Workshopping Students Lesson Plans
We're going to actually have a chance to talk to some of our in studio audience about their lesson plans so I'm wondering if there's anybody who is willing to be mike any pig this time around everybody off off the top susan you're anything maybe like anything okay so elise if I could have my white board back I would love that ok so we're going tio workshop your your lesson plan so what are we going to do our thing go right thank you so much perfect so we've already run our objective do you remember what it is I didn't write it down but it wass um we had an ancient technique it was fun it was an emerging pattern it was simple um wait so we were working on different routes is that path way have different pathways and we have different thread dredd choices for your color tory's solar choices ok so how long do you think are clashed this class should be I did a dry run on this class about a month ago and I uh I think I scheduled two hours and it actually went to three just because people we...
nt over just get the working great so let's put it on as to because maybe just to make it three just building more student work time so we're calling this the sasha go embroidery class yeah yep and we're about two hours what's our level uh all levels levels any prior knowledge needed no no, no prior knowledge great um awesome on my end age and they're just because it's a needle great, so maybe eight and above maybe sure eight and up. Great. Okay, so are you? What are the demos that you're thinking that you're going to need for for our class? They like to show a completed projects and anything show I'm going to show what you can do with the pattern, so I have a jacket that I've done oh god, the yolk with the pattern ok, one of the designs ok, so what is the final product for the classes? That area project is a project that it was a technique class initially, so the project part I haven't figured out let's just leave it as a technique then because it was example are initially so the sampler is going to just be like a like a square square. So are you? So you're going to demo with the first thing you're going to show a show I'm going to do kind of ah, what I wanted to do was, well, what I was doing is I have the instructions already, so I had my instructions on an easel and I said, this is how you all have these instructions and this is how we let's just run through these, and I followed that plan and so we started out with the tools so it was the type of fabric to use that are most optimal to use the type of needle because the needle is really important the type of threat that I like to use but also showing examples of other threat that they could use um graters a ah ring that you can wear if you want tio I mean just kind of an accessory type of the thing okay great and then apart from explaining all of that what's the first thing you show we had everything you're going to show how to thread the needle ok so how to thread because that's a unique is it like a special way of threading the needle or is it like no it's on special but it was really surprising to me that people didn't know how to do that how do I do that great so yeah it's interestingly what christine was saying it always you know you have to assume that they don't know and sometimes there's even surprised at how little even going from there how little how you back it up even more how to thread the needle uh huh and then what on howto how tio how to actually started with the tail the technique to started with a tail so it looks nice on the back and on the on the front christ you're going to show this all in the first demo ah and then howto go just kind of go in and out and following well, what I like to do is show them how they had a visualize and visualization is a really big part of it visualising the pattern because it kind of looks like a bunch of lines and complicated when it's really if you follow the lines the pattern emerges and and so at what point are we ready to like let them work for that point I'm ready to let hm yeah start ok so then they're gonna work and is there any is there another their second demo there's there's something else that you're going to show not yet but what I did in the first class is I had everybody just kind of stop and I'll show what they were doing in the colors and they were using yeah that's a really good we're going to talk a little bit about that in a later segment about how to highlight student work as they're working which is all it was just such a good idea especially for a student who is a little bit more shy or timid probably wouldn't show it off on their own um is there anything else? Well one of the things I did was I had everybody I had a a big bowl of colors of threat and everybody pick their own color I love that because you're providing them with fried I provided the materials yeah, and any time you can give your students choice in that sense is even I mean, it sounds so funny, but even adults like I remembering quit when I took christine's class she had all of these stacks of fabric and so we all got to choose our fabric, but it was like, you know, you know you wanted to and she did she drew names out of a hat that was most fair way and I remember I was like one of the last people I was like, I'm not going to get the color I wanted, you know? So anyway it's always fun to have, um, choice or, you know, within reason choice so they don't know look the same exactly spin on it so we have and then isn't this the rest of it just student work time? Great. And then what do what do we want to always end with? Ah photograph in a group hug I love the group hug you want to make sure you always have a little wrap up right and the photos a great way to get everybody together it's also a good way of getting everybody stop working one thing I'm thinking about it because it is needlework it might be a good idea to just say okay everybody let's just kind of stretch your fingers and do a little longer stretch here so I just took it that's great yeah feel free that's it that's the cool thing about being the teachers you kind of run the show so you want to get everybody to stop and stand up and take a stretch break than then you can do that I thought ok thank you susan for sharing now I want to get one more person in just just so that we're all getting a little bit of it of an experience of what this is like so is there one more of you guys who would like to be my brave volunteer kate I see you I love it we love it so what class lesson plan would you like to work uh like to a project for so in your own uh spandex lycra hoody romper I love it ok so spandex we can probably come up with a better yeah name like more catchy name but spandex put e romberg okay great so it's a project and so we're maybe not going to write the lesson objective right now but we'll keep that in mind and we can go back to it on our break how long do you think I mean this is kind of ah probably three hours okay which isn't there is a romper head to toe uh no it's just the one piece was just a little shorties okay but it's involves like little only has two themes various too slow for but so see, I'm already like you already proving that this is the most amazing class so it's going to be you're gonna be ableto make an entire hoody robber in three hours which sounds like an amazing feat that's also I've done it so I talk about one hundred two last week but you're already halfway there you've already done your dresser ok, so we have three hours what kind of a level? Um some prior experience with a sewing machine okay, but can it be for like the beginner sewer you have turned a little it could actually be for an absolute beginner but different teaching mortham like four people you have to have some sewing machine experience ok, so we're going to global is beginner just basic sewing machine knowledge that's great. All right, so how do we how we're going to start like what's the first thing that you're going to explain and show I'm going to explain to them how to cut out their pattern on dh ha ha um and then how to pin it, huh? For slowing pinning great. Is there any special that probably be special instructions for sewing with so I'm stressing stretchy style that's why I'm cutting out spandex also kind of do you need to be patient with it? And so I really believe that just those two things with my first some oh I agree I think that's a really good way to start um because they're that involves special spandex um explanation. Ok, great. And then you have a little work time the work time probably fifteen to twenty minutes, huh? Great. And then for the second demo, it'll be sewing the first two big scenes. First tio ceremony handwriting's disintegrating too. Seems um and so then I came from a little bit of work time. They're great. That will probably. People are like thirty minutes and then I'm going to have a third time, which will be, um, during the leg. Seems so leg seems great on we'll show them finishing. I think at that point to, you'll show the finishing and yeah, I agree. Uh huh. Great. And then then wrap up, right? Always wrap of this is probably into me an awesome opportunity to have your students. I think the group photos will be pretty great. Yeah, I agree. This is a great yeah, a changing room. A group photo in spandex anytime you get one of those things classes awesome. Okay, so I feel like I didn't really help it all I think you already had, but it's helpful to see it out on the board is not is nice it full even think about, you know, separating the themes of the great yeah, and you might even find I know that you've already kind of given this class. But you might even find after doing it one more time. You might. Even I maybe not for this, because it seems pretty straightforward. But you might actually adjust your demos a couple of other times, too. You know, you might decide I'll actually khun do those two demos together or something, so I can always modify.

