Upbeat - Part 2: Bass - Arranging with Logic Pro 11's Session Players

I think right now we've got a good drum groove. Why don't we try adding a bass part? So let's go to new instrument and we're going to session player this time. We're going to bass player. So let's go to create. OK. So we have got the base loaded up here and you'll notice if you look up here there, it has inputted what it believes the cords are. Um So we've got here a CD minor, a minor, a minor. Um Let's listen to what the computer has generated for us and see how we feel about it. I want you to know, I love you. I know you feel it too. I am never going. Now, let you go. Our fire will always glow. OK? You may have listened to that and gone. There's something not quite right about that. I'm not quite sure. That's because the logic has tried to determine what those chords are from the electric piano part and it's gotten a bit wrong. So, um it's gone c and then, rather than f that, we want it gone for D minor and then it goes a minor which is correct. And then rather than a G which we have...

in the, the electric piano. It's gone for another, a minor. So it, it doesn't sound quite right. So we need to change those. So let's double click on the D minor like this and we can change the chord here. So we want to change it to an F major. So first let's change the root note, gonna go for an F and then we wanna make it a major chord. So we're gonna change that there. And that has now changed that for there. Uh We're also gonna need to change it on the repeat as well. So let's change that now. That's an E. So don't do that. Let's change it to an F major. There we go. And then we also need to change this fourth chord here to a G major. So let's change that now, change it here as well. There we go. Now, let's have a listen to that and see what it sounds like. I want you to of you. I know you feel it too. I am never going. I let you go. Our fire will always glow. OK. So we're getting closer. However, you may still be listening to it and going, there's something not quite right there. Um One thing that is different between the electric piano part and then what the logic has generated for us for the bass is that we, if you remember, we pushed the chords slightly. So this F major chord is coming in on beat four of bar one rather than um where you'd expect on beat one of bar two. So we need to change where those chords enter as well. So specifically the F chords, so we're gonna select that F chord and we are going to just drag it. There we go. We have dragged that slightly there and then we need to drag this a minor cord back and then we're gonna do exactly the same for the teenager. So let's change that. Now. There we go. Move that one back and we're gonna do the same for the repeat of it as well. There we go. Let's have a listen to it now and see if that's any better. I want you to, I love you. I know you feel it too. I am never, I let you go. Our fire will always glow. There we go. That for me is now sounding more how I want it to in terms of um the chords that are being played and then also the harmonic pulse. So when each chord is landing on which uh beat of the bar. So let's click on this here. Let's see if we want to try a different sound. So we've got a few different options. I'm gonna go to Disco Slap immediately. I want to try Disco slap. That makes me very excited. It's just loading it up. Now, takes a little while and let's have a listen to it. Now, I want you to, I love you. I know you feel it too. Never go. I let you go. Our fire will always glow. OK. That's doing some cool stuff, but potentially for a verse, it's a little bit too complex. So we are going to drop the complexity and drop the intensity as well and see what it comes up with. I want you to know. I love you. I know you feel it too of a I let you go will always blow with every maybe increase the intensity slightly. So we get a bit more, um a little bit more notes and also maybe complexity as well. I want you to know, I love you. I know you feel it too. Never go. I let you go. Our fire will always glow. OK? Now, when we get to this part of the window here, I'm gonna try it. So that in the verses we're not doing too many shifting of octaves. So we're just staying kind of in one pitch. So right now it's got octaves that some, I'm gonna put none and see how that changes what the bass player is playing. I want you to know. I love you. I know you feel it too. Never go. I let you go. Our fires will always glow. OK? I'm happy with that. I'm thinking when we then go into the chorus, we're gonna add in octaves and then it's gonna be even more impactful because we haven't had those in reverse. Let's try that. Now, in fact, let's do copy, select the region press copy. Then let's paste it in here when the chorus comes in. And we also need to paste in those cords as well. So let's copy that and paste those in. There we go. And then let's add some octaves and let's see what happens with low. There we go. So immediately we're getting a verse part which is slightly less complex and then we've got a uh a chorus part which is even more complex. I'm gonna up the intensity even more on this section. I'm gonna also increase complexity. Uh In fact, no. Do you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna see if I can uh change the pattern. So it's a bit busier. So let's try. Uh Number four looks like there's more, no more dots within it. Let's see how that happens, how that works. It's OK. Uh I'm gonna also increase the amount of fills. We've got maybe the complexity of them. Let's see how that sounds. A lot of this is trial and error. Just seeing what uh logic is giving you and seeing what you like and what you don't like and then tweaking it slightly. OK? I just want to listen to the bass and drums together because I think it's gonna sound quite cool. I'm quite happy with that. I think that's pretty cool.
