Combining Interaction and Animation
What we're gonna look at in this segment is kinda developing some of the techniques we've used already and adding a little bit more onto those. So we've done sort of the early steps of creating our interaction, now we're going to do a little bit more. So, at the end of the previous segment, we added this button here to trigger the playing of the movie. Now I just wanna do a couple of things here because this actually isn't fitting to the frame here at the moment. So I'm just gonna right click on this just to get my ducks in a row here. So I'm gonna go to my fitting options there, okay, and I'm just gonna do fit content proportionately. So we'll see a slightly different view of the movie when it comes up next and in fact, you can see that the hatched lines that we've got just there that are representing the movie at the moment in our layout view here, they've all gone suddenly a bit narrower. They're actually at the right aspect ratio for the movie. So we're gonna mix up these things an...
d combine things together. So this button here that comes on, I think this would kind of be nice if that faded in on page load so that the user gets an idea, that, hey there's something to click. Because otherwise, they might just miss it. They might go, I didn't know there was anything there. But this way they'll actually see it. So, what I'm going to do is come up to the animation panel because we think about animation as being moving from one place to another, but of course, animation is anything in the temporal realm. It's anything that involves time. So, what I'm going to do is pick up that element like so, okay, and I'm going to choose a preset from here and what I'm gonna do is choose fade in. So that will fade in. The InDesign butterfly again confirming that there's no ambiguity about what fade in means. Every time I mouse over that it will fade in just so that I know. So it's gonna do that on page load. It's gonna take one second to do that and it's gonna play just one time there. So let's go for the EPUB interactivity preview here and I'll play the spread. So remember, it's gonna happen fairly quickly because the spread will just jump on and then that element will appear. There you go, can you see that? Nice little fade over the top there. I've also got a controller here which we'll deal with a bit later on. But now I can just click on that. Arrgh I be Gold Beard, I be stuck here... And it starts playing. On this island, I used to... And we need to try and stop it. Just reaching the panel just there. So I'll close that out by stopping that. It would be a good idea for me to actually add a separate control for that to stop just at the moment. So let's just build one of those and we'll get that to animate in after this one. Okay, so I'll just build that next to this one. I'm gonna zoom in just here for the moment. I'm gonna tap L to get my ellipse tool here and then just drag outwards holding down shift and go for a similar size. If I drag onto the layout, the smart guides there will actually help me, okay and once I've got that. They don't do it on the pace board of course, I can do Shift + X here to swap the foreground color out. I'm gonna tap M to get my rectangle shape tool. Positioning in the middle of this shape. I'm having to do it a bit by eye because I've not lined them up. Alt or Option and Shift. So, drawing a constrained shape from the center, like so. Just draw a rectangle like that, perfect. Tapping V to get my selection tool. Picking up both of those things. Pathfinder, which I've still got present here. Of course, it's in the Window menu if you don't have it otherwise and I'm going to choose subtract. So now that shape is out and as I did in the previous segment, I'm going to use my object style to change that with quick apply. So, Command + Return, Control + Return on a PC. It's already highlighted just here. If not, I'll just tap G, L, until it does highlight and then hit return. Job done. Okay, so now I've got that semi transparent thing over there, I'm gonna zoom out a little bit. Okay, like so. And I think, whoops, not quite that far, okay, and I'll put that, let's put that over on the right hand side just here. So that comes in there. Let's apply an action to it. So buttons panel like so. Add an action. This is gonna be another video action just here, okay and then I'm gonna choose with again the same movie, linking it up to that. I'm going to choose stop just there. So that will stop that content. Whoops, I'm not going to test that just at the moment. What I am going to do is animate that. I'm going to choose that to fade in also and of course, if I wanted to, I could determine where it's going to be targeted from and indeed, in the timings panel, change that too if I wanted to. That's just fine. Okay, so let's test that layout very very quickly. So, let's just hit the play button just there so the button fades in like so. They're both faded in, so I can start that playing. Arrgh I be Gold Beard, I be stuck here... And I can click that to stop it, yey relief. And that's always a good thing to do with your user. Always give them a way to stop an action like that. I'm not, you can trigger things to play automatically. I'm not hugely a fan of that. I think it's bit intrusive and rude. That's my own personal opinion there. Unless it's a link to something. In which case you'd expect it to play when you get there, but just nothing automatically. Okay, so we're going to examine the layout as we are so far. I'm actually going to just park these two buttons off the layout for the minute. 'Cause I may or may not use those as controllers. So, what we've got here is, we've got quite a lot of stuff. We've got a nice background, which adds to our content I think here. We've got a lot of stuff going on here on the left, sorry, the right hand side there. So maybe it might be an idea if we sort of hid that until we actually needed it. That would probably be a good thing to do just there. So, let's see what else we could do. The movie, that's fine. We might need to change that out a little bit. We got the multi state objects and everything on here and what you're actually looking for now are things that distract the user from the actual layout itself. So things like, ooh squirrel. That kind, ooh there's a squirrel over there. So you're trying to focus the user's attention on that actual content. I kind of think those elements on the right hand side there really are distracting. So I'm actually going to work on those and move those away until we need them. So to do that, of course, we'll need to build ourselves a nested menu. Now this is where the fun really starts because this is a slightly more advanced operation.
