Menu Functions Overview
We're gonna get started on the menu functions of this camera. This is where you wanna download and print out your PDF of the entire menu section. We'll be going through it on the back of the camera but I always like to be able to scan and see everything on there. This is part of the class and on the first page, I'm gonna have my recommendations, and I'm gonna go through them, and we'll talk about them here in a moment. But I know that you're gonna wanna adjust your camera so I have a second page that is blank on the recommendation so you can write in where you wanna put them for different types of situations. There's a couple of other pages in the back that we'll deal with when we get towards the end of the class, but for going through this section of the class this is handy, because the features in the menu of the camera can be roughly grouped into a few different categories. The first group, the biggest of these is things that you don't need to be concerned about. There's a lot of th...
ings in here that most people just don't need to adjust or tweak with at all. On those other ones that you're gonna wanna tweak and you're gonna wanna say, oh, I wanna set it here, and you'll set it and it's one and done. You're gonna set it once, and then you're completely done with it. And then the third type which is maybe the most important ones that you should circle or highlight or put a star by, are ones that you're gonna wanna come back to on a regular basis and adjust for different types of photography you're going to do. And so that could be helpful. I've gotten mine out, let's go ahead and get started. So obviously you need to hit the menu button in order to get into the menu, and you will notice that there are a number of tabs where items are grouped into pretty logic categories. Overall, I would say that Nikon has done a pretty good job at keeping things in the right spot on this. Now something to be aware of is the scroll bar. So Nikon has some different tabs but they can be very lengthy. And so you will need to use the multi-controller to move up and down to navigate up and down through the menu system. Now when you wanna get into a particular feature, what you'll do is you'll generally go to the right. Sometimes you can press the okay button but generally to the right gets you into a menu and going to the left will get you out of a menu. 'Cause you'll need to go up and down through the tabs and then you'll go right to get into that menu. And then you go up and down and then you go right again to dive deeper into that particular part of the menu. And at any time, you are looking for a little bit more information, you can try the help button, which will bring up a little bit of a contextual menu, not menu but information that tells you a little bit more about what that particular feature is doing. And that might help you figure out if you have forgotten what its particular feature that it's doing.

Great course to help an amateur get familiar with this camera. As a first time DSLR owner, and new to photography in general, there are settings and abilities of this camera that I find to be intimidating at times because they are over my head as a newbie. John explained settings and buttons in a way that cleared up some confusion left from reading the camera manual. I highly recommend this class to every owner of a D3400! John is a great instructor and I look forward to watching more videos of his.

I just purchased my first DSLR which is a Nikon D3500. There are few changes from the 3400 and this class has helped me tremendously with the transition from point and shoot and phone cameras. I am planning two once in a lifetime trips coming up and along with John's other courses on here I hope to be ready to capture some great memories. Would highly recommend his classes as he is a great teacher. I have tried other courses online and this and his Beginning 3 hour course so far have been the most helpful. Look forward to diving into his Fundamentals class.
