Editing Video in Photoshop Part 1

I'm going to start with video and photo shop but I'm going to continue on to the next action as well okay lots of wires lots of wires ok all right so I'm gonna show you sit over her shoulder like I normally do for the fun of it of watching all right and so I am editing on his computer so if I get like confused she was anything crazy set up here right so I'm gonna show you what I edited in photo shop last night this one okay at this and then I think you have to make this full screen and here's helper hand corner on the video okay perfect okay so this is what I came up with everything every effect every coloration all the grave ing which means just like contrast in color then a photo shop all the transitions all these everything on the song is courtesy triple scoop music so this will have audio wait so I think that looks like you could do a lot in photoshopped personally and it's much more intuitive to me the way that I would call her a photo it would be the same thing I don't have to le...

arn anything new it's pretty much an extension of what you already know so I guess I'm going teo get started and just explain the basics of video and photo shop and then we'll continue a little bit more onward and I'm they're goingto post a link to that in the chat rooms because I gave it to kathy so she should have that I put things so why do you keep this really small like blind compared to you here okay I know he's good I say all right so um to edit video and photo shop you need tohave cs for extended see us five extended see a six or a photo shop cc so one of those okay I want to take a second to explain how creative cloud works just in case you're like what is this they're talking about c c I don't know what this is so dope we came up with the concepts that instead of just buying outright you by photo shop instead of you basically subscribe to photo shop or you subscribe to what adobes creating so what that means is I don't have to go ahead and buy a new version every time it comes out I'm paying for a monthly subscription and they don't just say new version it's constantly updating and so they're always introducing new things by on the cloud it doesn't mean that it's up in internet land somewhere it just means you can update all the time and you're always accessing new features so one of the things I would recommend is if you are a photographer interested in video probably creative cloud is a good idea so there's two versions of creative cloud from us photographers there's one that includes it's it's a lesser price includes monthly photoshopped in late room and just made for photographers but what's really intended for is when you pay the one monthly price you get every single adobe product that they make all of it which means if you pay that monthly price you get a photo shop you get premier you get a program for editing like audition editing your odd audio which saved me last night we'll discuss that a little later so you get a program for audio another program which I'm not going to get into but I did want to let you know um I would say one of the most frustrating part for me is going through my clips remembering and figure out what the heck I like because like you watch it once and then you're stressed out and I can't remember which which clip it wass and then like how far in and that you can t just devour your life going through clips so actually adobe has a program for that it's called adobe prelude and so what prelude allows you to do is you in just the pieces and you can tag what you like use metadata right comments and so what a lot of directors and photographers as well we'll do is we'll use that kind of like their light room more or less you can rate things you consort things on and another thing they'll do is if you are editing yourself what you could do is you could go through pick out your favorite clips what you like and then send that prelude project off to your editor so that you don't feel like you're just giving them total control you're letting them know these are the clips that I need to use the ones that I want I just don't wanna have to do the editing part so take a look at that think of it as kind of like light room but for video late room does video but it does not really it doesn't really doesn't have all the you can basically do some metadata but it doesn't have all the tagging of ways to say in points and out points and being able to keyword in the same way all right so keep those in mind probably for photographers that are getting a little more advanced you would want creative cloud if not here's how to do it in photo shop I'm excited to say actually if he doesn't do it this in photo shop so that's why I'm sitting here learning with you guys I'm watching you totally serious okay all right so what you want to do is you're going to actually just open up a video file the video file that you select whatever it's settings are meaning like frames per second or resolution whatever file you open up first establishes the settings for the whole project so if you open up something that was sixty frames per second and therefore shot with seven twenty your whole project will be seven twenty so what you want to do is you want to pick a file that represents a majority of what you're doing or what you plan on doing for the project so it's just the file open let me navigate to this timeline oh it's yeah that's your duty every serious lex perfect ok s o I actually save some clips out att this point prelude and photo shop aren't friends more premiere and prelude a friend so I was just doing this by hand writing down the clips that I liked so I'm going to go in here and I'm gonna pick out a file yeah in the beginning before I completely understood I shot tour document you tour documentation with like a g twelve my seventy my sixty and I'm alone not paying any attention to settings frame rates are matching that all up and so now that I'm trying to put together a promo