Gear Setup - Setting Up a Light Stand or “Stick”
Our first gear set up in this video we want to show you how to set up a pocket strobe light stand or what we affectionately refer to as the stick oftentimes on shoots I'll tell my assistant hey I need two sticks set up and this is the exact sort of they were going to talk about how we're going to do to set up we're going to one manual stick set up and one full feature sticks that up just you can see the differences and see how much more simple one is then the other already let's go ahead and get started that was a very high pitched sound that I just made there with my mouth so we're gonna grab our standard umbrella brackett we're gonna pop it right onto our my man proto did I say man me and proto man photo nano stand and we're ready to put our flash on here okay so just make sure that everything is tight as you guys go I'm going to grab the loom a pro lp one eighty this guy is indeed my favorite manual strobe so if you're looking for a great manual scroll that combined new look no furt...
her than this guy comes with like a really funny box too has funny wording on it okay, I'm gonna put this on here and tighten this up and I'm gonna go ahead and lock it in places well again at this point a few hour if you are not our if you are a lighting assistant or a photographer, make sure that everything is secure because what happens is my assistant. I go. Okay, great. Put that light over here, and then they go great pie, and they lift it up, and then the head falls off and generally were shooting by the beach, of course, and it falls in the water, and then I go ga you must tighten the screws before you start moving things around, so just give it a little safety check at this point. Make sure everything's good. Now what we're gonna do is grab our schmuck it wizard. Okay, this is our pa glaser plus three. It has a hilda zine bracket on the back it's like a fifteen, twenty dollar bracket. Guys can pick up on amazon that gives it this little mount and you can now place it around, eh, rod? Now, here's what I'm to say I'll show you how to do it the wrong way first. So we're going to do is attach it right here and what I would say and the reason why there's generally not that many wrong ways to do something, but we'd always say, attach it to the uppermost rod when you our when you're putting this on, I'll show you why I'm gonna go ahead and grab this little sync cable I'm gonna pop this into our three point five millimeters sink port here and I love the fact that the lumen pro has a three point five millimeters sink port it doesn't you know it has pieces seem to but any time I can avoid using pc think I do hate p c synch okay we're going to pop that right in there now this is the problem we're all set up and everything and if I tell my assistant raise the light stand up now this is the first issue that you come across when you start raising it up this is attached below on a rock below it so doesn't move with it so you start lengthening the cable and at a certain point obviously you can't raise any of that until you fix it so what we always say that when you're attaching the pocket wizard raise the uppermost rod just a little bit and attach the punk was there to that rod that way everything moves in concert with each other see how it almost together how wonderful is that? Okay let's go ahead and turn this little guys you guys can see what's going on here so now we're gonna do is I'm gonna go ahead and just aim this right into you guys like I'm blind you all I'm going to turn on our flash I'm gonna turn on the pocket wizard and then I'm gonna go ahead and grab my pocket over here. This is a camera, not a park wizard surprised you didn't know that. Okay, got my pop was a plus three on my hot shoe. I'm gonna power this guy on, make sure my cameras on and of course, the thing that we all do before we text test and look at anything and we just hit the flash button and we're like, hey, wait it's not working well, come on. When you started up, just give it a quick look see here we're on transmit and receive for our radio mode. We're on channel one here we're on channel one and I go why is it not working? Because the mode is set transmit on lee so this is on ly transmitting this is transmitting receiving so when it sends out a signal this says hey, I'm not receiving anything I'm only sending signals out so we got to set this to either transmit and receive or to receive only either way I'm gonna set it to receive only I don't need to send another signal out his need to receive now when the fire hey, it works just fine okay, so we have properly set up our light stand so this is our stick lie stand with a manual strobe on it now, of course, when you're using pock wizards this is on ly sending a signal to just simply fire the flash so any time we need to adjust zoom or power settings that needs to be done manually from the strobe itself which means that you or your lighting assistant will need to go and do that that could get a little bit cumbersome so let's go ahead and show you one additional set up logan lights stand me gonna grab an extra little bracket right here. Thank you, sir. Okay. We're gonna pop this guy right here onto our late stand. I'm gonna tighten him up. I'm gonna adjust this angle of the bracket a little bit still have a bunch of these old cheap brackets that I'm waiting for them all to break I have a lot of nice new westcott ones I want to put into use but I gotta break all my old stuff first that's how I kind of work I still have, like, fifteen freaking big guitars that I got a break oh, and I purchased like the extended warranties on them to let to break every one of them twice. Okay, so we have those in place now and I'm gonna grab my phone takes metro's plus this is again a full feature flash with a radio built in I'm gonna go ahead and power that's on you could always put it on the stand and power down to you okay and I'm gonna go ahead and just aim this let's just aim this at you guys all right I'll place it onto my cold shoe okay and I'm gonna tighten it in place it's locked in place now and guess what that was the entire set up for the full feature stroke it's ready to go now no cables no parkway there's no nothing all had to do is just mount the flash so now on this side I'm going to go ahead to switch this out because radios are not compatible with one another pocket sir will not control of faux takes metros so I'm gonna grab the photo odin this is the transmitter for the metro's plus system I could also use another metro's plus if I wanted to and now with this on my camera I just need to make sure this is currently set to channel one and group c and I do indeed have channel one in groups he said over here so when I start popping it starts firing so the whole point of this is to show you how simple this set up is in relation to this setup on this set up if I want to make an adjustment to the power I'm going to take it up to its currently on one sixteenth power I'm going to take it up to full power okay, I've done that now just directly from my remote and now it's firing at full power. Where is on this guy? Any adjustment that I make, I have to go and walk over to the flash and do that now that might not be a big deal when the flash is close to you and when you work in the studio and so forth. But when you have this placed inside of a soft box, it's much, much more convenient to control everything from the back of your odin or for the back of the another metros rather than having to have an assistant reach into the soft box, make adjustments and go, you know, from there. So we're talking about two flashes that really do the exact same thing, but we're talking about more convenience on one side and that's generally, just as a rule of thumb paying more for something buying better gear, buying more professional care doesn't necessarily make your images that much better what it does, it makes your life that much easier. Okay, so it makes doing the same thing a lot easier, so just keep that in mind. So here we have our two standard stick setups hope you all enjoy this video let's, go ahead and move to the next gear set up.

Pye is a god. His teaching style is really engaging, breaking down everything you could want to know about each example in a fun yet detailed manner. The course is absolutely jam-packed full of great information and fantastic inspiration. This course, as well as Lighting 101, give not only a perfect foundation for anybody learning about flash from scratch, but also have more than enough tips and advanced techniques in them to help experienced flash users seriously up their game. Cannot recommend it enough.