This was a very good class, well prepared and packed with such useful information! I've been teaching various arts and craft classes for over 10 years now and did it sort of instinctively. Ashley gave me the tools I needed to refine my classes and prepare really good classes outlines and how to find venues to teach and pitch my classes. That was awesome and I plan to watch it again and again because there is so much in it! This was a first class presentation! Thank you Ashley! Claude Aimée Villeneuve, Visual artist and teacher

I'm not even half way thru the online videos and want to recommend this class to anyone who just needs that extra boost to start their own classes! I like the fact that Ashley suggests that we think from a student perspective to help us to better plan. This class covers many things I have heard before BUT in greater detail. When I hear the 'WHY' of doing things, I'm more likely to follow thru. These videos explain many 'WHYs' (There are many informative sites/classes for this topic but not many people give you 'this is WHY' it should be done this way) Ashley gives the "WHY' and the 'HOW to'. If you want to teach and are mostly ready to teach, take this class and all the gaps will be filled in and you will be ready to go forth and teach your craft!

Great class -- watched live (most of it) and purchased for ongoing review. I've taught many things, including some crafts (decorating gourds, collage, making your own tarot-collages) but I gained new insights, ideas and confidence from Ashley's advice, the students questions and input, and the panel! I recommend this for anyone who wants to teach a class -- craft oriented, personal development, or anything else!