pieces I've made it I've made a mess so is there a solution to there's visit there yes and no answer to that so so if you shot in a way where you've got like some seven twenty and whatnot if you open up with something shot it's a seven twenty everything that's bigger you will see the bounding boxes that extend beyond the campus the same way if you drag and drop a photo on top of another one is bigger and so what you could do is you basically go to the smallest common denominator and you resize it and so then it's actually good because it can give you more flexibility with the clips that you shot ah higher resolution if you know that you're going on to a lower resolution for web you could maybe up size stuff if you wanted to but you're probably better downsizing and they're actually are like much better solutions and premier photoshopped you don't really have it it's kind of this like you said it and you work with it so it depends on kind of how good your final output needs to look all right so I'm just going to select I was going to pick this clip for example so I'm going to hit open and so what it does is it brings in that cliff and I have to places where I work on my video so you guys may be familiar with the layers palette right the all the time each clip shows up as a separate layer and then you have the time line down here so you can tell that he hasn't edited in this because I'm like giving me those props you know I'm not lying I've never done this before so I'm washing with you guys I'll probably have questions myself okay excellent we'll see it's challenging me now okay what program is this again I'm just joking totally just like that bad all right so then we have our clip down there so I just basically establish my settings all right so when you have a clip you can grab this thing we call you you called the play head more or less you can drag it across to view the clip or you can get your space bar which will play the clip I'll play it across okay and so he's had from moving there all right so if you know in this piece you on ly like part of it just a little part of the entire piece you wanted to trim it like make it shorter right well how it works in photoshopped to trim something you actually grab the edges so on the left hand side if I want to cut off that entire beginning part up to here I grabbed the front and it will show me what I'm cutting off and it'll snap to place at that play head the same thing for the end if I go and I say well I don't really want to I want to stop there you would do the same thing and you could drag it over see I can't really see quite what I'm doing like you can't quit see where it's lining up um down here you have basically a thumbnail slider that you have in light room where you can see your thumbnails larger so I can zoom in and you can see it's giving you frame numbers here so before we had like twenty four frames per second like telling you how many frames that you have few zoom out it gives it to you more in minutes and second so right there we have like a twelve second clip all right so what does zoom in and so now when I was trying to drag that over to cut off the end they couldn't see where to do it now that I've zoomed in it's changed the scale and it's easy so I can quickly drag that over and re size all right so we've got that far basically we can re sign something and we can import the visuals that well that's a good starting point but what do you do if you wantto add more it's not the same way as you open it which is wakeful in that confused me what you'll do is whenever you're adding video it adds it to something called a video group so every single clip shows up is a lair I treat video groups almost like I think of layers and photo shop so I could put another group on top in like overlay them for example so I'm going to go here in the video group and I just want to add more clips to the same timeline here I don't want I don't want anything over latest want more clips so if you click where you see it looks like a little film strip I'm going to add media so I'm adding media in this case I am adding video clips and so I can add whatever I want I know I want like uh this clip I'm just gonna click on some random ones I'm holding the command key so whichever ones I click it selecting them I cannot import them all at once when I import all of these open what it does is ill and to the end and it will bring them over okay so it might be slightly a little bit of a pain to have to zoom out and then like click and drag and move these around right try and move them around the place what's really nice that photo shop does for you is it fits it and snaps it in so when I'm relocating this picture of her eye the video of her eye for example this is the clip here all right when I'm relocating that I click drag it where I want and let go it doesn't cut into the first clip and it doesn't cut into the end cliff the reason I love this is I learned on final cut pro and it would premier does the same thing so it's that's why I'm like I'm looking at that it looks a lot easier is definitely yeah because that used to get me and like I said if you search you can actually find like my college project ryland final cut it is horrible but doing a very simple edit it took me weeks and weeks and weeks because I would I would drop something it would cut off and then I wouldn't realize it so much later on and it was gone and then I couldn't drag it back and I'd have to move that that was a very long long project that's not something short there was elation today we're gonna teach you how to keep it simple yeah it was six minutes a six minute video piece we'd like narrative and all that stuff was really bad okay so that I love about you doing this in photoshopped it knows that we want to keep it simple all right so the next thing though is if you watch can you want over on the right hand side and the layers when I say drag this clip for here it reap orders the layers so those