Working with Video & Audio
Ok let's, switch gears and let's talk about using video let's create a new slide presentation here let's delete this, clean it up a little bit. How important do you think video is in your slide deck? And I know that depends on what you're doing what your audience is. Yeah, I think so. I think I think video john where you going to say something? I love it like I just videos fun people engages people. It gets your attention right away. Yeah, you stop talking for a minute and you sort of let the story tell itself you suggesting something? You see video right now my mouth is a little a little dry, but I'll stop talking. In fact let's do that. We're gonna add some video to this slide so I can stop talking for a minute. No, I agree one hundred percent I think video is great to really emphasize a point in your slide deck on and you can use videos in lots of different ways. You can use videos to really market a product or, you know, lots of different reasons and you can use video in very subtl...
e ways to, um I have an example here that I want to show you, um and this is actually a video that I used where I actually created this video and final cut okay, so final cut is a video, a linger video editing application, and I don't use all of the capabilities of final cut, but I use it just enough to really help help me to design some really good slides and here's just one example that I made in I seriously think I made this video in about two minutes, just a really, really quick and dirty video that I think can can help to make my slides really pop. So I'm going to bring this video in and it's nothing earth shattering but it's a really simple video. So let's, go ahead and play this preview just something like that. It's nothing magical, but it's just a really simple, simple video to use and of course, at this point, just like an image. Aiken resize this so I can shrink that down in this case, I actually wanted to fill this slide so let's undo that I wanted to fill that slide because I think it has a really nice textured background to it, and let me go ahead and add another slide here. And in this case, I'm selling motorcycles dick ottis, which are nice bikes so let's, go ahead and play this slide shows you can see what this looks like. By default when you insert a video into a slide it's not going to play that video automatically I'll show you a way to play that automatically but in this case I want I wanted to wait until I tell it to play this by clicking on the next button so in this case I got my slide and I'm going to go ahead and click the next button and that looks pretty good right? So if I'm going to give a presentation all about kevin allgaier then that would be a great a great little intro video to use and I could say something like welcome to all about kevin all guyer we're going to talk all about kevin allgaier and have that come up just when I say my name I don't like talking about myself but if I were that would be a really a really nice video to use so let's go ahead and his escape if we select that video there are a few properties that weaken used to adjust how are videos play if we click on that video and click on the movie tab? This will give us some some really good options to use one of which is we can control the volume so if we have a particular video that has some audio to it and maybe the audio is loud in this particular video but then we have another video that's more on the quiet side we can't adjust the main output audio system to match every single video independently we want to adjust that audio and leave it alone but if we wanted to bring the audio levels down just on this one we simply bring this slider down to maybe fifty percent volume and that will adjust the video audio volume on that video but just that video not on all of the videos okay we can also edit video in here not in the sense that you are thinking of like you can and final cut but you can edit the starting point and the ending point so for example if we have a fifteen minute video that somebody has sent us that we want to play just the middle two minutes worth we can actually take antrim the first couple of minutes off of that video and the last couple of minutes off of that video so this is a not a good example for this particular one but you can see that it's actually not going to play the first ah one second what about the first second or a couple of seconds of this video is going to start at a certain point and then stop at a certain point so that's really nice because quite often people will say ok I want to play this video but I only need that little piece you know I need to bring that into final cut or some other video editing application and do all this funky you know wizard reworked to my video just to bring it back in again so this is a really easy way just to trim that up and played just what you're looking for. So now if we play this so it's going to this is the key frame here this is where it's going to start and that's where it's gonna end just that piece right there. So a simple, simple terming with that let's go in and bring that back out. We can also change the poster frames, so the poster frame is what the audience will see before the video actually plays. So for example, if we set the poster frame to something like that and then we go out to play our slide it's going to sit there until we hit the next button and when I click next it'll play the entire video so let's change that back out here we also have options to repeat the video so we can loop it or we can loop it back and forth. So for example, if we have an animation or jeff or something like that that we want to play that it goes forwards and backwards and forwards and backwards, we can do that or we could have it loop forward forward for it just kind of repeats just like that so in this one let's, go ahead and set that to loop back and forth that will be interesting to see how that works and less player a slide show so forward and you can see it starting to shrink and it's just gonna do this over and over again now so again whether used looping or looping back and forth depends on what what the video is and what your intentions are with it when you loop something, it goes until you click next yes, exactly yeah when you click next it'll just go forever until you click next that's the indication that I'm done with the video the other option let's go and leave the loop back and forth on the other options we could start a movie on a click this is the default action what this is is it's it's waiting for us to click next before it starts the video? So let's, go ahead and turn that off because we've seen what happens with that we'll turn that off and we'll hit play and I didn't click anything on the laptop it just automatically started and now it's going to go ahead and look back and forth and back and forth so one example of this is in in part of my kino file that I used in a different class earlier there was a part where I did a slight transition from one slide into a video and I actually had that video play automatically. I did not set that video toe wait for me to press next because I wanted the video to play automatically assumes I transition from one slide to the next slide. So again, that depends on what your intentions are and what you're trying to convey with that video. Ok, the