And it's because, when you touch the screen, you can't see what's underneath your finger. And I wanna see what's on the screen. Also, when you touch the screen, you leave fingerprints on the screen, which always bug me. And I wanna have the best visual display possible. So that's why I don't like the touch screen. But, for all of you who do like the touch screen, I'm not mad at you. I don't hate you for liking the touch screen. Different people like different things and I'm just glad we have both options on this camera. Remember, you can hit the info button. And that's gonna show you your shutter speed, aperture information, or your histogram information. This is really great for learning photography. You take a photo, you're like, wow, this came out really good. What did I do right? Well, this is gonna allow you to see some of that technical information, where the camera was set and what you did with the settings on the camera. So that's very helpful in revealing that information. When you're in the play back mode, you can hit the quick menu and you can get access to other features that are exclusive to being in the play back mode. Now, we'll talk more about these as we get into the play back menu. But there are all sorts of things that you can do here as far as adjusting your images. And I sometimes will refer to this as Photoshop Light in the camera. You can resize your images, you can crop them if you want. And so there's some handy things in here and we'll talk more about it as we go through the class. But always remember that that quick menu is gonna get you access to a good shortcut of information. When you play movies, you can hit the set button and that's gonna bring up these controls along the bottom of the camera so that you can control various parts about watching it, whether you wanna go back to the first frame or you wanna freeze the frame. And we also have another option coming up here at the very end. Oh, background music, trust me, that is not worth it. You can also edit a movie here. And so what I wanna do right now is I wanna do a little demo for you. And I'm gonna shoot a short movie. This is a very short movie. And I wanna show you how to edit the movie. So I need to put the camera in the movie mode. And so what I'm gonna do is what happens a lot of times when you're shooting movies is I am gonna start recording and I'm gonna record for just like five seconds, just 'cause I wanna keep this really short. But I'm gonna wanna clip the beginning and the end of this movie off. Because what happens a lot of times, and I'm gonna loosen up my tripod here, so that I'm a little on the unsteady side. And what I'm gonna do is, I'm gonna press down the start button. And then I'm gonna try to hold it in steady. And then I'm gonna press the stop button at the end. So that was my short little movie. So I'm gonna press play back. And you can see it's got the arrow in here, so that means it's a movie. So I'm gonna hit set. And let's just watch this movie for a moment. Enjoy my cinematography here. Okay, so you saw there was a bit of a jiggle at the beginning of this whole frame. So what I wanna do is I wanna edit out the beginning of this video. So I'm gonna come over here to edit. And I'm gonna hit set and enter this. Now I can cut the beginning, I can cut the end, I can play what I have left, and then I can save it. So what I wanna do is I wanna cut the beginning of the movie. So I'm gonna press set. And you'll see, up at the top I have a control. And now as I turn the dial, it's gonna go frame by frame through the beginning of this clip. And you can see that I was really moving it around. And somewhere in here I kinda settled in. And I'm gonna find out where I settled in at. So it's not changing too much right in here. So I'm gonna go back. And it was the first few seconds that were really bad. I'm gonna cut out this entire section right here. And so now I'm gonna hit set, okay. Look for those controls on screen. So I'm gonna hit set. And I am gonna save this right here. Now I could overwrite and get rid of the old one, but I'm gonna save the new file as a new file. Okay, so it's saving a whole new file. Now I have two video files. Let's go back. Here is the first one. And I gotta press play. Big old jiggle and then it's nice and steady. And let's go to the next video. Let's play this one. And hit play. And I guess I maybe could've cut it a little bit further in. But in any case, you can go in and you can clip your videos front and back and kinda get those little jiggles out of there and just improve your videos a little bit. So I think that's a helpful bit of advice there. All right, next up on the back of the camera, the control wheel are also buttons. And so each of the buttons controls something different. And in many of these cases, we've already talked about what they've done. But the top one controls, it's a direct access to your white balance. Now, we did talk about this in the previous section on the quick menu. So we're not gonna go in and do the whole white balance talk again. But if you wanna have direct control, you can do it here or you can do it through the quick menu. Another feature that we talked about in the quick menu is the AF operation. So we're gonna have one shot for subjects that are stationary and not moving around too much. AI servo is for your action and your sports photography. I don't recommend AI focus, because that's where the camera chooses for you and it's a little unpredictable what it's going to choose and what it is choosing at any given time. And so I would prefer to stay away from that middle one. Over on the left side, we have our drive mode, which controls what happens when we press down on the shutter release. I usually leave my camera in single shot. Move it into the high speed or the low speed continuous when I'm shooting sports. And then we have the self timer options, which can be really handy when you're on a tripod or trying to do a group shot, for instance. The bottom of this is the picture control dial. If you wanna change the look of your JPEG images, this will allow you to quickly change in and change these looks. For the most part, I personally don't change picture styles very often, with the exception of going to black and white. I do love being able to see an in-the-field view of what the black and white photograph is going to look like. But if you do want to adjust your images, the contrast, the saturation, you can do that directly with the picture styles button. We have a lock on the back of the camera. And this will lock the functions of the back dial, the touch screen, as well as the top dial on the camera. Now, you can go into setup, menu number four, multi-function lock, and control what actually does lock when you engage the lock. For instance, if you still want the touch screen active, you could not check that box. You could still activate the touch screen, but the dials would be locked. Or maybe you just want to lock the touch screen. 'Cause maybe you hold the camera in a way that the nose, your nose touches the screen when you're holding the camera and you don't like that. And so you could simply just flick the lock and lock the touch screen. And so it's very customizable, very handy way of controlling those features so they aren't changing when you don't want them to change. Little access lamp. This means that your camera is working and writing information to the memory card. You don't wanna be taking the memory card out of the camera if it is turned on.