layers are actually representing the clips chronologically so the first clip is on the bottom and then the last clip that you would play is on the top what's good is over here you have that the file names you could actually if you wanted to rename them for reference you know which clips or which um something that I want to address is saving we're talking about saving and backing up when you say of this file what I thought originally would be what happens when you have a ton of layers in photo shop huge huge files okay well now I'm thinking holy crap these air video layers this's going to be massive it's actually not these clips are simply being referenced you're not actually importing the clips it's creating a project for you and so if I go ahead and pick let's see what see what this clip is here pick this clip I don't want it and I hit delete it didn't delete that file from anywhere it's still out there is basically a reference from know kind of like you'd have maybe in like room all right so I could make all these changes I can adjust things it never hurts the original file so when you're saving you file save as you're saving it as a photo shop document it's a psd so you're saving out so I'm just going to call it kiss video demo project and I don't need to set any special settings I just save it and so you definitely want to do that periodically so pretty easy so far looks good yeah if the reference of mages if for some reason you move your original files is a going teo yeah just like light room so if you actually if you actually look at what I did in the original way that I did this I made it a little bit easier for us here um I made a folder called selects and then when it within that folder I made one called the kiss video project and then like the exported so I want to keep my file structure the same if anyone's a nerd out there never designed also websites it's like if you move move ah sub directory and then it doesn't link up anymore because it has to be in a correct hierarchy or if you've used light room same exact thing so you want to make sure harv you said it you're not moving clips all around the place what I'll do is make one folder for that entire project I can move that folder I just can't move where things are in relation to them so for example I actually did this entire edit this morning I did on my laptop or last night and I put it on jeff's drive I just drag and drop the whole folder everything was still linked up totally find when I open up that photo shop document because they all stayed the same relative to one another I'm really good on that point so you know if that's backwards compatible that's if it was going to send it to an editor like on cc and it goes to see a six because it's ah so okay so really really good question it's it's kind of like if you have a newer version of like in design you can open it in older version sometimes but some of the features don't exist anymore so it's the same thing you can't open it but like there are new things that exist that didn't then because I have that problem in premiere I mean shoot or edit now in c c and I say if I give it a video editor sometimes thie parameters aren't the same and they can't actually open my project falsify started something for it was a two minute piece and I already did thirty seconds and I'm like I don't have enough time to finish this can you finish this they either have to come over to the office and they have to do it that way I have to save it is a different file I mean it's it's very tedious to make that happen so good question awesome all right so I'm happy so forest seems pretty easy going nice and slow so I could edit my clips by dragging watch it slips everything good clad blocks everything over to the left I could re size things same thing scrubbing okay so got that so far but I'm looking and I can tell that my clips do not match in contrast like look at this one this particular clip does not match the correct exposure for everything else and so this was recently called color grading that you're doing premiere well if you guys know how to use adjustment layers and layers masks it's the same thing so it's pretty great what I'm going to do is selected on that letter you need to make sure you're selected on that particular layer which is actually that cliff so layer is a clip I'm going to go over to my layers palate and I'm going to click on the half moon cookie with which is the adjustment layer with a leather mask and so this is usually how I would apply changes toe levels and changes the color and things like that and my regular images see exact same here so I'm gonna click on let's do curves for example so when you click on curves I'm going to make a curves adjustment and I mean I was gonna pick something kind of maybe about there what you're looking for is you see how you have that little arrow pointing down it is on ly applying it to that clip so we did whatever it's pointing to it's only going to a place that clip so if I move over to the next one it didn't change the exposure so it's great because I can change color and I can change uh whatever I need all the same stuff but what's even better is let's say I'm flipping forward and I'm looking at look at this clip right here if I go ahead and play levels adjustments or a curve because I'm thinking you know what maybe I want more contrast in her face or something while looking at it and I'm thinking ok but if I brightened everything up that way on the side where I can see some fabric is going to completely blow out while you still have they're masks so how their mask work if anyone doesn't know I do have a three day creative life workshop it's uh retouching and create a photo shop effects I taught it actually almost exactly one year ago and then I did a one day condensed version for a photo shop week and so he talked about adjustment layers and larry mass and so this is basically how it works when you hit one of the half moon cookie one of these