File Compression
Does anybody know what the difference is between let's say away file and like an mp three file yes. What is the different digitally compressed okay, where is waves are un compressed ok? And what what what does that mean then like in like, you know, laymen's terms what would that then? The quality of a nun compressed file and be better. Good. Okay, the quality of the un compressed file would be there so the quality of the way foul would be better than the mp three. Yes. Ok, cool. And did you have something to add that you might be clipping transits on either end? Cool. So let me, uh, let me try and draw quickly away form here and, uh, d con you can confirm this right? That, um, you know, in addition to meet covering this here, that there's probably other courses that you guys have with creative live that talk very much about, like, some of these topics that we're talking about totally yeah, we have a bunch, of course, is in the catalogue that dive way into the the audio stuff between ed...
iting sweet. So we're going to talk. I mean, we're going to talk from the deejay perspective and kind of cover some of that stuff, but if you have a real interest in wanting to know way more about this definitely, like try and check that out on on the creative life site so let's say, this is our way form, right? So this is like the sound of the of the song here, and this is in its un compressed format let's say, right, so you've got, like, our high frequencies and are low frequencies so what's happening when we're compressing a file, is that it's? Well, so on really quick that the file for unemployed three is also going to be much smaller than the way file correct, right? So what's actually happening is that it's compressing the file to make it smaller in order for originally, this was intended to be able to then share music a lot easier to upload music without taking up as much storage space when, you know, space was much more of a premium. So, you know, usedto have, like, I mean, I remember the days of, like, napster and lime wire and stuff like that were like, you would then end up like, you know, you could share your library with other people out there, and they could download your music, and you could download their music. So in that sense, though, like, it was better to then have smaller files that you're just going to share, because it's going to take a lot less time costs a lot less and all of that now the only problem with that though is that the audio is getting compressed so what's happening really more than anything is we start with away file which is which is pretty big right um then we moved to an mp three and as the bit rate is smaller what's happening is this is what's happening so we're cutting off frequencies so what you're saying that the transient cutting off like the the high highs and the low lows are getting sort of clipped as a way of you still get in the meat you're still going in the meat of like the music but you're also missing a bit of the rich audio there yeah I was a dynamics of the difference between two awesome cool very good so yeah you're missing the dynamics eyes what you're missing so in terms of bit rate common bit rate numbers you'll hear are like three hundred twenty kilobytes per se this is for for mp three's three twenty is sort of the best that it can get as an mp three um on the low end um I mean the lowest I really have seen I think I've seen like forty something on the low side of it like forty seven or something like that but usually you know one twenty eight pretty much definitely on the lower side of it one sixty ah one ninety two to fifty six you know so uh if you can you want to be looking for like a three twenty but right now there's no way to get this back once it's compressed that's it that's it it's gone so you know no amount of like turning the volume up is going to get back the that dynamic um that's missing so better to get a wave converted to an mp three then like just get the mp three um and then better to have a high quality mp three converted lower if you wanted to like whatever send it somewhere or if you just wanted to compress it down sure um but better to have it as a bigger file first so what's, what size is your you said you could fit all your library that you use on a one hundred twenty eight gig thumb drive what compression right to you most of those air three twenty okay, yeah, most of those air three twenty I don't use a lot of way files when I play almost of stuff that I'm playing with is like high quality mp three three twenty um and uh yeah I mean, I do know guys though that only play wave files which I mean that's great because they're getting you're getting un compressed audio but that's also like that takes up quite a bit of of space, you know, and yeah, it just really depends it's all your preference but to me when I'm playing an mp three that's at three twenty kilobytes per second I don't feel like there's any like loss in terms of like what the audience is getting and the audio experience that's happening now if you will play a three twenty bit rate song and mix that into a one hundred sixty bit rate song, you will hear a difference for sure like you'll you'll hear that but without that context would be hard to sort of tell so just make sure that your mp three's that the places that you download make sure that you're you know I know some people out there I download from blog's as well like I know that sometimes your downloaded from different places try and make sure that you're downloading