Who Can You Serve?
Welcome back to fulfill your creative purpose we just finished up with uh lesson twenty three which is about creating value above and beyond the art and how we're going to go into a lesson twenty four we're gonna delve into who you conserve which is essentially who your target market is before that we have a special guest johanna who is visiting from new mexico and johanna was a um another she actually watched me on creative live on my last course than she enrolled in the mentoring program and she's in this thrash of this process just like you are she has I learned some things she's got some other things too still has to define for herself but she is here to share with you which he has learned there hi there hi and how are you so I never see these people it's always fun to actually see their face well thank you for coming thank you for having me guys this way yeah rushed so we're teaching a lesson that has to do with the the target market but I deliberately brought you on because you d...
on't know what your target market is yet right I don't know much at all at this point yes you d'oh yes you d'oh well I mean the point is that this is a process and that you don't always have all the boxes checked in one fell swoop but you have you do learn things over time and so what I'd like to do is just start by asking, um, in this process, and this is the same process that people are learning on creative life. Um, what was, like, so far, what's been the number one lesson that you've learned or insight that you've gained since we started working together in this process, uh, cash since there's so many kind of hard to choose, but I think whatever pops into your head, I think being really honest with yourself and knowing that it takes a lot of time but it's totally worth it to go through this process because I think I was expected and nose have been expecting teo get there faster, and I want to control things, but it has to take the amount of time is going to take and it's good it's going to be totally worth it. So right, so it s so you learn that the process takes time and it's worth the investment of time and energy, so if you're at home and you're feeling impatient and you are eager yet, well, you felt that right? Yes, definitely helps to have someone who doesn't maybe know you very well but can see you objectively bite yourself tio speak some honest truth into to the pain and suffering meant that I got there I know that if I wouldn't be where I'm at now if I hadn't had ants mentorship so I know that that's a huge part of it thank you well, I mean, not everyone gonna have ans mentorship but that is right that's also why we brought scott didn't more on so you can connect with people who will support you and if you don't have that and you know we don't have enough of those people in your life you khun you know, seek them out so you're gonna talk deliberately about seeking out mentors also so trusting the process what was he a second big thing you've learned so far that pops in your head? Um well, personally I think it's communicating very clearly with everyone around me, whether their clients or just even learning tio no, what I want very clearly and being able to stand up for that. So you learned for yourself about boundaries, whether their personal boundaries or boundaries in your art business, right? Because we had a little boundary lesson with your musician clients, right? Yes, yeah so I got it, but if you don't have good communication, bad things happen, right? So what did you so let's sew so talk a little bit about the lesson you learned what was the big takeaway from that challenging uh less than with the musician so talk about what you did and how you resolved it what was the situation and how to get us all of it so very briefly it was he and I had kind of agreed to just do this cool thing together on dh make some art and makes a music and put him together into this new forum and he had let me borrow his van to goto awesome for an art show and he was like, well, maybe you could do my album cover and we'll just kind of exchange well turned out to be white nine paintings the really massive that's a that's a long van rental nine yeah, you should be on now to drive the van now you should I get upgrade maybe two babies or something yeah, not big paintings in exchange for borrowing the van did everyone catch that? Okay, so but you was always oh my gosh well, it is a classic like how things just sort of creep and get bigger and bigger and bigger and before you know it, you're late. I did after I didn't do this like this is so dumb anyway, but it was a bit was an issue of boundaries oh, I'm just gonna go bad we're gonna go to get to her purpose hold on a second, so, um yeah, so are other man a year later we did this show on thanks to an we she said you've gotto get a copyright agreement you gotta wake you gotta figure out from this point on it was a huge mess and it took a lot of cleaning up on all in communication if I hadn't taken it from there and said okay, look, this has gotta be this's what I'm going to give you in exchange for what you've given me and I walk away with this amount of profit I walked away with all the profit for these paintings but you get the you get to use my artwork as your album cover but that's it you don't get no teacher yes, all paining you don't get the t shirts, you don't get anything above and beyond this is gonna be extra and and I have to win and you have to win this has gotta be a workable situation it can't just be this sort of vague, totally big theodry medication so the agreement has to be win win, right? And so before I'm gonna venture to say you were coming from a bit of scarcity thinking this was an opportunity too yeah, whatever yeah, but you got your boundaries on and I think you think you left it and you're still friends yes, exactly and if we hadn't communicated at that point when I am but when I told mentioned barely too and in an email that this was something going on she's like oh, I know what you're doing white way um yeah if I hadn't communicated that I would've been angry at him better at him that that another person take advantage of me when really I am the one that didn't communicate anything okay and then what was the third lesson that you learned or insight you've gained