Organizing and Syncing Footage

Once again I'm really reeks I can't believe it's day three you know that the time as you agree you would agree it's just gone so fast so we've got a lot of great stuff to get through today obviously including postproduction color grading and color correction and how he you know, piece the story together and I wantto obviously invite you in terms of my work flow um you know, obviously we're att the moment we're very busy and a lot of editing I get my editor to do so um you know, while I'll be able to show you what you what you needed to get started, you know, I'm not as technically seven years you know, I haven't had that practice that my editors have had so I thought I'd let you know that because I won't get to advance with all the process, but we'll go through the essentials that you need that's really important to build your story and and go through the thought process required when you're thinking about, you know, getting a little mini stories and all that stuff. So all right, so so...

I use way use final cut x, which is the you know, as you know, the new final final cut there's been a lot of people that have had mixed reviews with final cut I initially said no, I'm not using this you know, I'm used to final cut seven and I'm happy with that and I was happy with also premiere which had similarities with final cut seven I'm not going with final cut ten I'm happy with it and though I don't do a lot of editing, I still you know use it myself for for particular projects and it's great it's the workflow can be very, very fast for you can you can be sensational terms of fast culling culling out your footage really efficiently and everything is compact with final cut ten so I think it in the day it depends on what works for you in terms of the editing software once upon a time actually used I'm not sure if you guys know if people watching tedious grass valley I've used that as well in the past so it will comes down to you know you know, building the story again you know it's like the gear way spoke about it's not so much about the gear but it's about you know, the thought process and how you put it together and understanding the concept behind what you're doing. So first thing that I wanted teo go through which is somewhat basic but it's really essential is organizing your data so you've spent you captured all these awesome images right? You're super psyched when you're excited, you know is an awesome day then you got all these all this data for this footage the first thing you need to do is obviously make sure that you back it up assumes you can and keep it in a safe place so a dinner the night you know usually I you know I keep it keep it in you know I don't like backing up on the same night because I'm tired but I keep it some way safe that I know that it's not gonna get mixed up with any other forty eight year or any other islands and then the next day I'm fresh and I'll get my contrada and I recommend getting a good cod rado and you start captain your footage when you captured footage and I'll just show you a new example how we label our folders it's so important to label your folders um correctly so correctly and in a in a systemized fashion so everything is easy to to access says you can see here this is um gotta center and fire us because you guys know more about them you've seen that film so thiss different folders here but the main one I was going to refer you to the same day that it was the folder for the editor something separate I've just kept it there because as it back up but this is this is the wedding folder this is all the footage we captured on the winning day if you look at that that's pretty straight forward right you've got one father for the audio you've got folders for, you know the prep bride and groom there's basically two cameras for the ceremony very very clear about it and I personally you know, I've seen some people some you know, some production people production companies use the ones and twos which can work like card wan card too if that works for you that's great, but I just find that if you label your your your folders according to the state the segment of the part of the day that you shot like the bridal prep it's just it's gonna make things a lot more efficient for you and just avoids any confusion like where's this from and, you know, what's this car what's in this folder so when you look at it you know, right that's that's the groom for th I know what that is and I'm super organized and that will help you with your workflow yeah, because the more like like with the planning yeah, when when you plan well and you get all the information you need, then you're going to be better equipped for the day. Yeah, same thing with editing if you super organized we have we folders correctly labeled that's comic life a lot easier when unity and you know why I've I've made the mistake where not mistake, but I've it's not I it's not like I've had this system always sometimes I've had like folders all over the place like old man what was where's like the footage that we got from the location shoot looking here maybe it's in this dry let me just access that you're crazy you know when you spend more time doing that then actually doing the creative stuff right so you can see that it's pretty self explanatory you've got all your folders it reception even like down to reception entry um the only one there it's a little bit like all what's in there the reception no one generally that I know for me I know that's like candids maybe details things like that that's that's my little system cool. So you got all this footage and now the next what we do, what I do next step is because what I'm providing for you after thinking about what you providing the couple you know what do you what what are they expecting? What have you promised them and what we provide them and I'll go through this with the packages and what we provide so then you get a bit of a idea and then you can you can basically develop your own package and your own style in terms of what you give to your client we provide them with I mention before cinema highlights and a main feature that we call something cool like a taco edit to ceremony forwards and the toast or speeches in four and the first dance so with that in mind first thing I do is I sink the ceremony because all I would need that it's like tearing the two birds with one stone I'm sinking the ceremony first because I have that ready to go to get ready and put together for the doctor at it but