other thing that I wanted to talk about is with audio, so audio is also just like video and just like images and objects, audio is a really nice way to dress up your your slide deck. So I have an audio file here that I created in garage band, so you could use garageband. You could use logic pro, you can use lots of different audio editing applications or just like images and and even stock video. You can go out on the web and find lots of different audio files that you could use to help dress up your slide deck. Adding audio to a slide, as you can imagine, is really, really simple. So I have this audio file here and let's. Go ahead and preview that kind of a fun file so let's, go ahead and dragged that file into my slide deck and you'll notice what that does. It gives us a little visual indicator that we now have an audio file. As part of that slide so just like we could with the video just to a preview right here in the slide designer we can also click play here that will also give us a preview of that particular audio file just like with video we have a lot of controls over the audio that we use we can adjust the volume so for example if it's a little bit quiet waken increase that audio or we could decrease that audio I had to adjust my system value a minute ago to compensate but I could have done that in here is well and just like the video volume that would adjust the volume on just this audio clip we can also adjust just like we could on the video we could adjust the trim points so if we have a long audio segment of maybe someone speaking for fifteen minutes we could trim that inward on both ends and just play a certain portion in the middle. One thing I'll tell you about that is if you wanted to play pieces of a file you know, maybe a minute here and then another minute later on there are a couple of ways you could do that one is you could actually bring that file into garage band or some other editor and slice and dice it up that way and make it one clip and then bring it back in or another way to do that in within kino would be to actually dragged that file in twice the first one. You would trim the trim your points to a certain spot for the first section, and then on the second audio file, trim it in at a different section and the night you can play both of those files and it feels and looks and sounds as if you have taken it out, modified in editing application and brought it back in. And then just like with video, we can change the type of repeat so we can loop where we can look back and forth. That would be interesting on this one let's actually set that, and we can change whether we play the audio automatically or we wait for a click to play the audio. So let's, go ahead and play this, and one thing you'll notice here is that that blue indicator doesn't show up on the slide here. That's a hidden object again, just for our reference to make sure that we remember that we have an audio file in this slide. So at this point, I'll click next got some nice tunes going yes, it's gonna end here right now, it's playing backwards so in this case, back and forth, maybe doesn't make sense, maybe looping makes more sense. So we can change that by going back into the repeat, change it toe loop and hit play now, in this case, you know let's, go ahead and turn off this check box that says star audio on click and we'll click play and it starts automatically it's got a little trust me, I won't wait for trusting click this start audio when ewan click start audio and click, does that mean when you get to that slide? It automatically starts to music for you? Correct you in fact, let's, go ahead and add that on the second slide, just you can see what that looks like, so I'm gonna delete it from this slide and let's reinserted on this one here. So now I'm sorry, I put it on the same one, silly me, let's, go to the second slide and bring that in here, ok, so now we have that on the second slide and let's turn off that option there, okay? So we want that to play automatically on that second slide, so we'll go back to the first line will play our show and we'll go ahead and hit the next button place on that one reason maybe you wouldn't want to do that is if you wanted to introduce the audio segment or video so this works the same with audio and or video if you wanted to introduce that first, you would check that option like we've done here let's go back to this one so maybe you want to talk about something here advanced to the next slide and say you know we've got a really great sounding audio file that that kind of illustrates the sound that this motorcycle makes and you can click next on play that sound and I hope I was right that voters like I don't know if I would that doesn't sound very but you get the idea with that and so you have a lot of control over audio and video that you can use in your slide deck one thing I failed to mention with video let's go ahead and bring that video back in let's shrink that up so you can see that so in this particular case with this video I want this full screen because it just works well as an introductory video but just like I can with an image I can actually add a border around that as well. So if I go back to my style's tab I can come up here and choose a style for this for this video so let's go ahead and just shrink that up a little bit in fact let's couldn't get a twist why not let's go out and play this so now we have this what looks like an image, and when I click next because the default action is to wait for a click, click next. We're not playing that video in a slightly turned with a nice background border on the video. So again, it depends on how you want address things up and how you want to portray things in your slide deck everybody's a little bit different, and the things you're conveying and your slides are always going to be different, depending on on what it is you're the story you're telling, but again, it goes back tio, you have almost a full one hundred percent control over over the things you're doing in your slides. One thing just to kind of wrap that up is with video if you're going to use ah stock, video that's, that's easy, because it's already encoded in a way that allows you to drag and drop into the slide. If you're going to create your own, like I do with final cut, then you want to go through the encoding process on your own to either convert that to an m ovi file or an mp for something like that they will play once you've been coded, that file dragged that in, and you can play that in terms of audio, you want to make sure it's in a format that the kino can read. So that would be an a c audio format, or mp three or something like that. If I'm working on something in garage band, unlike images that I worked with in photo shop, where I could just take a raw, photoshopped file and bring that in with different layers with audio files and with video files, you have two encoded into a into a certain format, and then bring that format. And so garage band, for example, you have to in code, that is an mp three, and then bring that file in. So so that is working with images and video.

Never worked with Keynote before and this class very clearly sets it all up, explains and examples the larger bits as well as encourages exploring more detail as well. The tie-in to video at the end was surprising and very interesting. Thanks!