uh so trust the process have boundaries and the big one I think is through going through all the painful moments in my life that that I could take responsibility for for certain parts up to my arm's length and then it becomes their responsibility when it's their actions so it's not something that I can take blame on myself when it's not in my control that's not very articulate well okay, let me mirror back what I understand is that you are very eager to serve and help but what that can what can often happen is that in your and it was is also led to the most painful times in your life is that you're very um you take responsibility for yourself but you often start to take responsibility for other people's bad behavior and so now it's your fault right? Right yeah all right so I don't want you teo ice tell everyone this is not reality tv this this transformational tv, you can reveal what you want don't reveal what you don't want. I don't want to feel uncomfortable. I just want you, teo, but I want to take a look at your painful lessons so that we can so that the studio audience can understand how that is helping you get clarity on your purpose. So just the headline not story. What was the most painful time? A raise? The most painful time was a lecherous boss. We like to call him that way. Do we call him the lecherous boss? That's, his nickname he's a true took advantage of me and totally turned everything upside down because it was my whole world. It was my friendships, my job, my whole existence was around this job and he took advantage of my naivete. And just so you thought you were friends and you thought you had a good relationship with your boss and he turned in to be a letch and I blame myself for a long time. And honestly, it really wasn't until I started going through this process that I realized I still have things that I need to learn myself, that we're gonna be a long time coming, and it it has to take the amount of time it's going to take and but I also don't have to keep suffering the same way, you know you don't have to keep suffering the same way and if you notice the okay, so we have a situation with a musician right where she was taking on way more responsibility that belonged to him and then she set a boundary a written contract and it all it resolved itself and with the lecherous boss let's just calm electricity boss, because that's the name he earned that you know, he he was he was responsible for his illegal behavior, right? Not you, right? Okay, so I'm just going I'll stop there so that you could don't ask me about the others. What a worldwide broadcast, please all right, but I think suffice it to say the purpose in the painful lessons the other two were not going to dive into because I think we get the point is that you have learned that, um you know, you are responsible for you, you're not responsible for other people's bad behavior writing other people's bad behavior has undermined your self worth yeah and that's something that you've had to struggle with that really necessary shared with me you can disagree with me at any time, but this is what I'm sure that's what I heard and and so so if the purpose of your of those lessons were teo, it sounds to me that setting clear boundaries and not taking any more responsibility than belongs to you is what has preserved your self worth and your relationships like with the musician for example okay differently so here's where joanna is in the whole process she understands her purpose all right so and now she's starting to form permission so she understands something that's very important wisdom because a lot of us struggle with this we take on too much responsibility and we take on other people's bad behavior is a reflection of something that we somehow deserve if we don't try it and deserve a lecherous boss she's a hard worker I know she's a hard worker because I work with her she gets things done she's incredibly responsible and she really wants to please people and do a good job didn't deserve any of that no one deserves any of that this is a huge huge thing for you is obviously very personal so if that's her why those air why you um suffered those circumstances then we go to your what which is your mission so what do you think? And we're workshopping this at this point in time what do you think your your mission is I don't have it in a nice little meat that's okay we're not going for neat nuggets were going for hot messes right now. Okay, well that's what you get for sir I think uh I think it has to do with obviously communicating those boundaries, but then also understanding what real worth I have to offer and then protecting that but it's for so it obviously is going to come for something for other people, right? Because we can sure it's fun to make stuff just for yourself. Great. When it's for other people, I had it neatly in an e mail, but I think it was something along the lines of, of protecting and knowing your values so that you can, um, better other people, so protecting and knowing your value and your circumstances, your painful let me just say this, her painful lessons do not happen to men, typically, okay? They're they're they're pretty. They're pretty unique to being a woman, right? So, um, my my estimation that your mission is going, teo, be around helping women in particular, I understand they're worth, protect and protect their worth by maintaining clear boundaries and not taking on responsibility for things that don't belong to them, like if you have a lecherous boss, that was his fault. That was not your fault, and this is an issue that a lot of women fundamentally struggle with. So I think that your mission has something to do with that, what do you think? I think you're right e again, I don't deter, I would never be so arrogant like tell you what your creative purposes and your mission I'm just trying to mirror back what I hear from from you and what I hear from other people that's all I'm trying to do is here's what I heard and this is what is this? Is this what is this right? That's really all I'm doing okay, so now so you're just that you're just honing in on your mission. The other part of of your human experience is you have some spiritual and religious convictions that have helped inform your worth, right? Yes. So and it's also one of the