FreePreview: Setting Up A Session in Logic Pro

Okay guys so over the next few days will be doing them being recruited a few tracks going going through how I make my drums some basics offs emphasis on base programming and yeah, and so I'm just gonna play a pay a bit of a tune that I've been working recently with trump we're going to go over at some point, so I'll give you a quick millions of this in the way wait yes at some point I'm going to go through that how I made it mixed down the stuff I'm also going to re creating another tune, which I'm about to load up here you know, I'm using logic nine a lot of stuff can be translated tio logic, but you're ten I'm not using that year because of this center uses sixty four bit plug into the moment and not one of the plug is up to date yeah, some point I will be moving to ten but most of stuff is could be used in both s o this is the lover to mlle which are gonna be re creating from scratch for you guys give you a quick play first sigmund, I need to get the boring stuff out the way and tha...

t's how I set up set up my logic so I'm just gonna it's going quickness and open it from scratch that was awesome did great thanks so yes this's many for people who don't you know you don't know much totally obviously if you know a little bit you gonna lonesome you still got loads of stuff especially on day two so create new empty projects so when you first open logic this is uh this is what you see so first is going to ask me to create some new tracks so I'm going to increase and you'll go tracks up here I want him to be in stereo it's asked me the number of tracks I'm just gonna say like six create so there I have ah six audio tracks thiss button here let me create new tracks took on this and also create some software instrument tracks which is for plug ins and stuff the first ones for audio these ones of plug ins instruments so I'm going to create they say twenty four these create first I'm gonna change them stuff at the top here that this is all the stuff at the top is just wasting space really so that we need that so if I control click the top and they go hide toolbar so I don't need that also goingto hide this thing over here uh well it's going to our sittings which you do by command comma under audio he choose your audio device here I'm using the quartet we also have the out buffa size now this the low you have it the desolate and see there is, but the more pressure it puts on the computer so lonely when you're first starting in june you want this kind of lower as you're getting to mix in damage and you have this higher I'm gonna keep on two, five, six in a moment uh, yeah twenty four bit recording we only have twenty four books but recording for recording stuff uh, what we've got here, okay? So firsts that's super good to know. So whenever is that whenever you open a new project, you sort of set all the parameters first before you just diving because I think the tendency for people is just boom, you open it, you layer tracks out and you just start working yeah, without here what I'm doing, I'm creating create a setup that every time I open it is going to the same, so so then you don't have to do yeah then you then you can actually just start doing exactly what you're just getting all this out the way first because a lot of people I mean buses and stuff. For instance, when you first open it, the buses are not there and people create as they're making a track and you can get quite messy so I'd rather have a ll there straight away and as I'm creating a track everything's there for me and I can get on with being creative and not have to worry about totally you know doing all this stuff so get this stuff out the way now key commands keeping people at different key commands a lot of time I spend my time in logic uh zooming in and out you know moving around the arrangement I'm not sure what the default key commands after this but I I use control and in my arrows zoom in an hour if you need to change in the key commands you press alternate k and there's a list of order the key commands yes and zoom you can you can go to the search box up in the top here and type what you want and as you see here hope resume wasn't we're now is to control when there the arrows okay so another thing I like to do it stop he's um I'm going I'm going to uh pass control they're going to reassign factor now output copy list thiss one here copies the contract your arm I'm not gonna do I'm gonna make some little markers at the top here I like kick to get these men you up you can suppress escape if you want to write clear keep evil way get the pencil tall and I'm going to draw a little sixteen bar block off the top I'm going to rename it to nothing and we're going to do I'm gonna copy this for you know, eight minutesworth of work of track the reason I do this is no matter how because most arts music is based around sixteen bar blocks unanimous around zoomed in or out and I can instantly see a sixteen bar block at the top and classify neto acronym writing these labeled immuno intro drop whatever I need I'm going to college these color alternate and see get your color palette up she's whatever you want you know it's just as thick so I'm going to use a purple so there's uh there's business blocks at the top uh okay what we've got right screen sets now now that people use screens set so this is the main arrange page if you wantto go to the mixer you know you can click down here and get you mixed up or you can go up to the window go mix and it brings up a mix of window but what screen sir is squeeze controlled by the numbers at the top of the keyboard so screen set one is my range now I'm going to go to screen set to and it's just arrange but I'm going to make it a and makes the windows are going to go to click on mixer closed the arrange patient behind it make this full now this's screen set to his my mixer press one again it's my range page two mixer one arranged now could instantly