Class Introduction
What are we covering today? What is this course? You can see here, "Leadership Skills For New Managers," and a little subheader, "or the greatest hits of being a manager." Now, one thing that's going to be really important today is that we're gonna be covering a lot. So, if you are in this course, or online watching, you're going to get sort of a survey in this course of what it's gonna take to move from individual contributor to manager. So this is great for you if you're thinking about coming a manager, or if you just became a manager, or you've been managing for a while. If you've been managing for a while, this should be sort of a rejuvenating course, where you kind of get to think about, okay, where have I been strong and where do I need to grow? Alright. So it'll be a lot to cover. I may talk fast at times; but research shows that you can actually listen to your podcasts at 1.5 times or two times and still retain all the information. So if you think I'm talking fast, it's probabl...
y okay. You're gonna get it in your brain, it'll be great. So, what we're gonna actually cover... I'm gonna get into the agenda in a minute. But first, I just wanted to cover what I want to give today. So by the end of this course, what will you get? What will you get? First thing is, I want to make sure you get a warm welcome to the game of being a leader and a manager. So, being a leader is a little bit more of an expanded identity than just being a manager, okay? But, there's sort of like a game that you play in management or leadership; and it's sort of like, let's get connected to what the game is. Alright, so it's sort of a warm welcome. "Here's the game that's being played." Sometimes it can feel a little bit overwhelming at first, not knowing exactly what I need to do, what I'm doing well, maybe what I'm not doing well. What are other people, that have been doing this a long time doing, that I'm not doing? So we're gonna have that warm welcome today, to that, and hopefully invite you in; or if you've been in, then expand your sort of knowledge in the rooms in the house. So, I also want to help you have a cultivated intention of who you are as a leader. One of the most important things that I see people have struggle with is, not having a clear idea of what they're aiming at in terms of how they want to be. Right, so they sort of understand there's like, these sort of responsibilities that I have, I'm getting reviewed on these things, but like, who do I want to be? What am I aiming towards? So, we're gonna work on that, and give you an intention that you can have cultivated, and then really be clear and aim at as you go forward. And, to remember that this, what we're covering, you're about to see it on the agenda slide, all the stuff we're gonna get into. To have an improvement mindset of gradual improvement. Gradual improvement with practice. Because there's too much to learn about being a great leader or manager, it's fractal. As you zoom in on one area, there's just more and more detail, and as you zoom in again, there's more and more detail. So, it's gonna take us actually practicing, and investing ourselves over time. So, if we have that mindset and we understand maybe where we wanna go, going forward, that's gonna really help us. Okay, so that's what I wanna give you today. And what I'll say overall, what I'm gonna try to bring, and what I'd like you all to bring, is a sense of being a Daoist. What that really means to me is, finding the balance point. We're gonna sort of talk about like, where the edges are. What you can do over here, what you can do over there, and then it's up to us as leaders to integrate, and understand, how do I want to bring these skills or these mindsets to bare in the moment, right now? And, how do I want to do that in the future? So, having that sense of walking that center path, right? Yin and Yang is about balance. We have two sides, and there's sort of that center cut that goes down the middle. That's what I want you to think about, is walking that path with me today. Okay. So here's what we're covering today. Alright. So for you online, if you actually stay with us, here's what you're gonna get. First we're gonna start with management mindset. Okay? What's the mindset of a manager that's gonna lead us to success, and hopefully, also more enjoyment of the process. Because it's a lot of work to be a leader, a lot of work to be a manager. Second is, we're gonna talk about authentic leadership and vulnerability. That's a big buzz word, "authenticity." Right? We talk about authenticity a lot. How many of you have heard about authenticity at some point in the last year? Yeah? Okay, everyone in the room. What does it actually mean though? It's kind of a buzzword, so we're gonna break that down and give you a personal sense of what authenticity means. We're also gonna talk about vulnerability, because it takes vulnerability to really be as impactful as you can be. We're also gonna talk about "mindfulness," big buzz word. Alright? Another big buzz word. And emotional intelligence. So how do I actually... and that's gonna help us to actually figure out how to do it moment to moment, these things that we are sort of setting as intention. We're gonna talk about setting expectations and boundaries as a leader; this one's huge. This is sort of like blocking and tackling, the basics, like where we have a lot of friction points as leaders. We're talking about one-on-ones, so when we actually get time with the people that we're working with, how do we use that time? Okay? And the last is influencing. I think everyone in this room, including myself, would like to be better at influencing. Right? So, we're gonna cover some of the basics that are gonna help you take your influencing to the next level, being more intentional with that. So, as we go through this course, what we're gonna end up doing, is we're gonna give you a really comfortable sense of the breadth that's needed as a manager, or as a leader actually, more generally. And, be able to then figure out, what do I want to do, going forward, to shift how I'm behaving? So, you have habits, right? We go in loops. We go in loops over and over again, we have our habits. So you're doing the same thing, and you're getting a certain outcome. Today, the goal is for us to survey and find: okay, where am I strong, do I want to do more of that? And where do I maybe want to spend a little time and energy to shift my loop? Right? Change it, and hopefully get a different outcome, that's the goal. So let's start with a quick pledge of participation today, and people online, I'm gonna make you do this as well. So I just want you to raise your right hand, and say after me: "I promise to have fun..." I promise to have fun... "And not be perfect..." And not be perfect... "And be extra super rad today." And be extra super rad today. That's great. And so if you're watching online too, what I really ask for you is please, please, follow along with the exercises we're doing. Because the way we're gonna work through today is not just me talking; you learn by doing. So I'm gonna set up things, give you context, give you ideas, frameworks, and then it's up to you to actually apply it to yourself. So if you're at home and you're watching, and then you don't actually follow along with us, you're gonna get a lot less out of it. So I'm gonna go quickly, this was sort of like the setup, and then we're gonna launch right into it.