areas we look at the most joyful times in your life, this one of the areas where you really feel connected to a community, right? Do you mind sharing that some of that I love teenage young women, young women in high school and college I think that they their blossoming, they're becoming the women they're going to be and I know that that's gonna be part of this. I don't know how who struggles with self image more than anyone. What who? Young adolescent teenage women have highest rates of anorexia, bulimia, cutting right and guess what, johnny you seduce used to be a teacher of high school students? Yes. Do you see how this is weaving together should have a leo, so be it it happened not like you're just like well, you're too close to it. You see this though? But can you guys see where she's headed down this path? Can you see it right? So I think also your religious convictions give you strength and I think it's something you can share yeah, because I mean they're they're these you know your religion as it is is basically it's a boundary guide book, right? Right and so it's very it's again this is your purpose and your mission is uniquely it's personal to you so you could only come from your unique experience, right? So I deliberately brought you on because you have not checked all the boxes but I also deliberately brought you on because I believe you will and I believe you will be very successful and you will not just make art. You will change people's lives and I think it's going to have a here gonna have a huge impact on women young women and you're going to teach them the lesson that you had to learn about the extent of, you know, self responsibility and the extent of it where it's really and where it's not yeah, and how boundaries play a big role in that whole idea of self worth and percent and self perception and so I believe I believe you will get there do you guys just talking to her? What do you guys think? She's goingto change some lives and makes a fantastic art has got the energy and she's going felix okay, so felix was a clear audience media on and he said you have the energy and so he knows that he's totally giving you the thumbs up so that's a vote of confidence right there. Thank you. Hi. Well, thank you so much for taking time out of your day. I appreciate it much and we'll be talking too soon. Okay, so gary, take care by you guys getting it? Do you see how she's not in the business of selling paintings you're not going to be for very much longer so she'll leave that into her value proposition and she was a teacher. She taught photography and she taught art it's all going to play out and here's the thing if you're noticing a pattern no one's like making any big change when it comes to defining their purpose, their mission, the value proposition, their target market it was already there it was already there. It doesn't come from me either. All right, it doesn't. I don't like say, this is your mission like here's, that form of meditation where they give you your mantra and that's the mantra you have to say forever cast on how this is you figure out your own mantra like your you have you already have a guidance system within you that you confine these answers hey, you don't need you know you don't need someone deepest oh the answer on you you have to find the answer and that takes some time and patience and a certain amount of resilience so what's going to lessen twenty for if you're following along in the discovery journal um it's on page I have to put my glasses on on page thirty eight and if you're feeling alone in this process you can go on go to join artists who thrive dot com and join the private facebook a group that group has really been vibrant and connected they've had google hangouts and done the homework together and really supported one another I think john you jumped into one of the google hangout at some point so don't try to do this by yourself it's too hard do you need help? You got to get help. So um so again it's like who also who can you serve so read this exercise it's really about sometimes we don't know who we conserve because we haven't sold this thing yet, right? Like john, you haven't really you've launched you have got monthly experiments, but you know you don't have a bunch of paying customers you have this view of followers but you have followers who were really significantly in positively impacted so you could do a study of how you could just ask them how they were served and use their language now felix, everyone khun benefit from what you do but you're not you don't really serve everybody not everyone is your customer I get that now and before we started I was trying to make everyone my customer because I was not in a way I'm selfish that I want to be seen by everybody I want everyone to believe me no I just thought I want to make myself you know right I want I want to offer my services to everyone but not everyone is going to be a client and that's time not everyone is going to resonate with you so I think I have get down you okay? Cool. Alright, good. So you did your homework that off my disagree I don't know no, we let's let's let's hear it let's workshop so described the characteristics of your ideal customer avatar. Other sensitive people who feel they too have something and want to understand it better. I think you're spot on this course has helped me to realize what do you guys think? Do you think skeptics they're going to sign up they'll cut you get a skeptics every now and then and your readings but in terms of your overall mission really it's people who already recognize that they are sensitive which is another way of saying that they feel that they're intuitive they may not know what to do with it. They may be confused it may be disrupting their lives there's no need afraid of it. They don't know who to talk, teo and you can help guide them through this journey. So all right, so we know that the person is sensitive. Let's get cem let's, get an fbi profile of your ideal customer avatar. What else do you know about this person? Well, they might feel stuck or blocked in their grief over the loss of someone, whether it be unexpected or a loss they don't truly quite still understand. Okay, okay, so people who have suffered a loss so you do these workshops in half moon bay, all