Another Way To Make Variables In Figma

Hey, everyone. Uh There is more than one way to make a variable. This video, I'll show you a slightly different way. Essentially, you end up the same part, but there's just a, a slightly different method for creating them. And also we're gonna look at the sweet toggle switch. Look over here, it says toggle, look at that little switch there. OK? We'll make a little multicolored logo as well. OK? Still a variable. Basically the same slightly different method of construction. Let me show you all right. In the last video I showed you how to make a component. OK? Command option K on a Mac. That's control alt K on a PC. OK? So we made two of them. OK? And then the two different options and we combine them as variants. OK? Uh I'm gonna do it differently in this video. We're gonna start with this little toggle switch. It's nothing, it's just a circle in a rounded rectangle. OK? But if I convert it into a component, I can actually jump straight to making it a variant. Hi, everyone. Uh Just a qu...

ick little update to this video. You'll notice that the word variant isn't over here anymore. Fig A has changed it slightly. OK? Over here it's actually under properties and you hit the plus. There is variant, OK? Click on that and what you need to do the second step is you need to add a second variant. That was all one step before, but now it is two steps. OK? So there you go. That is the update. You can continue on with the video. The other thing to remember though is that um remember I'm going to call lots of things variables. That is the wrong word. I'm going to do it all through this video. What are they meant to be called vian? That's right. You got it. All right. Carry on with the video. OK? And the same thing happens, right? We get this kind of component set and afterwards, OK? I can go into here and say that is my toggle for that way. OK? You just double click them to go inside of it and I'm going to switch that to that. So in my assets panel here, I've now got my little switch and I've got an option that says variant you go, if you name them badly, you end up with property one and variant two. OK? Naming, renaming them afterwards isn't particularly hard. You've got to rename them on the component or in your layers panel, you kind of see that one there is called variant two, that one's default and they kind of match over here. So you can either name them by double clicking this, OK, or doing it over here or be a bit better when you first made that toggle switch. Ok? If we make that toggle switch and we call it maybe the switch and call it slash off. Ok. It will help us automatically do this naming, but we weren't that clever. So we're gonna go do it afterwards. So first of all, the whole thing's called component one, which is not what I want. This is my switch inside that I got two variants. I'm gonna rename them over here. So the property is whether it is toggled on or off. Now, this is gonna do something fancy if I use, it doesn't really matter what I call this. But if I have my first one, which is default, ok? And that's gonna be off if I use the words off and on. Notice how this will change over here. Let's go. Let's grab an asset, let's grab the toggle switch out. And because I use the word on and off, can you see? It's got this little cool thing. It's awesome. There's a toggle switch, it does nothing. It's just because I use the words on and off, you can use the words true or false. Ok? Or um what else can you use? Yes or no. Ok. It might be a check box as long as you use those kind of that, those actual words not the word toggle, they're on and off, you get this like little switch and it makes us look fancy. Look at that. Ok, let's do one more. We'll do the logo. Um Have we done? I feel like we've done the logo already. Uh So I'm gonna pretend we haven't. I'm going to have this version. OK? This is an instance of my component. I'm going to break that instance and forget we attach it. OK? So it's just a frame now, let's have a look what it looks like. Yeah, it's just a frame now with my logo in it. So I am going to change the colors of the text on the inside. OK? So the same thing instead of like as long as it's a component to start with and let's use our naming convention. So let's call it a good name. Let's call it primary, primary color, convert it into a component, command option K mac control option K PC. Man, you getting sick of it? Do you remember it? That's the trick. Uh oh, we just click the button at the top. OK. So I've got this. What am I doing? I've given it a name, which is great. I've converted it to a component and instead of OK? And we're gonna add our variant. There we go. Once you've got this variant, you can actually add another one. So actually let's go into this and let's change the color of it to another one secondary. So this one here is gonna be called not variant two. This is gonna be called secondary color. You can add more to this by clicking this little plus here. Oop. OK. We've got another version and add your own sound effect. OK? And this one's gonna be our accent color. OK? There is another way you can click on it, hit command D on a Mac control D on a PC. So there are lots of ways of making variants. Just find the one that you're comfortable making. OK? This one's gonna be here. My logo is going to be this one here is gonna be the color you can choose. Let's add it to see what it does does. Here we go there. I can go through and say which color do I want color? Let's speak secondary accent color. Look at us making variables. So we've gone from lots of components kind of filling up our uh assets panel to combining things like the three versions, OK? Into one little unit. OK. What we can see here as well though is that there's actually three buttons. So this might still get out of control unless we make multidimensional variables which we'll do in the next video. All right, I'll see you there.