also I need you know I need the good audio or sync up with the footage for my highlight and the way I do that is I use plural eyes you guys heard of fleur allies plural eyes three which is the latest version of plural eyes is super powerful and it will face I'll show you it was basically sink your footage as you'll see it sink like a zit happens you'll see it they're just show you so what I'll do is because I'm the sinking may shouldn't take too long but actually what I'll do is I'll sink the sandra I've actually pre organized a bit like before hands just so it's there's a backup but I'm actually going to show you now I'm goingto go through the steps I take when I add the footage ladle out and then the steps that he's good with final cut ten and paralyzes a system so I'll show you that system how we put the foot each implore allies place it in that program and and then exported to final cut ready teo edit let's do that yet so what we have here this is interface as you can see it's very user friendly there's not a lot of complicated things happening. You can see that there's a timeline here and that we're just basically it's not like an editing thing. It it would just show you once you once you place the footage into the folders, it will display the information without the footage in those a timeline so you can see it and then we'll show you what I want. I stop explaining and then I'll just do it and you'll see. All right, so you got camera one and so you got one folder here for camera one camera and one here for you. But you're gonna have more than one, right? So let's, add something, all right, and then one for audio. So for this exercise, I'll show you two cameras into two sources of audio. Yeah, um, you would probably have up to full five, you know, he could have like a singer. You could have one for andean, one for band line out and eccentric cetera, but for this exercise I will show you two cameras to audio and this is so easy it's so good, I love it I love thing I love win think when it comes to like technical things confuse I want them to work and I want them to be very straightforward and that's why plural eyes is he's fantastic you know I remember back in the day back in days like about talking as if you know I was twenty years ago but before paralyzed you know, I was always thinking footage manually yeah, same yet there you go so on wasn't a pain and it takes ages it took me half a day to do that I don't recommend you do that you get yourself that's that's another thing I recommend you get invest don't skim on this right because this is an investment this is going to save you time and time for you is money right? Because you then you could be spending time instead of spending half a day trying to sink something you could spend that replying to emails and that's business I believe plural eyes if I quite quickly I think it's two ninety nine a one ninety nine yeah so I mean yeah for a sinking software some people like to beat state but I would strongly recommend just bite the bullet and get it it's a really powerful all right let's just see how how it performs so the first camera I'm sinking ceremony once again is a reminder and isn't it great sea as I mentioned because it's important to have the labels on your folders when I add the footage and it comes up with a pop up so I'll just start again camera one bank may ceremony it's that I don't have to go uh can to camp through people hang wisdom was the ceremony is that the ceremony that's all the ceremony let me think now none of that right there it is apple a command a and that's a shortcut to select all the footage I want at right and camera to ryan so that's the second camera actually, what I'll do is I'll actually take that back and I'll tell you why delete that I'll go camera one the second camera because I want camera because with camera to this like more gaps here so I want the footage with that is how I work, right? I'm just explained to you why I do this for me it could be different for you, but I want the footage on the timeline that has all the gaps on the top and then the main camera, which is more of the safety camera um on the bottom this is how work I just like it that way so just add sir money second camps are easy bang ad and there it is it's a lining the footage there and while that is happening it's thinking I should be able to go the up to camera to add main ceremony command, eh? She select all ad that's, adding that this marriage is like he's going all right and then the audio and I've got a forty oh folder right and I go one folder for reception one for ceremony which one? I don't know which one it is I ceremony I knew that okay? And so what? Few there but what I'll do is I'll start with one and I think on that and under the same four cameras audio too everything's labeled I know where everything is all right iet's there's no getting you know there's no spending time and finding out where the ceremony footage is this is my work flow right thiss does not mean that this is the only way to do it but you know you can you should be able to get it if you haven't. If you haven't done any thinking before, this should give you a baseline. Yeah, you said that the zoom has ah good enough battery life toe last like the whole wedding but what about memory cards are can one memory card record the whole night? And if so, like what? What size memory card to ruby using so firstly I would split between the venue audio like the recording of the venue audio and the recording off the server ceremony audio, I'll split them up between two cuts just to spread the loss, right? Sorry, spread the risk that's, why man? So, you know, you could probably, you know, you could easily, I would say either a g, even a gig, and definitely sixteen gig on sd card cover the whole day, but I would recommend split him upto after ceremony, my special vault, my spoke about my vault that goes in the vault and that's it, and I get a u s d a this city that so cheap, right? And I recommend bed like minimum four gig per per section, like peru, like, so are the ceremony or toast I gave you? Definitely, you'll be safe under percent, and you let that role you can, because the great thing about having a gig, you can start recording, even let's, say, twenty minutes before, because when it's like close to the ceremony, start time, you're very busier, it's hectic, you getting detail shots, people coming in and you know what you know, I've I've I've made the mistake, and I forgot to press record, I've done it right, I've done a