Advanced Techniques: Clip Launching

We're going to start talking about some clip launching, which is, uh, some of the most fun and interesting ah, functionality that mableton offers on dh. So, um, there are some different launch modes, and these are trigger gate toggle and repeat llegado is another as another function that you can access and clip mode that will take a look at you first, we're going to look at the launch modes, trigger gate, toggle and repeat, so right now, um, we'll start off with a well, actually, we're going to create a gate, so if you go down here, it'll launch mode and you change the toggle you can, you can actually selecting gate, and what gate does is it park? It holds down access is so as you'll notice that I have a momentary sound now, I mean, it might play out a little bit, and when I release it goes away and that's the functionality of the gate, a toggle would be triggered and then you, khun it's on off the default clip mode would be trigger and trigger basically plays until the the end of the ...

play head um, you can hit, stop, you know, in the lane, or you can stop all clips, but there's, no, stop. Button well the cool thing is with toggle mode you can access to stop on right there in the clip where you just triggered it or you can just have it so that it releases a soon as you're done with it and so trigger is the default setting that plays backflips I'll do it I'll show you in just to just to demonstrated again and in the sense dent's it would it will play it to the end of this play head uh that would be trigger or if we were to loop it it would continue to loop it so I can't say more and there's also a another mode called repeat and basically whatever you have the colonization of the clip to so you can you can set the's the colonization of these clips independently from the global colonization so by default able ten usually works with one bar of colonization meaning if you trigger clips they will wait to the end of that bar cycle in the grid of that time signature you're working in to re trigger to trigger the next event and uh you can lower the increment of that kwan ization to a small is an eighth or sixteenth which I prefer and you can actually uh you can do things like drumming and you can sound like you're in time when you're not and ah so this other toggle mode basically says ok you've got an eighth note colonization and if I will repeat for that kwan ties that specified quantifies the mountain for a cz long as you hold this clip down and after you you release the clip I'll play the rest of the duration of the sample just like a trigger mode so in this instance I have ah ah baby crying and right now it's it's actually in llegado saw me that's a disturbing sound isn't it so for a long as I hold it down hold that dot but we're going it will repeat that sound at whatever rate I've specified in the quant ization so I'm gonna take our take my baby back up tio my other clips for for performances sickly at a later time yeah and then that brings us to our next feature which is called llegado mode so ah ha llegado mode er is a little bit different there's a couple of god does and able to now the lookout abode in many is a little bit different because basically llegado and middie extends the notes so that they meet each other well I gotto in clip mode is a little bit different and regards that it it follows the time of the clips but you can change, eh? So if you have a group of audio clips and they're all in eight eight bars um you know during that eight bars you know there might be some some changes and uh like a I won't say let's use the sixteen bar example that might be better say you've got your working in chords you've got a chord progression that sixteen bars and the baseline what changes well if I were to re trigger clap during the during that sixteen bars than it would start at the beginning normally if it's only gotta mode, it can retain its position in time so you can have a group of clips may be of different instruments or voices and or different different sounds and you can if you those clips are in a group and they're set to llegado it's just this like auto button here then uh then those clips will retain their position in time but it will change the audio clip during playback so we've got a few here a few drum sounds and if you notice the cursor continues like maybe some fiery trigger it it doesn't re trigger the sound just keeps cycling. I've also got another clip over here to our left tribute at the same time so we got a boat is really helpful especially when you just want to follow a some pre established music and that needs to answer something that already exists on its own it's also good for ah technique called pocketing which is basically alternating the voice of the musical instrument for for variation let's take a closer look at these dummy clubs so I'm actually just triggering some different clubs so this is a delay won and that's this is a beat repeat insert effect so my crazy dial isn't working on my on one of my effects, so I'm just going to go in and see if I can turn crazy up a little bit. This president encoder seems to be working e suspected volumes turned down area no way so you could start getting really hands on triggering different effects and and playing with our clips at the same time and when we have dummy clips that allows us to put in some effects on imation's that will allow us to free up our hands and maybe performed some rhythm so in this example so I thought the chorus and this is but so my my crazy effect crazy dial is actually controlling the amount of the automation that's happening on that on that course. So basically I can also say I love you know this this is an eight bar loop um but one thing I would like to do is make the automation longer than the clip actually is so I can do something called unlinked king and now if I want I can make this clip uh another eight bars if I want tio and put in if I want to put in some different automation I could I could duplicate this and I'm saying, you know, I like this but I want to make it just a little bit more turn up as the kids would say so right now it's following this through way will have to wait until the end of the original cycle tio here the different one so here's the our different one sounds it's not really that much different so maybe I want to just do something totally different I couldjust dio slower so at the end of this eight bars should give us a different style of volume automation this chorus effect that's actually not dealing it's not doing exactly what I had automated what's actually what's happening is that I'm I must that I've got the same effect overridden and our crazy dial that is modulating that so maybe I'll go in and look at that chorus effect and we'll do something else so I can go in and if I click rate that'll bring up that and my and you could hear the effect changing getting more intense and so if I wanted tio make that rate effect uh longer than in a bar loop I couldjust unlinked the automation for the lane of that go back let's say unlinked then you just you can click and you can click on the link value and scroll up and it'll make your lips your your your automation longer or you can put you can actually type in the value if you want to you so aside from unlike ing on lopes there's also some middie actions or there's also some clip actions or I should say clip operations uh inside of the clip and we'll take a look here and you can so there's also a llegado for many but it's a little bit different so if I were toe highlight these notes and press llegado it would extend the notes into each other and that's a little bit different than the llegado mode we talked about earlier with audio because that just to reiterate it jumps between the different recordings but it retains the time and positioning uh so you can extend clips you can also do something that I find that I do when I'm step sequencing a lot is duplicate so you I'll expand my clips with a duplicate clip button you can also double time your many with the it's ah um that one of the twos and then there's a times two two double toe extend the length so those air there's would be called shrink and expand and it just happens or doubles the size of it you can also reverse your notes or invert them so these air really powerful functions that clip you also provides uh and you can take advantage of with your clips all right? So now I'm actually just going tio try I'm just next I'm going tio use some of these concepts together and show you how fun it is to, uh, to make some mexican music with ableto sprint splattered armory mix. E lumpy. Get done. No, no, right, right, right.