options you see here when you click that it's basically putting in gel over that photo or in this case a clip and so wherever you see white it means that effect is applied but let's say I want a late enough this clips on me lighten up this clip here and I really just wanted it lightened up on her face what you can do is you can grab a black brush so I'm over here with the brush all your same things of opacity and hardness of the edge of the breast and size and all of that still fly and so wherever clicked on that mask that I paint it will hide that effect so you're saying how basically increase the contrast and I painted black and so removes that effect which is really really great the biggest thing you have to watch out for is if somebody's moving this's way too advanced for what we're going to cover here you could actually make it follow the person in photo shop if you wanted I'm returning the effect into a smart object in your tweeting in between it exists but what I would basically say is you're better off doing these type of enhancements if the subject isn't moving so I wouldn't do this on slide shots or maybe it's just that part stays consistent in the top of the frame you could get away with it so what I could do here is leave her face light but paint back in some of the detail on the edges any questions out there so far and I'm good to go there are one or two about working with both photo shop and premier for example dugger once dog art wants to know can one at one clip in photo shop and then edit all the clips and premiere so maybe do these effects on one thing exported imported into into premiere and work with two yes ok it's not completely seamless but let's say that for some reason the effect that you're comfortable with you know how to get in photo shop and you have no idea what's going on him from here you'd open up is a project and then export it again as a video clip which you then important to premiere so it's not like they don't seamlessly talk yet I'm guessing that will eventually happen and maybe this all become one gigantic program that does everything but yeah and that's actually in the few things that I don't use premiered to munch he uses a lot more than me that's how he chose to do it cause I was like I know how I retouch my photos so I know how to get that coloration no idea how to do it premieres that's actually exactly what I do I have a question from duty who would like to know like large video product projects in photo shop is that bogging down your computer or d field because of their just some nails that it doesn't okay so yes and no on there's a point where if you have enough of these effects and you're adding maybe some credits and some smart object movements and you have enough clips open the reason would bob down your computer is because of how it renders so what that means is when I make a change to a these files like I just plain applied the adjustment layer photo shop passed actually interpret for you what that would look like so it's doing work to give you a preview so if you have a change applying to every single clip when you play it back it has actually store that because you've not rendered anything it's basically does its memory it's interpretation so what you'll see is you'll see it jump a little bit because it's holding all that memory and it's cash so it's not that it really slows down your computer it's more that you have problems with playback there are ways to soup that up but that would be more for like technology to do that great one from photo gord and all extended beyond what he asked it says can you use mark filters and my question is is there anything that you can do in photo shop on a photo that you can't do to a video yes there are definitely things that you can't do you can do smart filters you can make images smart objects but for example if you liquefy maybe I thought that I wanted liquefy in her jaw line um I can't actually do that because it will follow throughout the entire clip but I'm going to show you how to do something where you could import a clip as frames if I wanted to go through the effort of retouching orb liquefying every single frame actually could so um if you wanted to be able to offer your plants the ability to make him look skinnier and video you could I so would not I recommend that at all but yeah they're actually work around because you turn your video clips into still frames so anything you can do to a still frame like a photograph you could do to those frames and then exported back out is a video and then work with that video piece you can't actually do that in the same project though just as a heads up you can't turn it into frames and work on it and then treated as clips you have to open up a totally separate project work on that save it bring it back into that project I have a question if you don't mind can use programs like nick software to drag and drop footage in and edit the footage off yes and no if if it's a plug in that allows you to create basically a souped up adjustment layer like if you look at it and it didn't change the pixels that just added an effect on top yes you can but if it needs to actually rast arise like affect each pixel then you would have to do it in the way we import as clips and then you can apply an action to apply that effect to every single one of those frames so if you just run an action you're thinking all that's a lot of work it's actually not you could set up a zen action leave your nick filter to apply to every single one of those frames and then just come back that sounds great I mean ultimately it's just sounds like you know photography when I do photography I generally do things with actions to match different shots outside a light room I don't like to do the same effect over twenty twenty images it's actually because you can do more special effects without having to learn a new program say like aftereffects aftereffects is endless but if you're comfortable here might be a