mistake, but I've learned never to do it again, and you know you've meant, you know, it's nothing wrong with making mistakes, right? But you obviously you know, you do everything you can to avoid them but you have to learn from them and then look for another system and you know, something I obviously did I did that, you know, fi's ego, you know, starting out but because we had other back ups, it wasn't a disaster it's just we spend more time in the editing suite, you know, using other sources of the audio and trying to clean it up that's, right and it's all good. All right, so we got audio tracks we got out, we have our camera footage and then basically what I will do now, actually, I would firstly it's important to save your project because then you get this spinning wheel of death and then you start, like, sweating like, no, no, don't you good thing about final cut ten I mean, I used to curse about it and I, if any friends from home like it's any like watching this and say alf, you're you such like, you like giving final cut ten so much crap and now you're incredible live and you're talking it up, man, you're pathetic because I didn't like it because he was it's a totally different system, and I'm still because I'm you know, I was spending a lot of time with declining direction and the shooting I don't spend as much time as the editors so I haven't utilized the full power but I've seen it happen and it is really aval extremely powerful and you'll see the interface it's really cool to say project and for this exercise because I've already action of actually worry sink the footage before um this is a backup in case something crashes and I will keep it on the same drive and I'll just basically name it sandra and faraj sara sara like just like ceremony and then what happens is when it saves, it will automatically put a sink at the end of it because when you're exported to final cut to the timeline it'll automatically say seek so they will tell me that this is the forty should as pain sink from paralyzed that's fine with me that's all I need to sander and fire ajit has a name I can say that awesome it saved its great then always synchronised, oppressed, synchronized and what's this cool yeah, it is amazing and it's pretty much done you don't even have time to get a coffee so and still happening but it's almost done you could go to one of the program but do something else but it's done now there is just a highlight something this footage here that's some footage that's not going to sink because it's the footage I've captured before the actual ceremony like the footage outside the church you know the black hand off the mentoring and people arriving obviously because it's you know that's not going to sink that okay I just think it's not worth going through the footage and saying ok look let's just isolate the footage in the ceremony we just put it all there and then we can deal with it in the timeline okay so everything's it's all scenes were happy yeah for a few hundred bucks you just saved me half a day's work that's amazing yeah thank you you don't thank me thank we realize it's it's really great because you could spend up to half a day um sinking footage manually and that's why justo backtrack a little bit do you remember when we were shooting the interview and I mentioned how it's important that you you capture like good decent audio with with your cameras because if you're if you're if the audio on the camera is distorted or too low there is that there's a chance that it won't sink yeah especially it's too low enough to have done that like I've done that for the for the gift giving right I forgot to turn their I forgot to turn the mike on on the camera so the footage of footage is there it's great but there's no one here I've been through pluralism might you sink like how dare you had such a great relationship and now you're doing this to me and I realized oh boy there is no sound and you know that's that's cool it's just that I had to follow I had to go by the lips so I yeah it's don't ask me how I did it but I did it and that's another story and so we're okay everything sink it's all good I'm very happy you're happy and then you press export so you prepared this sink footage for final cut ten right now this plural eyes is not just for final cut ten let me just make that clear you can export that's who premiere is well I'll show you your export and you've got the option there for premier yeah a quick question about singing the audio with the cameras audio okay, so you have four files there what happens to the camera's audio? Oh, we'll show you that in the timeline okay? Yeah it's still there still there it's still there. So yeah, I basically bring all those levels down especially when you've got four tracks you may have won for ambient and then the other one for like the lectern you'll see that there's, different channels and different things happening and the audio on the camera is pretty much it's not required. You could possibly use it to mix you know your sounds to get like a bit of an ambient yeah hi sometime he lowered the ambient but it's not worth it you're spending time to do something that's really not going to add much right? So yeah all right, so what you do then you go here and you got these options right? You've got you need two click final cut final cut pro ten xml and you need to click create multi cam multi cam clip what that means it prepares it so you can cut it as multi cam if you don't do that, then you won't have it won't basically prepare your footage for the for the feature the multi cam feature because when final cut ten was first released didn't have multi cam and people were doing you're still doing the picture and picture which means that you have the two the two files on top of each other and then one of them you make the footage sorry, the picture smaller and then you've got essentially two images that you can see it's a workaround, but now they've got this feature so you can click on multi cam sorry prepares that feature for final cut and then you click the bottom one because that's basically saying once you click explored its gonna go directly and open up in final cut actually I'm going to get back and rename I should have named it something else so it's like test in class I'm going to call this gemma just I'm not mixed up because I've got the other one there and and all right so let's go to export we get a final cut ten we want to send that there and prepare a multi can and we go export and it's exporting I'm just looking