Email Demo with ConvertKit
So, we need to get their email, and there are simple ways to do that, and it's not a matter of you creating a spreadsheet and managing it that way. There's software out there now that let's us manage our people's email addresses. This is also very important from a legality standpoint, again, I'm not a lawyer, but when you collect people's email addresses, you have to treat that with a lot of care. People are very sensitive to privacy and things like that. So, you want to be doing this within an email system that is committed to privacy, and adhering to all the legislation that is coming, a lot of it is coming up around how we deal with emails. So, that's a tangent, but it's important, which is why you should not be storing emails in a Google spreadsheet, or something, and using that method. So, we wanna hook up to a system that lets us store the emails, and then send people emails. And, that is gonna look like us going back into the Instapage, which is what we made our landing page in,...
and hooking it up to something called ConvertKit. And, before we jump into using ConvertKit, I just want to kinda cover the gist of what we're gonna go over in CovertKit, 'cause it could seem overwhelming. So, within ConvertKit, I'm going to tell you all about the basics of, kind of, the three components that make up ConvertKit. The idea of forms, sequences, and tags, and we'll touch on automations, too. Then we're gonna see exactly how we can connect ConvertKit to Instapage so they talk to each other, which is not confusing, so don't worry. And then we're gonna see how we can create our first email auto-responder, so that when someone signs up from our landing page, they will automatically get an email, just like the dog riding the lawnmower. And then, we're going to see the basics of how to compose more emails and different types of emails we could send, and some other cool things that I like about ConvertKit. So, we talked about testing earlier, you can A/B test your subjects of your emails, which is really helpful. And, we're gonna look at, briefly, automations, which I'll tell you about when we get there. So, we are going to jump over to ConvertKit. So, we're going to, first of all, take a look at Instapage just to remember what we're doing here. So, we had our landing page, and if you recall, we have this field email address. Yes, I need lawn help. And, if you are brand new to the world of landing pages, and HTML, and things, we're not writing any code on our own, but this thing is called a form. You probably know that, but just is case you didn't. So, this is a form, and we're gonna make this form talk to ConvertKit. So, before we can do anything, before we can connect ConvertKit and Instapage, we need to go over and do some setup inside of ConvertKit. So, I'm gonna walk you through, we're gonna set up a form, and set up what's called a sequence, which is going to send these automated emails. And, ConvertKit is great because they've got this 30 day free trial, so you can mess around, see if you like it, you can use something else, but it's just, within 30 days, you should be able to do this no problem. So, this is my, kinda, demo account right now, but when you first log in, you see all these options up here, forms, automations, sequences. So, the way that we need to go about this is first we need to create a form. So, a form is like a collection box, and that form is going to also live on that landing page we made. Remember where it said email, and submit your email address? We need to make a form before we can do anything, because without a form, the emails have nowhere to go. So, the form is the little storage box for our emails. I've already made these, but I wanna walk you through doing it, so you're not lost when you try and do this on you own. So, we go into CovertKit. I'm going to say form, and I'm walking you through this because yes, I told you earlier, you can copy a lot of this from some links I'll give you, but I want you to be able to do it on your own. Here's why, because if something breaks, you wanna know how it works to be able to maybe go in and fix it. So, this should take some of that intimidation factor away. So, you wanna create a form, and there are many different types of forms, and if we were making a form for a website, or blog, or something, we might want to get fancy and make it maybe more visual, and have some little image of, in this case it's for a book you're giving your email address to get, but because we are connecting this over to our Instapage, we just wanna choose this very basic one over at the right. They don't even have names, but that's fine. So, we choose the simple one. So now, we're making a form. So, remember, the form is like the collection box, the storage house, for all of our emails. So, first of all, we need to name our form, and we'll just name it Test Mowing Form. Cool. And, don't forget to save because there's nothing worse than realizing it didn't autosave. So, you wanna save it. Great. So, now you can see we have first name, email address, subscribe. So, the next thing we need to do is we wanna go into the settings, and this could look pretty crazy, so don't worry, a lot of this doesn't apply whenever we are connecting this to a landing page elsewhere, so a few things we want to be sensitive about. First of all, we want to, see this thing called sequence settings? So, sequence we can think of like this, sequence is a group of emails. That's all you need to remember. It should just say, "Emails they should receive," or something, but a sequence is a group of emails. So, whenever someone signs up to this form, whenever they give us their email, we then want to say, "Okay, now send that person "into a sequence, a sequence of emails." So, we're going to go here, and I already created them, but let's say we were going to create a new sequence, so we would say, "Create a new sequence," and then this is going to jump us into creating the sequence, which is just a group of emails. So, we're going to call this Roger Mowing Welcome Demo. Then, we're just going to say, "Create the sequence." And then, we're in this new page, so we're now within this sequence, if you will, and it could look a little intimidating, so let me give you the lay of the land. So, up here, this is our sequence, the name we just gave it. And, what we have over at the left is kind of a list of all the emails that are a part of this sequence. And, when you first start a sequence, they give you a default one. So, we could add a bunch more here. And, a few things. Whenever you make your first email, let's say this one, this is the email we wanna send as soon as someone signs up, so boom welcome to Roger. We're not worrying about the text right now, but awesome you're on the list. Just we'll deal with that. So, we have our email we're going to send to people when they register, and the great thing is you can decide when you wanna send that. So, do we wanna send it one day after? You could say, "10 days." We want it to send automatically, so we are going to put send zero days, which means it going to send immediately. It's kind of weird logic there, but zero days send the email immediately. And, no one is going to receive this email until it's published, so if this were real, we would say, "Published," and that means now when we save this, if someone were to sign up on our landing page, after we connect it, they're going to start doing these, getting these emails. But, let's say we had some more ideas. Welcome email two, and we were kinda brainstorming what else we might put in this sequence of emails we could send to people. Welcome email three. Let's do a fourth. Just, by the way, this green thing over at the left, when you first sign up, it's kind of your progress bar, and it's ConvertKit's way of trying to make sure you're create your first form, do these things. So, that's why that's in the way right now. They also have nice chat people, but okay, oops, email four. So, okay, what's great here now is even though we're only really focused on sending that first email now, we could start brainstorming out what other emails people might receive days after. And, if we decided, okay, three days after they get the welcome email, we wanna send them another email. You can just easily say, "Send it three days later," and you wanna send it any day of the week. Maybe you decide you only wanna send it on Friday or something, I don't know, you can do that. So, that's kinda the basics of sequence. So, the sequence is a collection of emails that someone is going to receive automatically. So, let's go back to our form. So, we have now our test form, and we have, when we click into the form, or when we click back into our sequences, we can see our test sequence. It's this one. I had a few other demos happening, but we have this one, and now the question really is, "Well, that's great, but it's still not talking "to Instapage yet."

I have taken several CreativeLive courses on how to start a business. This one has some of the best content and practical information on the "what" AND the "how" of validating your products. I highly recommend. The one thing I wish she would have gone into more depth on is how to find people for market research. She covers where to find them, but not enough detail about how to engage them. Even with that missing I would still highly recommend.

The course is really complete and interesting. She shared a lot of useful tools and techniques that can be applied.
