Creating Artwork & Signage

I just wanted to show you guys basically how I accomplished, um, I don't think I need this great now, yeah, you, um doing a project like, if I was like a frame and hang it and put it on a wall, and I'm using an example for this of what I did for of a friend of mine, so she wanted something that said, I love lucy so it's like, great three little words, you got it, um, and what I do for the most part is I draw out what I'm writing and that way, you know, we're just write it out with pencil and then taking the script and so that way, you can see, you know, much like I did with the envelope where the letters were going to fall in and a lot of times I do is that a slant? So, um, I'm sort of sheeting since I know what I did here on the finished project so it's not completely like, you know, fresh off the bat, but you can see where it's like lucy, if I'm gonna do like, big a letter for lucy, it might run into love because you don't want to do like you're not going to use this sort of guide sh...

eet to do this sort of project you're not gonna have like a lot of space in between the two of them to make sure that nothing intersects in effect that's kind of nice when these sorts of things do interact with each other so you know um you know, maybe you want your wife to come up and play around with the word love so or have your will be part of your eye that sort of thing so these air the things that you do in your initial sketches you're like what what intersects with what like what what looks good to like have you know intersect so and what should we not deal like if I was to say um usually is love and light but that's not going to drive the point home so we're going to light and love and switch it up just so you guys can see and I would just feel like and ampersand there um so you're going to see some issues happen here because you have us l and love and uh maybe it's gonna hit the g and maybe even those and hit the g so those are the things that when you do this sort of sign it you're gonna want to like really pay attention to so you're gonna want to like maybe shorten that g and bring it around like that? Um the l was actually kind of in a good place now that we're not worrying about the g as much so I know this is a very quick overview but you know, it's just when you're doing things like this write it out first like don't start off with these materials just make sure that you're like ok sketching it out, getting everything situation spatially um and then you know, backto I love lucy's and now that I know basically what fits in where very briefly I can be like, ok, so now let's talk about what I want to do with the l a you know, going to like the flourishing so maybe I could have it reach all the way over here and to loop around and maybe that why I wanted to get a little bit more playful and but maybe I don't maybe motorists that so you know, these are all parts of, like planning this situation out for situation this artwork out which obviously requires any racer which I use a lot of so and then oh, by the way, speaking of races when you're doing this sort of work, you want to keep an eraser that's like white it's not going to like leave marks he's like one of those pink erasers that might lead paint marks um and just nothing like those what is that those gum erasers those tend to be a little funky too, and they'll definitely smudge your your your wash so and that's assuming that I finished this last off with caution so basically we're just going to just, you know, come on fiddle with this a bit and maybe I want to do the l just a little bit more crazy and have that come around so that's the basic gist of it um I was to go and just do this full size this is something where I would just try my lines out so now that your lines of drawing you can like start to sketch out just basically you know, your letters and to start off with you're going to want to like kind of fake you're down stroke so I mean, obviously with the pencil you're not going to get the broad stroke so you can just sort of draw them in and actually you're gonna want to do the whole letter first um but considering that you're gonna have to fake your down strokes, you're gonna want to like, space out your letters just a slow light amount more then you would regularly and we're gonna put lucy maybe like right? And here so and again, since these there are really any a senders and lucy, I'm not worried too much about running into here s o from this point on, I just want to sort of just to get a sense of how this is all going to fit in um with each other or you know, with the letters in each other's says just for I'm just going to draw and these um these down strokes and it really helps to have like an assortment of pencils when you're doing this so that you're not sorry basically you're not um having to do like a lot of filling with same sort of pencil you doing the airlines in because it's a lot easier to do like a nice heavyweight pencil or using anyway pencil when you're doing it the filling in um and I'm doing all of this with pencil and you know, just trying to get like all of this stuff put into my mind because or sorry put onto paper because I'm going to actually eventually if I was to do this completely here I would actually take this sheet of paper and place it under my bristol here take sheet out place it under and then trace over it with my calligraphy pen so basically I would finalize all of this artwork and then you know make sure was exactly how I wanted it and then trace over it with my calligraphy pen now if you're doing really small items you know, like place cars and just little