at that oh, hang on did I yeah right. That shouldn't happen that's okay, we'll just go find captain all right? Okay so I didn't have final cut ten open I forgot my bed not a problem so let's just backtrack a little bit it's not not a big issue which actually I can now drum your joy your attention to this software before we open up final cut that's fine. This is this is still ready to go nothing's happening is just what you need to have final cut ten open not a big deal oh, good night panic so let's just come here. This is called event manager x this sea with final cut ten it's a little bit different with premier in the other software you have like a project fall you just click on the project fall and it opens up with final cut ten it's based on events that's the system they call like this event and within those events you have folders and in that event, you have the project, so this is a way basically tio open specific events that have the fault, the projects that you need to work on so there's a few he that I've ticked only because I want to show you some color correction with different images, that's all on dh I've over the course of the two days, I've demonstrated a few sequences and and shots, and I've just basically put them in different dark events this's my little work for sorry projects you got his shooting technique, the really have I had the reception entry, I showed you that so I just had it in that way, so it was my little my little workflow, okay, so the idea here is, um, so assuming you, you've already like, exported to final cut ten and it's it's ready, let's say you closed it because you need to do something and go out and come back when you come back. You just basically click on the events that you've created, which I'll show you how you name the event in final cut ten and that's how I hear you say that and then in here is the project, which corresponds to that event, because if you don't click the event when you open up your a final cut through event manager and you only do the event like you only take the event and let's say you click like here's got bts alfio gets the wrong project far right you're gonna have the event there and it's going to say like missing like you miss it there's no project to kind of um that it can connect with so you make sure you're like he remembered okay, so I I had a project fall for a different things one for my rough couple go through like the rough cuts and that's how I build a story just click all of them because I need all these followers to show you different, you know, color, correction methods and things like that it's like oh everything's oh good I'm happy with I'm personally happy we've found the folders and the events that I've chosen because I need them and I click it and what that does it will open up what you've requested basically you've requested I've requested these events with these project falls and it will now do what I what I say I demand that you open up these project falls any any questions? While while that spinning in kind of giving you a mini heart attack night so good any questions, guys there is a sinking audio sinking already on final cut pro or you wear that? How much better is I liked how flora just you just threw it all in there but with the final cut one you've got to you know, kind of click and click and kind of match and stuff do you like your eyes better than that is a lot quicker it seems like it is it's a lot quicker and I actually have tried thie the sinking feature in final cut ten and it's only for very basic sinking yeah I've tried to do it like with multiple clips and it just doesn't work that's what I what I have found c definitely need paralyzed so okay so there's a few things opened up here don't be alarmed about that I've purposely I've opened up a few different projects because I wanted to show you different different things but like just imagine basically let's just ignore this now because we're back teo plural eyes and I'll show you now so these basically see these these are the events right? It's just thinking again my work flow is this what I do is I'll show you I'll leave that there so we come back here to plural eyes we've done you've gone through the sinking process put all the footage together we click synchronized like wow it's happening who? Ok then we click export the timeline and now it's going to work now it's like a final cut ten he's open something okay all those a ticked and happened very soon so he said what do you use for editing ten cool how do you find it a lot lot quicker I used it's kind of a little generic program like pinnacle studio added something like that but this is I mean all the just how quick it isthe especially when you're using a lot of audio and video clips that you just move a lot along a lot quicker and you wouldn't something else I like it a lot I don't know if you like you said you switch from something else you said he had a little trouble with it at first so it's a different system altogether so and you know I haven't maximize its power towards full capacity because I just haven't had the opportunity to because I'm doing other things with the business I don't have the editors to do that um but it's great this is basically the forty second I've just sink and sometimes this is where if you're new to final cut ten and when I was you know even sometimes now it's I need to be careful with final cut ten thatyou don't shift things out of sync it's very easy to happen because final cut ten has this feature this magnetic feature everything like sausages when you cut something goes yeah doesn't least funny movements and thinks you need to be aware of that and um just be carefully you know shift things we love the place okay so so that's the same thing that's the now what what I'll do now is I'll go too, okay, so you see how I've called a demo, so then I know which one I'm referring to, um, but it'sa one actually prepared before that's cool. So I'll go to that one, and this is I'll just change the this is just the view you can zoom in so you can see one clip on wait for it to stop spinning, and I just get rid of this. This is in a moment, I'll show you the loom a graph when you're doing the exposure's exposure correction adjustment. Uh, sorry, so here is that's, basically called videoscope, so I'll just hide that seem to see the footage. Okay, so let's make that smaller that's is basically one clip that's, not multiple clips that jagged line means is continuing. I figure it like this, you'll say it's, just hang on that's one clip.