right, and services and in san francisco and what I'm gonna ask you to do is start looking for common personality characteristics and the people who are really engaged in loving these workshops. Not your group reading so much is your actual workshops? Sure. What do you see? What? The patterns that you see in common, do you can you recognise any now? Oh, yeah, okay, so what are they people who are like, ah lot like myself, very sensitive, you know, um growing up I used to be made fun of because I was really sensitive and I didn't choose that I always say you know, kind of who I am but now I understand it and I know how to use that to to help no wait so you khun you wouldn't really build like an fbi personality profile where you like notice she was a great for identifying your tribe often wear similar shoes similar clothes um have similar interests watch similar tv shows, similar books I mean you could actually literally get this information off of facebook um what kind of groups they belong teo so that you can more scientifically target your market to marketing to them and I think actually I because of the nature of what I do I might want want to have someone do that for me? Oh, absolutely because I don't I would say I don't want to know anything about anybody I just kind of want to be presented with I don't even want to know who they are they're well that's different cities different. So the person that you read for is one case scenario, but what I'm talking about here is your target market so that when you have your new website designed and the new copy written that you speak to that person one person who represents your ideal customer that's the purpose of this exercise that's that we're defining your target market so you're not going it's, really a general definition of who your best customer is? Um, does that make sense? Yes. Okay, because all your marketing in your messaging is shaped to reach that person, right? Um, so, that's, what that's about so again, go back to your, uh, case, john. Yeah, everyone could benefit from an acting positive change, but not everyone is your target market. And this is now, jen, I know you're still in the exploratory stage of understanding. I think you're getting grounded in your purpose, and you're fleshing out your mission, so don't worry about it. You don't need to worry about it right now. Just focus on the process if there's a certain sequence, follow the sequence if you want. One thing I've noticed in the facebook group is people haven't really figured out their purpose haven't really figured out their mission, and they're jumping to their target market. You can't put the cart before the horse it's gonna be a big mess if you do that, so don't do that. Just be patient with it. And if you notice, I think everybody said, be patient with a process, it takes time and it is certain amount of energy, so that is that I have a quick yeah question around that is that's a great point you're bringing up so for people who maybe have flushed out their purpose like me but beyond this one actually keep taking steps towards her mission like how do we keep that questioning going? Well, I have some questions um I would say find yourself a support group you know, find yourself a mastermind, find yourself a mentor I mean, I have to do the same thing. Yeah, no, I I'm trust me. I don't have it all figured out. I mean, craig has mentored me. Yes, me really, you know, pointed questions so that I can, you know, figure this out myself so it's like it doesn't really end does not like you get to a finish line it's an ongoing process likes to scott densmore plus point sound. Surround yourself with supportive people. Sometimes you have to pay consultants sometimes you find confined a mentor. Sometimes you can find a like tribe, but, um you need specialized knowledge. So one thing I'm goingto really emphasize you need specialized knowledge and you want to find the person who has special is close as possible to the knowledge that you need you want to get in alignment with them, you want them to mentor you or you want a relationship with them because you are not going to figure this out all on your own, and they've got maybe ten or twenty years on you. And you can skip a lot of mistakes in a lot of pitfalls if you have someone supporting you. So that was the end of lesson twenty four. Who can you serve? Hopefully got a sense of who you conserve, and we're gonna go to lesson twenty five. Will you choose to live your greatest purpose? That's, our next lesson, so thank you very much.

I think this course is extremely helpful if you follow her steps and do the work. This course can go through some very intense emotional moments, but it is all towards the greater goal of refocusing you and helping you find your meaning and purpose and most importantly, taking action on that to help others. I had many breakthroughs, but one of the areas that most helped me was to be patient with the process and give yourself the emotional payoff along the journey towards your long term goals. There is a lot of psychology in this course and it is necessary to tie your emotions into the actionable steps to get you past your struggles and focused on what is really truly important to you. I highly recommend this course if you want to get unstuck, want a road map to making a living as an artist from where you are today, and want to fulfill the best life that you can achieve.

I'm so grateful to be a part of this transformational course. I've gotten so much out of it already, and my vision for my creative enterprise has never been more clear. My thinking and vision have become much bigger, as well. I can see so clearly how to use my creative talents to create a profitable business that I can work in with passion and integrity.

“Like all worthwhile pursuits, you will get out of this what you put into it” Ann Rea. I am having a positive life changing experience thanks to this class. Now, I am able to identify much more clearly that my hobby was only fulfilling me and was not providing a service to anyone, therefore it was not allowing me to obtain the financial success that I am after. I expect to continue to mature during this class. I want to thank you, Creativelive and Ann Rea for creating content that will allow us to grow and possibly succeed in life.
