Introduction to the Lightroom Ecosystem
1 Now, before we really get started, 2 I need to introduce those of you 3 who don't know the Lightroom ecosystem, 4 I need you to understand what it is. 5 The Lightroom ecosystem is a group of companion programs 6 that are very similar, but they do things differently, 7 and they do them in different places. 8 So there's Lightroom Classic. 9 We're looking at Lightroom Classic right here 10 inside of the computer right now. 11 You can identify Lightroom Classic 12 because it's got that look of light, 13 Lightroom has a look on the left hand side, 14 there's folders on the left hand side, 15 and then there's all sorts of collections. 16 And then in the middle, there's a grid. 17 And on the right, there's all of the adjustments. 18 And then at the top there is a series of different modules, 19 library, develop, map, book, slideshow, print. 20 If you see this, we are inside of Lightroom Classic. 21 And most people understand 22 and have used Lightroom Classic before. 23 So I just want you...
to see the different types 24 of Lightroom we're gonna be working in so that you're aware 25 of where we are when we're there. 26 And I'll call them out so that you understand. 27 But Lightroom Classic is basically a tool 28 that is disc based. 29 So all of your photos remain on a disc, 30 and then those images are churned through Lightroom, 31 and you can edit them, and you can adjust them, 32 and you can organize them, 33 but it doesn't connect itself to the cloud 34 until you ask it to. 35 So you can share those images with the cloud if you'd like, 36 but you don't necessarily need to. 37 But it is the workhorse. 38 It's where most professional photographers do their work 39 because they have to churn through a lot of images. 40 Now, the next program that we'll be showing you 41 is Lightroom Desktop, 42 which is the newest version of Lightroom. 43 It's kind of a streamlined version of Lightroom. 44 It is, it doesn't have all the modules 45 up in the top right hand corner here. 46 You'll notice that on the left hand side, 47 instead of collections, it has what's called albums. 48 And there's no folder area listed up here. 49 It's just albums. 50 It kind of sorts things in a different way. 51 But it is kind of cloud driven. 52 So when you put your images into Lightroom Desktop, 53 it wants to put them on the cloud, 54 it wants to deliver the entire high resolution image 55 to the cloud, 56 and then it shares it with all 57 of the other different versions of Lightroom. 58 So Lightroom Desktop is a little bit different 59 than Lightroom Classic, but it kind of has the same feel. 60 If you look on the left hand side, it's got the albums, 61 and then on the middle, 62 it's a grid of images similar to Lightroom Classic. 63 And on the right hand side are all the tools, 64 but they're kind of minimized 65 and they're small until you actually start working on one. 66 So when you double click an image, you can click on, 67 say, the adjustment area, which is right here. 68 You can see that edit button right here. 69 And if I click on it, it's gonna open it up. 70 And you can see that I've got all the tools over here. 71 So I've got my basic exposures. 72 It's a little bit different than what you see 73 inside of Lightroom Classic, 74 but all the tools are still there. 75 So tools are exactly the same. 76 It's just a difference in the way they lay it out. 77 It's a little bit streamlined, it's a little simpler. 78 This is Lightroom Desktop. 79 And we'll work inside of Lightroom Desktop 80 as well throughout this workshop. 81 Now, we're not gonna go through every tool in each version 82 of Lightroom either. 83 What I'm going to do is I'm gonna call them out, 84 show you where they are in the one, 85 and if there's a supreme difference, 86 then we'll go to a different version of Lightroom 87 to show you the difference on that particular situation, 88 that particular tool. 89 Some of the tools are a little bit easier to use 90 in one version of Lightroom or the other. 91 Some of the tools are just more fun to use 92 in one version or the other. 93 And so we'll just kind of hop around between 'em. 94 But note that all of the versions of Lightroom 95 pretty much have the same power, the same tools, 96 they're just a little bit different in different places, 97 that kind of thing. 98 There are a couple notable exceptions 99 that I'll tell you about. 100 When one of the tools doesn't exist 101 in one of the versions of Lightroom. 102 Usually that's on your phone or on the iPad, 103 maybe there's not enough horsepower 104 to run a certain AI tool, 105 so they don't have it there yet. 106 But probably someday in the future they will, 107 just have to wait for the horsepower. 