DEMO:How to Get your Podcast on iTunes

You've uploaded your episodes and you're ready to grab your RSS feed. Now I know those of you who are watching live haven't done this yet so you can come back to the recording and watch me walk through this so you can do it. I'm gonna show you how to get your show on iTunes. How exactly to walk through the steps. Go over to my computer. And so awesome. This link, where I am right now is podcastconnect.apple.com. It's linked in the resource guide that you get when you register. So you can click right on this. The pages you guys didn't see 'cause I did it ahead of time, is I logged into my Apple account. You have to have an apple id in order to put your podcast on Apple. So if for some reason you don't have an iTunes account, you don't have an Apple account, you're gonna be prompted to create one. So create one, log in and then right here this plus button. So what you're seeing here on this page is my podcast that I already have. So that Handmade podcast is one I did with my friend. And ...

Essential Enthusiasm is the most recent one. Explore Your Enthusiasm is the thing I've been doing for years. You see there's a big plus button here. I'm gonna click it. And I'm gonna paste that RSS feed right here. I got this feed from my host. So my host has a page that tells me what this feed is. You then click validate. You see validate right there. Okay now I'm getting an error button or an error because I've already submitted this podcast. Right this is my podcast. But I wanted to submit my podcast and not a fake one to show you this is what you'll see. So you'll have your real podcast feed. And a status will probably say valid. And then go away. Okay then your image that you've added to your host. Your description that you've added to your host. The title, the categories, the language, the website you've put in on your host. This will all show up automatically in this stage. That's where all this data is coming from. The thing we just did on your host. Yeah it's all there! Now because I have many episodes, they're starting to list down here. If you have two or three episodes uploaded before you do this you'll see them down here. That's how you'll know it's working. Okay that's as easy as it is. After you hit validate it'll say it was valid and then you can hit submit. So when I made my most recent podcast I actually had the problem that it-- I had an error, something in the way I typed up the RSS feed or in the details I had in. So it said it can't validate my feed and then it gave me a little red dot next to the thing that was wrong. So then I just had to go into my host, correct that, come back hit validate again. Once it's validated, you hit the submit button. And it will say "You're podcast has been submitted to iTunes. We will review it." And they email you that you've been approved. So whatever your email address is that's attached to your Apple account is where you're gonna get that email that you've been approved. They say it takes anywhere from 24 hours to a week. In my experience it takes, depending on when you do it and how many other people have decided to start a podcast that day, it can take anywhere from a day to three days. So we're gonna talk about how to launch your podcast a little bit later today. But that's one thing to keep in mind that it's not gonna immediately go live everywhere. And when it does go live you want people to know about it. You want to be prepared to tell people about it. So that's how easy it is to get your show on iTunes. It's not, it's pasting a link and then hitting validate and then hitting submit. Hey you know how you said you only have to do the host thing one time? Mm hmm. And then it's there forever, whatever. How do you do individual? Okay so I recorded one episode. I've put it up 'cause I have the RSS. Yes. Now it's the next week and I'm like oh I don't have to do all the steps. Right. So what's the one thing you have to do to get that RSS feed of the new episode to put up? That's awesome. You just add the new episode to your host. So you don't have to go through this and submit it again to iTunes. It'll happen automatically. So what you do in Squarespace is you create a new blog post with a new audio block. Mm hmm. Post it. When it goes live on the internet. It sends that feed. It sends an update to that feed. And those feeds are updated every 24 hours or so. I think it's way more often but that's what Apple tells you. So if mine went live this morning, it will show up on everybody's iTunes sometime today. So when did you hit submit or publish that blog post? So what I did 'cause it's not through Squarespace. On Libsyn, I had Auphonics, send it directly to Libsyn. I went into Libsyn and I scheduled it for like 6:00 am this morning. Okay. So I did that. Well we're a little behind because of getting ready to come here. So I did that on Friday then I scheduled it for Wednesday. What I typically try to do is by last Wednesday or Thursday have it scheduled. And we have next week's scheduled for next Wednesday. Okay. So as soon as I send it through I then go in and I schedule it. So on Squarespace you can go in, if you record an episode today you want live next week I would go in and create it all today. Put your audio block is what it's called in Squarespace. Schedule that post for next week. On Squarespace as soon as your post goes live it gets sent to iTunes. And then iTunes is like okay. Oh so you don't have to go into iTunes every time and do that. You never have to go into iTunes again. Oh. It's actually an email saying it went live every time. No. Oh okay. Good question. You get an email from iTunes saying your podcast has been approved. Ahhh. Each episode then just goes through. So each podcast episode does not have to get individually approved. No can you imagine? No I couldn't. That's why I was a little stumped. Like who's listening or reading all these descriptions? Yeah no that's perfect. Yeah that's why I'm confused about that there's people somewhere approving everybody's podcast. What they're looking for is it being like scummy or questionable or cursing. But ours, that's why mine happened always within 24 hours because I think they're like crafts and arts and essentials oils, no problem. And what if it does have the cursing E by it? It might take longer, I'm not sure. Okay do you have to choose that? Yes. Or is that something that? Yes that's another great episode. In your description of your podcast you can choose explicit or adult only might be a choice. And then in your individual episodes. Each host works a little different. But when you upload it to that, you upload your post. Like in Squarespace your audio block. There's a place to describe that episode. You can click explicit or not for each episode. So you know. Not that I'm planning on explicit but I just was curious. If something happens and you drop your mug in the middle of recording and you want to mark it explicit you absolutely can. Okay. So yeah so that's actually great. So everybody knows you are uploading it to iTunes that one time. They're approving it. Every time after that it magically happens. Gotcha. You keep sending your episodes there, they'll keep going live. And you do have the choices of scheduling them. So you can schedule them ahead of time.

I design embroidery patterns and I love podcasts but I wasn't sure what I would talk about in my own podcast without being able to show pictures. After watching this course I already have 20+ ideas for podcast topics, plus I now know how to get a podcast up and running, step-by-step, AND how it fits with my business goals. Tara Swiger is an excellent teacher and coach. I filled page after page with notes!