to switch between different pages without having to click anywhere uh on screen set free I'm going to make this my my environment now what that is for for buses and stuff because at the moment the tracks on the mix of page all these tracks here we're in the same older that's what's going down on the arrange page but on free I'm going tio window environment that this lists all the tracks, the in logic with them in the background or what have you and this is where I make my buses so what's this window called here this is the environment it's environment went okay, so I mean a lot of people when they when they're making a tune, if they wanna, you know, send something to a bus, they're just making it just appear I prefer to do it first get out the way make it will make it would not need and what's the advantage of doing for people that don't maybe aren't using buses now I know that like that's sort of best practice right is he is buses yeah, I should explain bus is a little bit I mean they could be using in two ways first city if I have a group of a group of drums say, you know I've got a kick drama snare drum it sometimes it is nice to group them together onto one bus so it's like get a load of channels and input in food toe one channels enough control over the volume of all the drums are compote, plug ins and stuff over there all the drums or all the simpson on the second uses for effects so instead of putting in effect straight on the channel I couldn't put put in effect on a bus and you send you send different tracks talks end to a bus it's like the old school way of doing it and you had the mixing disc so instead of like putting a reverb on your high hat your snare your kick like seventies or whatever you just put it on one yeah I mean you can still do that if you want, you know still but in general it's just nice tio, you have more control if you have the river bin and delays in a separate bus. Okay, well, being in the general I mean, sometimes I might put a river on a certain channel it's very specific, but in general I prefer to stick by buses. Awesome. So if I go teo screen set free, which is my environment I'm going to create the orcs tracks we should've buses so appear new china channel strip auxiliary that creates it I'm gonna create about about ten of them so another one facility bear with me you have to do it one at a time you can't go there just I want ten no this is good anybody that didn't get it the first time yeah that's uh I knew right then the bottom channel strip auxiliary this ship I need my happened last of course of it hey ten years ten okay this's little button down here tells you a stereo or not and you could see if there's just one line here on one track when I click on this they become stereo tracks as you can see when I do this it's now too little worm two lines here so there and have a good thing it's always good to label detract seventy people don't label stuff and it's just you know it's hard to see what's going on is always good to label you tracks uh always have orcs one for my drums so get the textile down here say drums also you have tio this's the input to the auxiliary so everyone is going to be bus one it's gonna be to bust too so on and so forth because you can actually have this any way you want and I get a little project sent to me and I'll tell you one is bus for and it's just it's just a headache you know because if you just start creating randomly new range page is going to do it in some random way so get what is nice in the beginning is the best way for bus for five five so we were talking about that before we went live just how, um there are a few things like on the desk and just around and how psychologically when you're starting to work on a new piece of music how mentally it makes a difference to have like a clean studio space and it makes a difference to have all your tracks laid out all your ox is labeled yeah definitely you know makes the mindless clouds and in your more free to just, you know, be create even not yeah yeah it's a good thing to do ok cities normally my my lover talks in every sunday media buses on that we have for grouping things like drums and number free I'm going to use his eyes my base bus so you know, in a lot of tracks, especially dance of drone based music you know, we have more than one bass sound, you know, whether it's playing at the same time or whether it's playing at different times so it's nice to have that all grouped together on one talking to control the volume of all the bases in one go you know uh on the later ones I'd like to put my fix and stuff so bus nine, for instance are going toe so at the top here this is where you put your plug ins and these little sections here so busted nine for instance, I'm gonna put a delay delay I'm going to use tape delay. You can see there's a tape delay here. Ah here's the different timing of it. Maybe I should get a get a little sound up so you can see what the delays doing. We'll go back to screen set one instrument one so here is where you put put your plug into your soft seems to click on it you don't have to click and hold at first if we have to click and hold to be done you can just click once is open and you come down so I'm going to choose just choose the us too choose the sounds by this spirit of top here is only when you choose your sounds um base just anything today so you have to how to send up to the delay so let me go back to my environment as you can see on fox nine bust nine is my delay and we're going to do I'm gonna label it down here as well folks nine could delay or d o y for sure so now when I go back tio over here, here, my sins here and this is this is how you send something tio a bus on effect public here go to bus and as you know is now on nine it says delay because of labeled in the other page so I click on that now this here is how much I send to that delay so if it's all the way down that has been sent it turned up you could hear