really great place to start my question is actually very close to his but it's for the action like from implying inaction is it the same as when you're editing a photo that where you put it it only adjust the layers that you know what I mean where you put it on the yes but you you can't really treat these the way would apply an action it would be more when you had the frames like you to see what you'll do is each frame is a frame of video so for example if I go ahead and just open up what is this one one two six three so I'm gonna create a new project it's actually just open up a new file something totally differently had open I say one two six three um and I'm gonna open one two six three if I just open it normally it'll open like this okay that's not what you want to do if you want to run actions what you would do is you would dio file import video frames two layers of time loves it it is the time laughs it's actually timeless so when I go ahead and find that same video onto six three hey open uh we could talk about this more but I can grab is you're in and out points I could select maybe that part of the video and it okay it takes the state's playing twenty four frames per second and its two seconds so it's going to be twenty four times two different individual layers so it's going to be so in this example and no harmony I actually selected but there were oh dear I think I read something once his five hundred was a cut of that five hundred cut off so for what I selected there were five hundred frames you could apply actions to these frames because they're not moving image there actually photographs and so that's what a time lapse is a time lapse is when you take a serious of images and you string them together to simulate motion and time well that's actually what every video clip is so that's exactly the same thing for each one of these layers you now have you could apply actions to every single one of these just let it run and do the effect there but not when they're clips you can't just apply in action what you can do your adjustment layers and their master I can see how time consuming that would be a photo shooting sixty frames a second or thirty frames is thinking right you would just do like you would pick a second so when I want to open that up I could set in and out point in order if you can see where I could I could drag the start and stop of the frame I would be very careful on what I actually opened up and if I only want apply the effect one second I just do it one second or two seconds there's a famous video by nick knight he did a music video from york where she's got like interference seeing pearls sewn into her skin I'm being it sounds like I'm weird but it's really cool on he took it from abstract into a photo and he was basically he important and left it for weeks to do photo shop actions on the frames exported those and then brought them back in and play them it's video clips so if you just looked it up it's it's nick knight york and frequent is called oh pagan poetry there's nudity and it's weird just warning you but that's what they did for photos for work no nazi forget all okay all right excellent so we've got the basics of that right you can apply your special effects you could actually imported as layers if I did an action here on all those layers I'd have to save it out as may be in a movie and then add media here to add on is a clip so it's got some workarounds again it's not you can tell it's not completely seamless all right so I've got on my clips here I'm able to make change is bringing up this clip all right so we've got that but what happens if maybe you want teo add something on pop like a special effect or another layer in photoshopped there's something called blend modes if you don't know blend modes they'll change your life I promise it completely changes everything that you do in photo shop and so what it is is a blend mode changes how lair interacts with a layer below it and so if you've seen some of my tutorials I can add lens flair to it still where I can add a pattern to someone's face you could do the same thing with video in photo shop but if I try to do it and just import media here it ends up as a clip on the end it won't go on top which is where I actually need it to be so what I would do and it would click over on that that little uh film thing again instead of add media it would be new video group so when I had new video group it makes layers in the video timeline not just adds layers which is really just adding a clip on the end all right so what what is like a lute new track and if you've done anything with tracks and audio that's what it is it's like the same exact idea and if you see here we have visual tracks the video groups look down here there's audio tracks and I could do the same thing I can clip on this add new audio track so it literally is a track all right so for the last couple minutes here I'm gonna show you how to dio cool special effect and just taught me this saying that you could do it in premiere and I'm like well I don't know premier let me see if I can do in a photo shop and you can so the company that this light leak love best of all based out of australia they're very very small company but they re create lend slur effects that their whole job is they record lens flare fact similar to what lindsay gets out of camera what we get with the little filters they also do like star wars presets so if you ever seen the stars videos with the lens flare and michael bay videos same thing they replicate all those things which is really cool and their other ones there's a company motion v effects where they have the same thing so just know that like any of the cool stuff and textures that you would want to add and oh there's film grain tract but quickly with light leak love actually it's about ten dollars for a bunch of videos can you open up the file with the different videos that they have just show you guys more or less what they do