Types of Coaching
I want to talk about, maybe somethings for some of the people online or in the room. If you've ever at all explored maybe getting trained as a coach. I want to explain what this coaching course is and is not for you. So one, it's not certification coaching. So there is, sort of, an International Coach Federation that will certify you as a coach. They have their own standards and methods. We are using some of those, but we are not abiding by those 'cause this is not to help you be a certified coach, okay? This is not life coaching, purely. Life coaches, maybe, use some of these techniques, but when you think about a life coach, that's what some people think about when they think about coaching, that's not only what we're talking about here, okay. And it's not sports coaching. That's just for everyone who asked me if I coached basketball. Really, I just threw that in for myself. So we're not so much focused on today. What we are focused on today is the best of many approaches. I have bee...
n seeking out, for years, the best methods of coaching and evolving my coaching practice, learning from other master coaches, reading, going to seminars. So I'm trying to bring the best of the best to you today. As best as I have for you. We will talk about lots of tools and frameworks, and we're gonna cover both the technical and emotional. This is very important, I'm gonna pause here. When we think about coaching, okay? Sometimes we can think about just the technical, and that's very important, right? For example, swimming is a great example. You actually, the technique of swimming is so important. You actually don't want to swim harder, you want to swim smoother to swim faster, okay? So technique, the shape of your vessel as you're swimming, critical. That's all technique based, right? However, often for people when they're learning swimming, especially as an adult, they might have a lot of emotional triggers with swimming. Maybe they almost drowned as a child, maybe it's been a deep embarrassment to them. So in order to teach them how to swim, you're gonna have to help them move through the emotional resistances that come up around swimming. Maybe that means doing some emotional coaching, maybe it makes it seem like you can tell them a story that gives them hope that someone else has done this as well. For example, the swim coach who does total immersion swimming, it's a very amazing approach to swimming. He taught a 93 year old man how to swim. The man had never really learned how to swim. He went to a retirement home that had a full size pool, and he learned this method, and all the way up 'til 97, I think from 96-97 years of age, he was still getting faster in his freestyle. So maybe you tell them that story to give them hope. Be like, "Hey, this 93 year old man learned how to swim. You can do it too." Right, but the point being we want to care to the emotional space of human beings learning to do a thing. 'Cause it's often what prevents people from making progress, or continuing. They might quit, right.

I recommend it but I must say I was sometimes lost and don't get what I was supposed to understand (frameworks, models... what are they exactly?). Like, ok, you will figure out yourself and I don't. I am not sure I can go back to my work and put into practice what I listen to today. A lot of great information but not enough examples, I would say.
