Class Introduction
I want to dive into the tough questions, first and foremost, with all of you. What are you struggling most with when it comes to YouTube? Because you're here for a reason, and you're interested in using YouTube, so what is your biggest struggle at the moment? Reva, wanna answer that? Well, it's hard to say what the biggest as there are quite a few, but because I'm, do so many different things it's like, who am I targeting with my YouTube? And I have so many different ideas, but what do I just focus in on and put out there to the world? Very good question, does anyone else relate to that idea overload? And if you're watching at home let us know in the comments. Anyone relate to that? Too many ideas, don't know how to execute, okay, we're gonna handle that today. We're gonna check that off the list, I got you. So there's a couple of things that people talk about when they talk about the struggles with YouTube, I've heard it all and I find it really interesting because like I said, yo...
u're in this room or you're watching at home, wherever you might be you're here for a reason, you're obviously a little inclined or interested in using YouTube, but something's holding you back or you feel like you're plateauing or you just aren't getting something right, you're stuck. So what are those things? Some of the struggles are, I just don't have time, anyone, just don't have time. (laughter) Don't have time, I don't have fancy equipment, I just don't have the right equipment, I need to go break the bank on cameras and mics and lighting and you look at the best of the best on YouTube and you go, I'm one person, how am I supposed to compete with that. So that's very common and I fully understand that. You don't understand the technical aspect of it, the background, the optimization, the distribution, those words sound maybe a little foreign to you. I'm gonna make that very easy and simplified to understand today. Don't know what to make your videos about, Reva. (laughter) It's idea overload, there's just too much going on, you have all these different ideas for your business, but you make videos and then you hear crickets and you go, well that didn't work so I don't even know what's going to work. And again, you posted one video, it didn't work and you're feeling defeated, I completely understand that as well and I've been there. And you don't feel confident on camera, I want everyone to say yes if they've been there. Yes. (laughter) We're gonna fix that today too and actually Laura will be our guinea pig for that (laughter), for that segment and I think you'll very much so enjoy it. Okay, so we're gonna get rid of all of those fears today. We're gonna make those a non-issue for you. So anyone who has those fears here, let's just take a sigh of relief, deep breath, you're not gonna have to worry about them anymore, okay. But I get that this is not for everyone, I get that YouTube is not for everyone and I'm not trying to push this on anyone, but like I said, if you're here, if you're watching, if you're in this room there's a reason. So if you're thinking, this might not be for you, if you're not ready to build a fan base, you're not ready to actually have an audience following you. If you're not there, this probably isn't for you. If you think this will make you an overnight success. (laughter) I like that you guys feel me on that one, because there is no such thing. And everything takes time and I think something that everyone in this room really needs to understand and remember, and if anyone watching at home can relate to this, if you've ever thought, uh, I only got like 20 views on that video or I only got five subscribers, that's still five human beings, that's still 20 individual people who have taken time out of their days and out of their lives to interact with your content and watch it. Don't discount that, because those five people, those 20 people, those 100 people are going to be the people that stick with you and actually there's people in this room today who have been with me from day one and the reason that is the case is because I respect the fact that each number is a person. So are we all clear on that? Doesn't matter where you're at right now, anybody who's taking the time to (mumbles) you, they're real people, respect that and that's gonna bring you further faster than just trying to focus on vanity numbers. Just wanna make that clear. (laughter) But I get, again, that it might not be for you if you think you're not ready to be seen on a much bigger stage and create an even bigger imprint on the world. Who wants to create a big impact in the world? I love it, everyone in the room, love it. So by the end of this class we're gonna find your fans. We're gonna figure out who they are and what they want so you know what to say. We're also going to set up your channel for success. There's probably a few steps, let's be honest, but a few of you are missing, I actually looked at a lot of your channels, that we can implement quickly, in probably under 30 minutes, to get it set up for success so you're actually attracting the right people, that's really important. We're also going to create videos with confidence from concept to actually uploading them. So you know every step along the journey. We're gonna show you how to analyze your videos for success, how to know what to create moving forward, what's working for your audience and actually dive into that. And it's much easier than it sounds because I am not an analytical person, I don't really like data, I don't like numbers, but I'm gonna simplify it for you. And I'm also gonna show you how to use YouTube to build a loyal fan base for life. Who here's a boss in the Be Your Own Boss Mastermind? Ah, I love it, cool. So my bosses, my people, and I'm sure there's people watching at home as well, that's my tribe and my whole tribe was built through YouTube so I'm gonna show you guys how to do the exact same thing. And again, I would not be on this stage if I didn't have that tribe. So, that's what you're gonna learn today, are we excited? Yeah. Okay, so by the end of today you will have a perfect video uploaded to YouTube by the end of the class. Cool, are we in for the challenge? Yes. I love it. Okay, so you need to stay tuned. If you are a creative, if you are a consultant, if you are a coach of any kind, if you're an entertainer or if you're an entrepreneur. Put your hand up if you're