Image Impact
If we talk a little bit about impact. This particular image has impact because it's not something that you would look at everyday. You wouldn't come across a fella like that. This is a single capture image. It took us a day to hang all of those knives by fishing line. It's in a single capture category. When you enter a print competition there are multiple categories under portrait, under illustrative, under wedding, all of those different categories. Inside those categories they will each have rules of what you can and can't enter. Under the portrait category which is what I love to enter, they've gotta be single capture so you submit the raw file. When you challenge a judge with an image like this, with this level of impact, they're gonna get up out of their chair. They're gonna go up and they're gonna look at it. he detail, the expression, the mood, you start to see scars, you start to see so many other elements. So, when a judge judges that, they're challenged. It doesn't have to be a beautiful photograph, it's just gotta have impact to challenge someone and tell a story. And you know what? That's the type of image that you could come up with your own story. So that impact is extremely is important, it has to make people wanna get up out of their chair. I was at a competition in Australia. One of the judges, my image had scored a at a previous competition, at a state level. And, I entered it at a national level. One of the judges didn't even get out of his seat. In the background of the photograph, and it's gonna come up later in my slideshow, there's words, very, very subtle words. And it was a letter written by the baby's father. He didn't get up out of his chair because what he saw from back there was a baby and a prop. And so, afterwards I said to him, that was my image, you didn't get out of your chair. 'Cause when you enter no one knows that's your photograph. And he said yeah, he said, it didn't make me get out of my chair. I said but you missed one of the elements. And he said, well perhaps it should have had a little bit more impact to make me get out of that chair. So that image scored a very different score there than what it originally did when judges got up. Every judging panel is different and that's what we gotta remember. Wherever you are entering a competition, even though you've got experienced trained judges, depending on who's on your panel you could receive a completely different score to a previous panel. I have a friend of mine who entered a competition in the United States, entered in Australia, received a gold award in the United States and received a 70 in Australia, for that same image, same print. It just depends on, it can be luck (laughs). A lot of it can be luck. It just depends on all of the different elements we're gonna talk about, including impact, that makes the judges get up out of their chair and go yeah, I'm gonna challenge this, I'm gonna talk this up, I really wanna talk about this image. When you start to get judges talking, that's when you know you've challenged them and you've created that impact.
