Tools to Capture HDR Better
One of the things that you'll notice when you're working with HDR is that it requires stuff. If you're doin' this kind of HDR photography, there's generally things that you need. You need software to process stuff. People are like, "Oh, I love your pictures. "I think your pictures are great." I'm like dude, my pictures are in a can. It's a plug-in, you could buy it, it's done. Go get it, it's over here. I'll show you all the settings. It's 25. Right, you also need a tripod. Because what happens is a lot of the times, as you're doing these exposures, those exposures are gonna get longer and longer and longer and longer. So you're not gonna be able to handhold that. You may need a cable release. Because if you turn around and you do it, and Laura knows, like we were doing. Laura and I went out. Laura and I were at this location at the same time. (group laughing) I have to think about this. We were there and we were taking pictures, and was just like, look, look, look, if it touch it, if ...
I touch it, if I touch it. I don't wanna touch it, I don't wanna touch it. Because if you touch it, you can knock it over. The slightest touch of that shutter, is gonna mess up an exposure. Not good. When in doubt, if you do not have a remote, use a timer. Every camera has a timer. Anybody have a camera with them? No, no, nobody, okay. But more often than not, you could say your camera's on a timer, and if you press the timer, and if you have a bracket set, it will never shoot past that bracket. So you just set a timer for two seconds, hit the button, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, (rolling tongue) it'll shoot all of the brackets, and it'll stop. Not bad. And last but not least, shooting RAW. It's a good idea for you to have as much information as you can going into the picture.

It truly doesn't matter if this instructor creates work that looks different from what I like to make. What I got from this course were skills I needed to try something new. (In my case, I watched this before doing some interior photography, knowing I would need to use HDR in Lightroom.) RC teaches you how to set the camera up for bracketing and how HDR software works (in Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) Apply your own creative aesthetic once you nail down these basics and you'll thank him, too.

Just what I was looking for. Basics of what HDR is and the basic steps to do it. I do not care yet about making it realistic or not. I can get into advanced features later, but I am strongly leaning towards non-natural, more impressionistic, looks.