tiny signs like if you having like, uh party or something and you have all sorts of weird cheeses out which I d'oh um, you know, it's, just like if I would have, like, a lot of people on a lot of cheese is over, I might make some funny little signs or, you know, like with just telling people what she's is, what, in that case, there's? No way I would go sit there and do all this just for, like, to say, like poverty, which I would never serve, but you know what I mean? It's, just like this is just before, like this, this is something that will go, like, on a wall or like, um, you know, reproduce, sign it or something like that. And, like, maybe you want to get a letter press printed so anything like that, that is where all this process comes into handy and, you know, you could do a lot more with the, you know, just the decor of it. Um, fill in that a little bit more. Whatever. So just really, briefly, I'm just gonna tell you like what I mean by tracing cooper it, um let me back in. So this is something I'd want to take out a piece of my bristol paper. And this is I really love this paper is just bristol board just move surface, um I prefer to buy it in the size sheet nine nine by twelve because the bigger ones are harder to cut down and typically you're not like an eight by ten sort of situation so yeah so at this point I would take my pen and I think maybe I can squeeze that in going to do that um needy actually it's navy is kind of running out to take it out of my holder here hold it with my hand dario so sorry we're just kids like basically it um if I dip it in and I might not get it deep enough my butt if I tilt it I can get a better um and so that's just what I'm gonna do in this situation ideally I would tape this down so that doesn't shift around um always a better way to go but I'm just gonna try to not shift it but I am and move it over a little bit to the right here it's a soft centre at if no obstructions they'll help okay so here goes so basically no everything's traced out I can just sort of start wherever but for this I mean let's start and it's okay to stop and starts make sure you you know, keep the same line with and all that and then down strip there um so basically all I'm doing here is just taking the artwork that I've planned out and finalizing it this is not something that I would reproduce and some doing in blue ink and yes, it's perfectly fine to go back and fill in something. Um so you know it's don't worry if you run out of ink on a down stroke, it happens just go back in and just fill it in, but instead of actually using, like, more pressure just sort of like, use your nib to moving around, uh, fill in those lines, I think it's blogging said it makes it well enough, so please excuse that, um, it might be a little bit too viscous on top still or too watery so sketching and you had made, you know, on the down strokes you'd made the letters a little bit thicker in your sketch, it looks like you're not having to do too much of going back over because the down stroke with this name is actually kind of covering most of that exactly right? Yes. So that basically was sort of, like impersonating what mine it would dio um and yeah, it's just about the same with you know, I've gotten to know this name pretty well because, like I said before, it's my favorite it's my go to newt this don't wanna one and so I kind of, you know, I noticed capabilities and you know every new houses, different capabilities but this one is just like all right, I get these really nice down strokes you know, really broad and a really nice of strokes which this case actually do you have to sort of adjust the paper here and I stopped on that l because I didn't want tio finish it and then run my hand through it which would have happened so just going tio get that back in place again that's where the tape comes in hand comes in handy um you know any sort of table do like um that's not permanent, you know, like I wouldn't be scotch tape or anything like that but like, you know what? Masking tape artists tape washing tape, which I have a ton of so they're so super fast project right there, but that kind of gives you an idea of how to make this sort of sign it happens, so sketch it out first um, you know, the race is not just you need to just to plan ahead for your all of your scrollwork isn't ago if you decide to do that yes, so that that look over the l or that flourish over the elves or so I over the o in the v that's actually from the l I was sort of took it back around like that um so that's, that's, what the original piece ended up, as, you know, I just sort of just kept planning it out until I thought that it looked right. And then I traced over it nice. And then I scanned in and made it red. So that's, that that's just two very general projects. You know how you can just use your artwork or your calligraphy, putting it into artwork or envelope, you know, setting off birthday cards, or what have you so obviously you can have a lot of fun with that there's, a lot of fun to be had with color. Um, yeah, it's, just, uh, you guys can go out and be ableto just, you know, make a lot of fun projects. Thank you. Excellent, thank you so much.

The instructor provides some good examples of different ways you can address envelopes, with tips and tools to enhance your project. It would be useful if we could set the playback to a faster speed, since she can be a bit wordy :)

I'm trying to be patient as she gets through the list of class materials, but she seems very nervous and says, "Um," about 100 times! Fortunately, there is a PDF of the class supplies, so I will not have to listen to this part!
