Class Introduction
I am Ray, I've been a professional podcast producer for the last 10 years. Which is awesome to say, because it's barely a real job title, it was made up when I started. So, they're paying people to do podcast production, that at some point, could be all of you. 'Cause when you become a podcaster then people say, "How do I do that?" And you're like, "I'll do it for you, "pay me some money." (laughter) I do have my own shows and they're all about podcasting, so we can take this, and then you can go listen for hours and hours and hours. But it's not hard, we just dive in deep. So the key for today, while we're here, is to... We want to figure out what we need to do to get the best quality audio, out of all the gear. Whatever gear we've chosen, we want to get the best quality out of that. And that is because if you record audio well, if you record it clean, I like to say there's no noise or issues going into the audio, then we can do whatever we want. We can make that audio sound as good a...
s, dare I say it, NPR production or some other professional production that your podcast is gonna be right up alongside in Apple Podcast, or Stitch, or wherever you listen to. So yours can sound as good, doesn't have to be expensive, just if we learn some techniques, we can compensate for the fact that we're not in a million dollar studio, alright? So if you don't record it well, people who follow me probably get sick of hearing me say the same thing, but I like to say you can't make bad audio good, you can only make it less bad, right? So we don't want to start from behind, and we're in our editing, and we're trying to do noise removal, and all these things to make up for it, and we never quite get where we want. In fact, a lot of times people ruin it 'cause they try to fix too much. So if we just get it clean in the beginning, we're set. We can do all the things we wanna do. So this is a quote, this is from Randy Coppinger, he was sixteen years working at Disney Character Voices, so he's recorded everyone under the sun. And he was on my show, The Podcasters Studio, Episode 88. We talked for like two hours. By the way, I was in my car when I talked to him, so sometimes that can be an impromptu studio if you need it. It worked out great, sounds wonderful. And he said, "the secret to a great-sounding "dialog or vocal mix is a good recording: "plosive free, without mouth noise, "sans funky contributions from the room, "and lacking sibilance." So for me today, this is sort of a recipe for us to follow for getting good audio. And this will sort of take us through the class today, we'll address all of these things and some more. And because I think your recording environment is pretty much paramount, I think it's the one thing that's gonna determine most how your audio sounds, microphone is almost equally important, but we're gonna start there.

Great detailed information and technical best practices for the new podcaster. Ray is a great teacher. He explains complicated technical stuff in an easy to follow way. I got a lot of value from this class. I am sure that it will allow me to avoid and headaches and some time consuming mistakes in the future. Thanks Ray!

Ray had a lot of information to cover in a short amount of time and he was generous with his hard-earned insights, well-organized and offered detailed information on hardware. He did a great job talking about the must-haves as well as the great-to-have-when-you're-ready items.
