Here's, where you khun set up how long your camera stays on so one minute till it turns turns off and powers down, I think it's a fine number. All right. I'm going to recommend a change here on the auto rotate. What you do is you want it on the on computer, but not on the camera. What happens if you do it on the camera? Is it rotates all yur verticals into the smaller form out of the screen, and so they're not very large on screen and so just haven't rotated on the computer that way when you downloaded to your computer, all yur verticals are rotated. If you want a format, your memory card, this is where you would go in and do it. This is one of the things that I do on a regular basis, and I will have put in my menu at the end. We were gonna talk about that customizable green menu on the far right of the tabs filed numbering how each picture you take gets numbered. In general. I would leave this continuous, but you can go in and manually reset it. Or you can have it reset every time you...

re formatted card and start shooting again for most people, continuous would be the best option. You can create different folders of images, so if you wanna have one memory card and you want to have two groups of images, you could create different folders and shoot to those folders you could do playback slide shows from those folders another option would be to have to memory cards so it costs a little bit more but you could do it on one memory card if necessary so the second little tool tab in the setup menu the lcd brightness I would recommend turning this off of otto and putting it in manual that little light sensor on the back of the camera will start changing the brightness level and if you have exposure simulation, which adjust the brightness according to how bright and dark the picture is going to be, it plays havoc when this is set in auto as well. And so in general, you're just going to want to leave this set directly in the middle date and time you're of course going to want to have the correct date in time set, so be aware of time zone changes when you're traveling and be aware of daylight savings time changes with the location that you are in next up we have language, so if you see a language like this in your camera, you're gonna have something very strange going on does anyone hear in class and know what language this is? Does this look like an unusual language I thought I would put it one of the more unusual language is actually this is not in the camera actually find out this is cling on they actually have the characters for cling on which is not in most cameras I had especially made seventy which has cling on in it this is probably where you're gonna want to change it to your native language all right next up is the video system for north america here we used a system called ntsc in europe and other parts of the world they use a system called pal set it up for whatever system your country uses so that you can play back here images on your tv sensor cleaning this is what you're going to probably want to leave on enable where it automatically cleans the sensor every time you turn the camera on and turn the camera off but this is also where you can go in and manually clean your sensor and there's two steps to doing this and I think everyone is qualified for step one but not everyone is qualified for step two so step one is getting one of the little rocket blowers in what you do is you take the lens off put it in the manual sensor cleaning hold the camera upside down and blow some air in there be careful not to punch the sensor while you're doing this now the second step requires a very careful hand and not everyone feels comfortable doing this, but you can buy these sensor swabs and alcohol and wipe across the censor and you khun turn the camera into a repair shop and have them do it they'll charge of fifty bucks or seventy five dollars to do it, but you can buy these little devices and there's a variety of him out there. This is my favorite and these cell for about fifteen or twenty dollars for a group of four of them, I think and you would take your lens off, put my head lamp on and then very carefully wife accosts across the sensor if there is something on it, sometimes dust will get on it and it just sticks and it won't come off and that might happen after a period of time or if you change lenses in a really bad environment where there's a lot of dust and things blowing around viewfinder grid display so I may have said that incorrectly before, but we talked about a grid display that was on the back of the camera, the viewfinder greatest what you see when you're looking in the viewfinder and so this is one that if you're an architectural photographer he'd probably want to have it turned on most other people will probably want to have it turned off it's just a little too much stuff going on in the viewfinder for many people, next up is our kind of final tab in the setup menu, our battery info and this is really cool because you can go in here and you can see exactly how good the battery is I to the hundredth percent, you know, it's a ninety eight percent good, you can see how good it is in there, and so you can also see kind of how good the overall recharge performances on the battery. Next up is thie info display options, and this is one that you would want to go into and check off all the options in here. This is what you will get to when you press the info button on your camera, and I like having all my options available to me so I'd check off all of those three options and then back out of that system. Next one down is your camera user cities. What you would do to set up the c one c two and see three custom settings on your camera is you would manually set your camera however you want, maybe you like aperture priority at five point six spot metering, continuous shooting go to the custom menu right here, the camera user settings and you would register that as c one c do or see three you could then go re set your camera up in another way and set it up for a second and then a third option. And so for anybody who has very specific things, this is kind of a good way to make sure that everything gets setback to that standard. All right? Moving on copyright information great new feature on the camera you can actually put your name in the camera so you can actually have a copy, right? John gringo and I would encourage everyone to put copyright john ringo and all of their cameras and so when people go to download the image ago, john gringo shot this picture and that's assuming you shoot good pictures but only do it if you shoot good pictures on we can also see what else could be doing there. You can also put copyright details, so for instance, like if you had a company name and you had a second shooter, you're a wedding photographer and they were shooting for you. You could have their name as thie artist essentially, but your name is the company that owns the rights to the photograph. So there's some nice little options in there and then if you have totally been screwing up for like the last half hour while we've been setting all these things, you can clear all the settings in your camera to go back to their standard factory default settings and then we have our firmware version here now I checked just the other day and I needed to update the firmware in my camera they come out with a firmware update and I hadn't seen it for some reason and so what I did is I went to cannon's website I went to the camera page for the seventy and there's a little listing of things there on one of the things is firm where I clicked on that and it had an option to download the latest firmware and so I downloaded it to my computer. I loaded a memory card into my cf card reader and I copied that over to my card. I put the card in the camera I then came to this firm where version and I updated the firmware took about three minutes or so for it to load new firmware and firm where if you're not sure it's like software but it's this it's the software that runs the operations of the camera and from time to time they have little bugs you know when you use the self timer and you're in the spot metering mode set to continuous high it's a little green and they fix that ah, and as well as a number of other the other the most common software fix is a misspelling in an unusual language they have one word that is misspelled in some language icelandic and they figured it out there going do little software fix on that. And so, from time to time, they will do bigger things as well. Beyond that. And so it's. Good to have the latest firmware. So you can find out more information by going to cannon's website and going to your instruction manual about loading that in there. But that's, the current version as of the taping of this show.

Excellent class. Lots of great info demonstrated in a very easy to follow presentation. John is superb at slides, and little details. Thanks for a great day of learning. I love my 7D even more :)

If you already shoot with a Canon that is not a 7D, a lot of it you may already know, but it will help you get to know your way around the 7D's features, such as its autofocus system which, with exception of the more recent 1D MK4/X and 5D MK3, is one of the most advanced in the Canon DSLR range - this means it can take a little while and practice to get used to. The course is probably best suited towards the beginner and possibly intermediate users - and maybe someone coming from another camera brand such as Nikon and Pentax, etc. More advanced users will find it basic, although there is some good information on how to set the camera up, and setting the more advanced custom functions. Conversely, this is not a workshop on basic photography, so a little basic photographic knowledge will help you understand the topics being discussed (but that's not to say that a beginner won't get anything out of it). At the time of writing this review, cL have bundled this course with another of John's courses, "Fundamentals of Digital Photography". So I would recommend you take advantage of this special price if you are starting out.

Very useful. Picked up some good tips even though I've had my 7D for around 12months. I feel a lot more confident in using the camera and love the back button focusing set up for when I'm composing images using a tripod. Love John Greengo's relaxed, unassuming style and his openness in sharing his knowledge and experience. GT New Zealand
