Workshop Introduction
(upbeat orchestra music) This is the "Essential Aerial Photography Workshop," and I am Chris Burkard, your teacher. (music continues) You don't need to go far to create amazing work. In fact, one of my favorite things on earth is being able to create impactful new ways of seeing the world from simply elevating your perspective. (music continues) Behind me actually sits the very first plane that I ever flew in with my camera. It's a biplane. It's located in Oceano Airport right by my house. And I think it was about 15 years ago that my girlfriend got me a flight for my birthday and allowed me to fly around the coast. And from that very moment on, I was hooked. I had all of a sudden seen this place that I grew up under a new perspective and a new light and in a new way. I could see the mountains and the rivers feeding into the ocean. I could see different little seaweed blooms out in the water, rock formations, piers. All of a sudden everything that I had grown up with and seemed secon...
d nature started to look different. And so this passion for aerial photography was born. And I guess one of the most interesting things about it is it has really cemented this idea that you don't need to travel super far in order to experience the world in a totally new way, and also to create a new, or breathe new life in your images. And so for me, I would hope that we can understand that our seemingly uninteresting backyard can all of a sudden blossom with life, if we're able to breathe something new into it. A new perspective, simply elevating our view, right? It's such a great way to see the world in a new way. In this workshop, what I'm hoping to do is take you through a couple different types of shooting. One would be simple aerial photography from Cessna or a helicopter. We're gonna be jumping into both, right? And really what gear might you want to take? What safety precautions would you want to take and consider? We're also gonna talk about how would you plan a shot or a shoot for something like that? How do you communicate to the pilot? We're gonna be going over the step by step process of simply just going to a place maybe you've never been and trying to document this area by a resourceful planning stage that would really dive into maybe Google Earth and/or utilizing some other images you've seen online, as well as sort of planning out your own shot. I wanna take you through that communication with the pilot, explaining to them what you're hoping to achieve so that there's no gray area. And then the second thing I really wanna touch on is the importance of shooting air to air, or what somebody might consider as formation flying, where you're shooting with two planes in the air. Where you might be shooting from a helicopter to a Cessna or a paraglider or somebody in a trike or any type of craft, and you're trying to basically orchestrate these two things. Now this is much more complicated and usually requires a lot more expertise on the pilot's part, but also a deeper level of explanation on your part. I also want to touch on knowing your surroundings, right? And what I mean by that is your cockpit, your plane, the different types of crafts you might be in. I'm gonna slightly touch on what it's like to shoot out of maybe an open craft, like a paraglider or a paramotor or even a trike, as that's been my experience quite a bit, and how it differs from being inside of a Cessna, or something along those lines. Also just that communication with your pilot, how to make it as effective as possible. Now, why are we teaching this workshop? Why am I teaching this workshop? Because if there's one thing I know about aerial photography, it's that it's expensive. It doesn't matter if you're utilizing a drone or you're hiring a pilot or you're hiring multiple planes, is that it's expensive. It's expensive to get up in the air. It can be costly. It can be a time consuming process. And for me, the most important thing is to give you as much education as possible so that when you go out there and you take your first mind blowing flight and you create this incredible body of work, that you do so with all the preparedness you can. So that that time and that money is worth it. And so with that, I want to jump right in to the theory of aerial photography and really what we're hoping to achieve.