108 Okay, so this is Lightroom Desktop. 109 If it looks like this, 110 then it's going to be Lightroom Desktop. 111 And our third version is our iPad. 112 And so here's the iPad. 113 You can see that I've got Lightroom right here as well. 114 And I can flip through my images just like I could 115 in Lightroom Classic or inside of Lightroom Desktop. 116 But you'll notice this one looks a lot 117 like Lightroom desktop. 118 So it's got the albums over on this side, 119 in the middle it's got the grid, 120 and then when you click on an image, 121 you've got all of your tools over here 122 on the right hand side. 123 This one also, if you put your images into it, 124 it wants to share 'em with the cloud. 125 And then from the cloud, it delivers 'em to all 126 of the other versions of Lightroom. 127 So all of these versions of Lightroom 128 want to share themselves with each other, 129 which is a brilliant thing. 130 It's an awesome thing. 131 We have other workshops that you can watch 132 on the connectivity, 133 how to use all of these versions of Lightroom together, 134 how to organize, how to share, 135 how to work on your images, 136 how to find images inside of the Lightroom ecosystem. 137 So that's not what this workshop is about. 138 I'm just introducing you to all the different versions 139 of Lightroom here inside of this little lesson 140 so that you are aware of where we are when we're there. 141 Okay. 142 And the last version of Lightroom 143 that we're gonna go to is inside of our browser. 144 So now, if you go to Google Chrome 145 and you type in lightroom.adobe.com 146 and sign into your account, 147 you will have this version of Lightroom, which is again, 148 on the left hand side you see the albums, 149 in the middle you see a grid. 150 If I happen to click on an image, 151 you can see over on the right hand side, 152 I have all of my tools. 153 Again, same tools that I had before. 154 If I click on one of them, 155 now I'm gonna see the original image and a bunch of tools. 156 Now, this is a raw image that's up in the cloud, 157 and it has all of the same tools that Lightroom has inside 158 of Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, Lightroom Mobile, 159 but it's tools on the cloud. 160 So there's a raw processor on the cloud. 161 So there are times when we will go to the cloud 162 to work on our images or to find our images, 163 or do something, 164 and there's some tools in the cloud that are also AI. 165 So everywhere you go inside of the Lightroom ecosystem, 166 there are going to be tools that are intelligently driven 167 by AI or artificial intelligence. 168 So we've got Lightroom on the web, 169 we've got Lightroom in the new version of Lightroom, 170 we've got Lightroom Desktop, 171 and we've got Lightroom Classic, 172 and we have Lightroom Mobile on our iPad, 173 or on our phone. 174 So we will be working on all of those 175 throughout this workshop, as well as Photoshop, 176 as well as a few other programs. 177 And I'll introduce you to those as we get into 'em 178 and as we have a need for them. 179 So that's an introduction to the Lightroom ecosystem, 180 and I give you that introduction so that you are aware 181 of where we are when we're there, 182 and I'll call them out for you 183 so that you know exactly where we are. 184 But I'm not going 185 to be showing you every single tool 186 in every version of Lightroom. 187 That's not what we're doing here. 188 I'm going to be showing you each tool, 189 and I need you to understand that it's available 190 in all of the versions of Lightroom 191 unless I tell you it isn't. 192 And so I will show you the differences 193 between certain versions of Lightroom, 194 but mostly I'll stay inside of Lightroom Classic 195 or maybe Lightroom Desktop, 196 and I'll introduce you to these tools 197 and then where it's appropriate, 198 or where there's a significant difference, 199 then I'll go to those tools and show them to you. 200 We're also going to be working in Photoshop a little bit. 201 We also will be going to a few external programs 202 and services as examples of plugin AI services. 203 But mostly we'll be inside of Lightroom 204 and the Lightroom ecosystem. 205 All right, with that introduction, it's time to get started. 206 So let's go.

Wow! Great class with lots of helpful information. More than I expected. Some of Jared's information will be particularly helpful to photographers shooting lots of pictures at events like weddings but there's plenty of AI tips for anyone wanting to delve a little deeper.
