Custom Shooting Mode

Alright, page five on here, custom shooting mode. I talked about this near the top of the class when we talked about the mode dial. C1 and C2 are your custom settings where you can get the camera to memorize your favorite settings and you set the camera exactly as you would like it to work. Maybe it's manual mode in 500th of a second at F2. because you're shooting sports, but then at another point you want your camera in the program mode just with all automatic settings. So you would set your camera up and then come in here to the custom shooting mode and you would register your settings with either mode C1 or C and then they would be memorized when you turn the camera to that dial. If you want to clear those settings out, you got the camera from somebody else and you don't like those settings, you just want to clear them out, you can do that right here. One of the problems that I have with the C1 and the C2 setting, and this is a hard choice here, is let's say you have it set up for a...

ction photography where you need ISO 400 and a thousandth of a second. And then in a particular situation you find, well that's almost right, but I need ISO in this particular case. You set your camera to ISO 800. Well do you want that to be the new standard for that custom setting? Or when you flip out and come back you want it to go back down to that 400? And this is the option where you get to choose that. Auto update set says that when you're in the custom mode, any change you make becomes the default standard in that custom mode. And for some people it's perfect, they're gonna find that they need to just tweak that mode a little bit and they'll take that mode and go from there. Other people say, nope, this is the way I always want it, I'll tweak it from now, from time to time, but I always want it to go back to its original system. And so it really depends on how you use those custom modes in there. Some people are gonna want to put that on enable, but I think vast majority will probably want disable. If you want to clear all the camera settings and actually this is what I did just before this class because I wanted to have my camera, factory fresh, you might say in the camera settings, and so if you haven't been paying attention for the last hour and a half of this class, you could just delete all the camera settings in the camera and start fresh from scratch. And so do that if you're selling your camera or something like that. Copyright information is kind of nice, little sub-menu in here where you get to enter your information right into the data of the camera. You can enter your name and your copyright information and display it in the camera. And so we'll have one option for entering the author's name, so put your name in there if you want. You can put copyright information, you can put your website, contact information, all rights reserved type text, anything you want in here, and that's gonna appear on the metadata of the photos. It won't appear on the photo. It'll appear with all the data that goes along with every photo. And then if you want to delete all that information, well it's pretty easy to do right here. Here's another fairly new item. There are QR readers in a lot of phones these days, you can just download a QR reader app very easily, and if you just put the camera into this little mode here it'll give you a QR code. You scan that with the appropriate app on your phone and you will get a PDF of the entire instruction manual on your phone. So you don't have to carry around the good old thick instruction manual if you're willing to keep that data on your phone. It's very easy to find it, just go to the QR code and scan it in on your phone. There's a number of certifications and logos that the camera have passed and regulations that it's adhered to, those will be listed here. This one's a little bit more important, the firmware of the camera. So the camera has a lot of software that is running the operation of the menu system and everything else that's going on. And from time to time there's an update. And what you need to do is download the update, put it onto a memory card, put the memory card in the camera, come here to firmware, and it will ask you to upload the new firmware on the camera And we haven't had any firmware updates so far, we haven't had a lot on this series of cameras, and so I don't expect too much action in this category, but it's likely to happen at some point. There's some bug or some small improvement that Canon is gonna want to add to the camera. They're gonna post that information at their website and it's gonna be up to you to go to the website, download it, and go through the work of putting it on the camera. It's really not all that much work. Takes me about five minutes of time if everything goes smoothly. But as I say, they can give you new features, and make the camera a little bit better than the day you bought it. So keep an eye on their firmware, about every six months or so you might want to head back to Canon's website and see if they have anything new that might be helping you or the camera out. They also have firmware for some of their lenses and you may see this as an option depending on which lens you have attached to the camera. And it would go through the same update process.

Always enjoy all of John's classes, but especially this one since I've decided to upgrade from my previous 6D. Awesome camera and this one is so much quieter than the older one. Thank you for explaining things in terms and ways that are easy to understand!

Thanks for a very useful course John. Not to get out and enjoy the new toy. Wish I had done the similar course for my previous camera (60D); will be recommending it to the person I am giving the camera to.