generally for a certain number it's about ten dollars going down to fifty per cent special for you guys on creative fly if they were watching and lindsay should actually have on her block so that running about five bucks per file which is really cool so these are the video overlays that they have if you look they just recorded lens flare that's all their record you can overlay that over to video and replicate what you're getting right at the camera and it's a video lens flare it's not static so it's constantly moving with your video so doesn't look like hey it's faith iove related on top it's completely organic in that manner and so something that jeff is going to do in his video later is ad film grain so if you want something that looked like it was recorded on film I know how I would do it in photo shopped for a photo well if it's static you can tell if it's not moving and you put on a video you can tell so they have recordings for overlays to make the film grain look like videophone graeme it's the exact same concept sounds like stock things I mean they have film grain with dirt they have film grain with hair on it I mean it's really what you want to shoot if you want to let you know if your lens wants to be like if you want it to look dirty it can look charity I mean it's really up to what you aesthetically want its creativity again so all right so I'm going to add that in so I've added another track of video if I click here and I hit add media I saved a couple here so I have crystal overlay here another one what what was it star trek star wars not this one started this one's a star trek so open the one in the star trek because it's just that I couldn't use don't start that argument that way there's going to be chatter in the chest room's right so if I play this right now it's just the same as I would do overlay in um normally in photo shop if I put like a lens flare texture or whatever I have on top and I dont change the blend mode that's what you see because it's on top so what you have to do is you have to change the blend mode so if I'm selected on that layer here's where you find blend moments where says normal so changing that changes how that layer interacts with the layers below it so for example if I change it too soft light and let me play that back it's adding lens slur movement so it was using that a lot of my shots where I didn't have a lens flare like I didn't shoot through the crystal because the prom was it has things that were overexposed and have all these nice highlights and then I'd have a perfectly exposed nicely contrast the image and it it was jarring it was messing it up for me so what I would do is I would drag that ll ensler over something that wass not using lens flare and it would add land slur to it now I noticed that the system was kind of bogging down for but is that because you didn't render or is that because okay okay so the same thing is if you if you in light room if anybody's ever applied like a batch process okay and sometimes you'll get a photo and you're like wait I know a change it's a black and white with contrast and vignette but it doesn't look like that you double click on it it opens it and it takes a second to load that's the same thing in video I gave it I gave instructions of how I want to preview that file but it hasn't gotten a chance to render it yet so right now you see that line along the top anything that's rendered means it's already processed and thought up and shown me with that preview looks like we'll have that green like this has been rendered you've already previewed it so now when I go back and play it it won't get stuck so there's actually in the menus there's way to render it and he'll be going through that a bunch of his presentation but now I can play it back and it won't stutter eso what I would actually do see now how it's much more smooth so sometimes it all do is rendered all or I'll just let it place through once because it's gotta render it all and then I'll go back and watch it um there's better ways to do it in premiere but we work in a photo shop here one thing that I will know is you're looking at this and help flynn modes work is any attributes attributes of that top layer will be applied to layer below it so for example blue blue was not the color palette that I was going for so what I would have to do is over here clicking on that in this case it was the star trek layer I'm gonna hit on my adjustment layers and their masks go to q saturation and de saturated and so now I'll just have the little lens flare but I won't have the color associated with it

This great workshop helps me to start a new experience with video, Lindsay and Jeff are so clever with a teaching very easy to follow, now I know the basics to work with movement, I got a new vision on how to take advantage of many years of photography experience, this is a new medium but image itself is the same, I recommend this to any newbie interested on getting a solid base to start.

Fantastic class! Watching it in 2019 - and still finding relevant. Excellent way to ease photographers into the scary waters of video footage and production... and perfect for somebody who already has some basics to take it up a notch and challenge themselves quite a bit! Loved this class, very helpful.

I bought this class because, I recently bought my first DSLR with filming capabilities. But when I start looking at it and after watching a couple of instructionvideos on YouTube I kinda got overwhelmed. This class broke it all down into clear pieces for me. Lindsay and Jeff have nice and clear teaching style. They covered everything but didn't get to far into the nitty gritty details. They always told how important something was and if you have to do it in a certain way or that is your artistic choice. I certainly can start off with making video with a lot more confidence now. The course is packed with information. It took me much longer then 3 days to watch and take 37 pages of notes!