tonto they're also on this on this in the arrange page here the far lefts the track is always what's highlighted here but this one of the rights is dynamic. It changes depending what you do so but standard it it just goes to your master output if I come down here, if I click on just click on that it becomes becomes the bus quick on the output this becomes the main output that's a really nice touch the fact that this khun you know change or if I yeah so so I can also access to take today here is well, we'll go back to my screen set free the environment, access it here in the delay I could change the speed of it. If I cooked this one here it should be doubled the amount that one half the amount. Now I'm gonna call this one a dub delay and I do that because I moved this across here you don't have to be back here I'll get my head it ahead of myself, but I don't need to go too much into the delays, and I'm going to do a bit later. This is more just to set up, so I'm going I'm gonna have another delay here with a different speed uh, delay, take today there is another one, of course, being labeled this delay one also gonna get myself a river. Uh, wait, space designing thie the main best we've ever been in logic. Uh, it comes up with standards synthesized river, but you can choose here from different kinds of spaces, so I'd like to get a few re verbs up like a long one shorter, one time to start the longer one just randomly to something and large play vocal play again need to label that I'm gonna call that large askew go for a song you can you can you can change this to suit but it's good. Just get something they have to start with, uh, oak six and get another river. Make this one a smaller one small small plate drum plate a small bed. Label it down here. There we go that's all able to now back in here when I'm when I want to send this sound, for instance, when I was going to delay I can access it to reverb and now because of labeled it you can see there by six more their bus seven large burbey etcetera so quick on that turn that down and there was a turn me stop another quick tip as well is if I want to turn these on and off purpose all tonight and quick bipartisan and you can do that with any plug in a swell so to take the life into this itself all tonight click just bypass is it enough um okay says tony's off send send okay another thing I'd do is most dance music now is made to be very very loud you know and it's very squashed uh well that's a good figure no is ah a different story but a good thing I do with most starts music is his side changing um so changing the base so that when the kicks and snares come in the based ducks a little bit to give it more space and everything can be a bit loud over that being too distorted so what I do with that I'll use my last folks here's a side chain um it's a little bit complicated explain that there so I'm going to take this out of the take the southeast area bus or anything that gets sent to hear you want actually here it's just for control purposes now my base bus here I'm going to put a compressor way dynamics compressor on up here you see you've got a little thing asus side chain so put choose a bus ten so now this compressor be reacting to whatever's coming through this this last talks here okay I'm sorry okay so after more screen set so that a moment I've got one is my range to is my mixer free is my environments teo on seven flights have my audio been so window poor job in this is just they and he's any samples or any bits of all garrow anything goes in here and you can see all listed cisco have just set up in the background um way got chopped up to questions okay is now a good time yeah sure to questions josh wants to know does logic differentiate between mano buses and stereo buses like pro tools showed like that you could click mono or stereo right on that yeah I think I think in protocols if you I'm not sure I know used to be if you had stereo it would you have two separate tracks I think one for the left and one for the right okay where is logic it's it's just one stress one strip on you can tell of its stereo no here I mean this just distract here mr because you have to to bits on the meter I mean you can have more nobody's if you want but I mean you don't really need to even if you you know you might just keepem or stereo even if if everything going for is more no, it does this really make a difference you might be might keep your step for step. Yeah, ok and again that's done by this little button down here you can see the two circles represent states this stereo challenge philly phil wants to know this uh, question got two votes are you sending it pre or post fader for the effects it's normally is normally post fader okay, yeah, I mean, in certain situations, you might want tio pre fado what would be what would be a situation that you would want to do pre fader uh in rare situations where, for instance, with three space sounds I mean, I'll explain to people what pre and post is so s o s a delay, for instance no, they say the river for instance at the moment this is tony stop that's a post assad turn the volume down all comes down, including the the bus that sent to the reverb. Now if I had it on a pre which I think I do buy don't get pre oh, here we go post paid a pre faded now if I had on pre fader thiss is being sent to the reverb regardless of where the of where the track is now down in certain situations, you might want to do that as an effect, you know, you might want to think sound to be just just the river you might win. The ultimate is coming up sometimes there is an effect, you know, in general keep it a czar post and you could see the differences balloon if it's post if it's pre it says that green ok, yeah, put that back on on post. Another thing I like to do is well, my in my main setup is have one track azad piano sound just a straight away. This is a waste. You know, if you need to play, you've got amenity idea or something