Materials Overview
We're going to move right into the materials needed for this book, your basic materials that you need to start with. You always need a ruler of some sort. I have, ah, small ruler that I like to use for short cuts, but I also like to use a nonslip ruler that has a back on it, so it doesn't slip when you're cutting the paper using one of the two blades that you'll use. This is a box cutter it's handy gives a deeper cut and it's a little bit longer blade, but then you can also use an exacto knife, both really, really sharp blades. You want to have really sharp blades in order to cut the paper. So you want to be really careful and make sure you retract those blades a scissors for cutting any paper that we might use pencils are always a good idea for measuring a bone folder or some kind of soft ruler on the edge, for when you're at hearing paper using the adhesives against the other paper, you're going to use that to just straighten things out and really and he's get the paper to the other ...
paper it here really well, a little glue card with sticks in case you use elmer's glue. For any part of it you like to put little elmer's glue on the glue card to keep your glue in one place I like to use a glue stick every once in a while depending on the paper that I use double sided roll tape that's also handy I like to have a lot of it, he says handy because depending on what we're using whether it's a heavier paper or a vintage paper will depend on the adhesives we actually use it's always good idea to have it all which is a nice sharp stick of some kind which allows us to punch holes and then the other thing you're going to need is some kind of book binding tape or some other sort of adhesive tape that has a has a really strong stick in today's class we're going to be using this book finding tape which is an adhesive that needs a water base so I use a tiny little brush nothing too thick or too big and a little bit of water and that's what will it here the book fighting tape to each page that we use it could be any kind of bookbinding tape you just want to be sure to use water instead of your own saliva because this stuff is old and it can get a little toxic and then you're also going to need two pieces of chipboard ideally in a five by seven range about that size we'll talk about how you can use old book covers as well. We'll get into that part, too, but for now, our basic concertina collage book is going to use chip board to five by seven pieces at the end of the chip board, and we're going to use between three and four pieces of scored card stock scored. Card stock has a little scoring right down the middle, so it makes it easy to bend the way we're making our concertina collage book is a little bit different than other artists might make an accordion book, which normally consists of a long piece of paper cut down to size and then very carefully folded in exact measurements. I am not that exacting of a person, so I found that the best way to go about constructing this kind of book is using individual scored card stock and or reusing old vintage greeting cards, which also have that scored fold in them. Another thing you're going to need for this project is you're gonna want to gather the materials that you're gonna collage with. So I've chosen a number of materials that were going to use today. I've already chosen the theme for the book that I'm going to make, which is about a young girl who is entering her final year of scouts, so we have all kinds of fabulous little elements here in old ribbon and some old photographs of the girl I'm going to use some letters to spell out the word scouts were going to use some old book pages it's vintage paper, some marble paper so you want to gather all that material together and even if you pull it all together in a big pile and you can kind of pick it up and pull it one at a time it gives a lot of inspiration when you have it all together color is a great way to gather ideas use a color theme when you're creating your book, which is what I've done here kind of a greenish yellowish color theme and so I know anything I pulled from here is going to go with anything else, so you definitely want to get your collage materials together if we extend ourselves into the book a little more I love using washi tape and it's not in adhesive but it's a really fun paper tape that's a great decorative element to the book so I've chosen some washi tape in the color scheme of my book and I'm going to stick with that ribbon if we end up going a little bit further, maybe we do a pull out or maybe we end up closing the book with ribbon I've chosen some ribbon in the same color family as my greenish bluish color themes, so we're going to keep that on hand if we end up any lacing, any pages together, you're gonna want either a little string or a little ribbon as well. So that's, good to have on hand, and sometimes it's kind of fun. It's, a three d element to so something into your book. So I always like to have a little threatened needle on hand as well, so those elements will come in as we start. Collage. Ng will really walk mohr through these fund materials.

I really loved this course. So many creative ideas that sparked my imagination. Molly's instructions are really clear, and I loved that things didn't need to be perfect to work well. I applied what I learned immediately to make a concertina book for a friend's 50th birthday. I'll definitely be doing more of these. A great way to make gifts or use for your own memorabilia.

This was a really fun class. I’ve made a few concertina books in the past, but I’ve never added other elements like pop-ups and inserted tabs. I got lots of ideas for new things to try, and a really good demonstration of the basics. I especially appreciated the discussion of all the alternatives - things like different kinds of adhesives, and when you might use each one.