high quality files on and if it's a situation we're just like you can't find a higher quality file then that might just have to be the exception in your library but do your best to try and find the highest quality files that you possibly can cool is that help answer that question for electra is there any but other questions at this point in time that we've got no, I think we're good cool um all right we'll get back to itunes real quick I raided this five stars aiken right in genre if I want so let's um that's not play this really quick let's um let's john genre good music how about that? Okay so I can make up my own genres as well right? That might be a good way for you to sort also is by like maybe you create genres that are like um you know, hip hop rock for stuff that's like hip hop and rock fused together that kind of sounds like that or you know you call something sonny sunny electro which means something to you and so whatever you decide though like you know this is a great way of organizing your music also is by that ultimately like you can go as crazy as you want with some of this stuff I mean I know djs that I think I mentioned this yesterday I know djs that right in the year ah that the song was released they write in the label that was released on who produced the record I mean you can go full out the one thing that I would recommend that we did earlier was to make sure that you feel in that comment field for like the uh the sections like how the length of different sections so let's see this is itunes and then what I can do here let's take you go back into aa they go back into surat o d j real quick I have a whole bunch of stuff open so I'm gonna take I'm going to take a wave file that we recorded earlier I recorded the wedding announcement earlier we let that load up on and that is in this recorded folder just saw recorded and that was what I thought of that francine ok so this is a cool shortcut by the way you can see the bit rate here also because that's a column that we have in here you can change the com if you want so that fourteen that fourteen hundred kilobyte per second that's the real difference if you think about fourteen hundred kilobytes compared to three twenty so way versus mp three so I'm gonna take this file is a but you know I can ah a shortcut for how I can open this in a finder you may know the keyboard shortcut control right like that okay, yeah command are yeah um command are we'll pull it up and find her? This is exactly where it's at um cool and it's away file so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna open this up inside of itunes when you use itunes to convert this to an mp three so I don't know if any of you ever do that but itunes is great for that sort of thing I want to put it in here should be francine no maybe that didn't give a let me um do it this way I think the settings on here if I double click it it all playing nineteen's yep there it is. Cool s so here is my, um here's my track. Okay, this is a way file and actually think that there is so your name's eyes kind where's kind there it is kinda also tell you whether it's a waiver and mp three so mpeg that's an mp three kind wave you khun sort that way also confined your waves so this one is away file francine, we're going tio, turn this into an mp three. If I go to preferences, I just want to check our importing settings so import settings your default if you click on this and by the way, for those who are at home and you're in front of a computer, hopefully your informant came here because you watching the broadcast. But if you go to itunes really quick and double check your imports settings on itunes the default is an a a c encoder that's the default that's like an apple, an apple file type. So I'm going to change that to an mp three, though, because then I can convert things to an mp three and then they could be played on windows machines that can be played on anything it's, much more universal, so the default also will probably be something like this one ninety two so if you're gonna, like, import a cd like you were to take music that you had on a cd and you were to import it, the default settings would be to convert to an a a c and it would not be at a super high quality be at, like, one ninety two or one sixty or something like that. So I'm gonna make sure to change that doing I can change that by going to custom. And then I can make this three twenty the highest of it'll here's all of our different types of pit rates. So you get down to sixteen kilobytes per second. That must sound pretty terrible. Um, okay. So three. Twenty. All right. And I'm gonna select ok, and then that's now going to convert it. So when I if I want to convert this I'm gonna control, click or right, click on this and it now says create mp three version yes, go ahead. It now created that this now on the show and find her. This is now located here, though this is an unknown album. In fact, let me just do this. This is in users. This is david's computer users music, itunes, itunes media music, unknown artist, unknown album that's where this is living right now

This was a great class. I am an up and coming DJ. I have been teaching myself for the most part. This was the first actual class that I have taken and it was very good to know and hear that I have been teaching myself properly. It was good to hear that I am on the right path. I was also able to pick up some tips on what I can improve and change about how I proceed in my journey. Would like to have more classes like these. Thanks.