or actually checked shooting or something is always get usedto be always there, you know? So I'll go to my ear six twenty four, which is logic sampler. So the other thirty six twenty four this black but here is where you load your sounds. Click on it. I have my in one piano here. Click on that. I think you just have that just having their time, you know, just for for ideas, for, for tuning, you know, I've got a sample, something on a chick itude enough playing in here so I would always have that just just always there, you know? We got another good question ask a wants to know do you bother spending time calculating attack released speeds for the dynamics or effects based on song bpm or just do it by ear actually, you know many many do by you I mean, you can do what you said back in the day when we had hardware reeve, herbs and stuff you know, you have a little she and you could work out your preview eight times and stuff but you can do that if you want to you but in general are put to death by you you know yeah, another thing as well these the's the's air the buses boxes on the environment I can also make these appear in the arrange page I didn't realize you could do it first. Best that's quite helpful, especially for automation. Obviously if I want it all to make any of these tracks I could do so but also make something in this page it is no really obvious how you would do that. So why do I can create I can put I'll show you anyway I'm just gonna copy this this track here. Wait, what is of my runs? So I can, uh for pris control reassigned track mixer auxiliary and arkan choose or them the ox is for my range page and having appear so it for my environment and haven't had them appear on the arrange pager there we go there's my drum bus now at the top here so if I want to do any automation on the on the drum buses a whole it's there uh I could do the same for for the master output as well so they just copy that cancer so control click reassigned track mixer output stereo so now right on top of my master output top here as well if I want to do any automation in the master output stare on the arrange page you know and the same for ah same for any of these if these effects here the delay or anything you know can you do this again something a copy of this thing but in here is very useful with copies it doesn't duplicate or whatever is highlighted so this is piano track for instance if I press this year in our duplicates it and I can change it as I need to delete that so yeah I'm going to you because this is not put here control quick reassigned track mixer folks uh delay so for instance if I want it all may anything stay at the light now has its track in the arrange page um ok well see we got um ajax science um we got here yes let me talk through some of the different things in the instruments so as I sit down here these will up here or the logics internal the's stuff that comes with it with a plug ins the main thing I uses the six twenty four which is logic sampler you can choose one of steroid most of time eulogy stereo um yes, this is the six twenty four choose a sound kick here. Jesus sounds uh what else we have you have, like a the m which is a simple fm sin. So do all these come with magic? Yeah, these air the stock logic and they're really good, actually, I mean, I you know, the majority of stuff I used this stuff it's stuff that is actually from logic, you know, it's very easy these days to just downloads hundreds of but plug ins and you never really get to learn anything. You know, back in the day you have to save up for a bit of equipment, a bit of hardware and you'd learn that piece of equipment inside out, you know, think about it where's these days. It's easy just to get, you know, the latest feeling used, you know, the best presets woman and move on to something else. You never really learn anything because there's always something better around the corner, you know, so I think it's always good to get one piece of, you know, one thing kind of done it quite well, yeah I was just going to ask that so you would you would recommend actually diving deep and actually learn instead of just doing something quick but really understanding what you're doing yeah beginning yeah I mean even if it is a party plugging you know just just just concentrate on one you know if you kind of like it and you spend a long time now that everything in inside out and when you do that you find it easier to learn have something else works as well you know because a lot of things a very similar way have um yeah the s one is a simple simple simple used in the again most most of the sounds are done by the top up here and then you have ah you have groups of sounds of simply and you have these simply xyz in pads since base such exception uh yes too it is a very good super then use it quite as much now but when I first got logic is one of the things that I spent a lot of time a lot of time learning that's very powerful people tend to overlook because it's like I was just to see if that's included in logic you know it's actually really good really good soon okay for some of the sounds are made from the past thanks e a lot of variations on the same team yeah, well e b e freeze the organ you know, if you want all the sounds is quite good. We have a club. I think he's very often every night, and that gets used. Yeah, but my main thing is, is the is the sampler? Um, yeah.

This is a great course which covers basics as well as more advanced techniques, and the insight into Ed's workflow is very useful.

Picked up a lot of good information from this class. Ed is very knowledgeable, and takes us through the technique and the thought process of sound production, composition, mixing, and mastering. Towards the end of the course, at times it felt a little disjointed, as the segments switched between different tracks; but the information provided was good, once I got oriented. Would definitely recommend this course.