an entrepreneur in this room. Lots of entrepreneurs. Entertainers, juggler maybe, entertainer, love it. I've heard of a juggler, is the juggler here? Oh, the juggler's not here. (laughter) Missed out, Stew got her. (laughter) We have all different types of people in the room. Creatives, consultants, coaches, entrepreneurs, entertainers, if you are that at home watching, this whole class is for all of those different types of people. So, why me? If you haven't met me before, if you don't know who the heck this woman is that's talking about YouTube, I'll give you a bit of a background on what I've done and been able to do because of YouTube. So I built my own channel to over 150,000 subscribers and 10,000,000 views, it started by accident, to be completely honest with you. I had a social media agency, does anyone have a consultancy or an agency here? Okay, great, Jarrod, yes, of course. Monique, you have one as well. So I'm sure you can relate to this, have you ever had burnout because you've got so many clients, yes. (laughter) A big shake of the head. So I had so many clients in my consultancy, I was doing it for about four or five years and it just got to the point where I couldn't really keep up and so I couldn't keep getting on the phone and answering the same questions or going to meetings and answering the same questions. I had to figure out a way to clone myself. So, I sat down one day in my living room in front of a window in my apartment with basically pajamas on and not a lot of makeup and my hair wasn't washed that day and I filmed a tutorial video and I just sent it to my clients out of pure desperation. And the topic was, how to use Periscope (laughter), you remember this, for your business and it was my first tutorial video on my channel. So I film it, send it to my clients, answered their question, because all of them at the time, it was March of 2015, everyone was asking me, how do I use live streaming for my business, how do I use this new app. So I talked about Periscope, I talked about Meerkat, if anyone remembers Meerkat. Compared the two, taught them how to use it for business, sent it just to my clients, had pretty much no subscribers on my channel at the time, didn't use the channel, I think I've had it since 2009, but it had random family videos, I think maybe some cat videos, I don't know, were up there. No intention behind it. I woke up the next day, that video had 2,000 views. So you can imagine my shock and a little bit of embarrassment when I realized that 2,000 people had seen this, no production value, shot on a webcam in front of a window video. But to my surprise I saw the comments section had hundreds of comments and I was like, no, oh, no, it's YouTube, this is gonna be bad. And I went into the comments section and everyone was saying, wow, I get it, you taught that so well. Thank you so much, can you do a video on X, can you do another video on Instagram? And I went, oh, maybe I'm on to something, maybe this is a happy accident and it certainly was. So, from there I realized the power of search on YouTube. So why that video performed super well, and we're gonna analyze this and basically reverse engineer it so you can start applying this to your businesses, not accidentally, actually on purpose, and part of the reason that video did so well is because I struck while the iron was hot. Periscope was a trending topic, so that's one clue, trending topic, no one else had made a video on it. So I was the first to make a video on it. I ranked number one automatically because I had no competition at the time. And it was highly searched because people wanted to know about it. So the search volume was really, really high and I didn't have a lot of competition. That right there tells you a lot. So kept making videos and made one a week, I was not going for five a week. I was like, let's focus on quality over quantity. And after one year of doing this I had 50,000 subscribers from scratch and 3,000,000 views. Quick question, what would happen to your business, Alice, what would happen to your business if in the next year you had 3,000,000 people who knew about you? It would grow exponentially. I would hope. Yeah, you would hope and it would. So that's basically what happened to me is I went from a small consultancy, I never promoted my business for four years, I didn't talk about it, I didn't reach out for clients, it was all word of mouth and that's what I relied on and then all of a sudden 3,000,000 people knew who I was, wanted to work with me from all over the world, I booked my first speaking engagement within a month of being on YouTube. I had clients from all over the world. It allowed me to create a digital product, digital course because I realized that I couldn't serve millions of people at once, that just wasn't doable. So I thought, how can I make an impact by helping people all over the world but not actually spending my one-to-one time because it's not physically possible. Create a digital product and built my business up to where it is now. We have tribe of hundreds of thousands of people who are in our community, we built the business to a place where I went from one person to a team of now nine people, which is still a little overwhelming for me, but it's a very exciting time and it's fully possible for all of you in this room. And it started organically, it started without paid advertising, it started strictly using your knowledge and using the search capabilities on YouTube. So that's how I built my channel. And I have helped over 1,000 bosses, we're actually at about almost 2,000 people, entrepreneurs, bosses, I've helped them build their brands and businesses using YouTube, that's crazy. So the imprint and the impact that I've been able to make is supporting people and my mission and my business is to create success ripples. I want everyone in this room and everyone watching at home to be successful in your own right by being able to fully share yourself and your knowledge and your genius with the world and a bigger stage. And what helps you do that, YouTube. Thank you, I wasn't even expecting a response on that, but yes, let's say it all together, what helps you do that? YouTube (laughter), perfect. Alright, so Forbes also, as Lor mentioned, named me as one of the 20 Must Watch YouTube Channels That Will Change Your Business. And another really funny thing happens when you start putting yourself out there and talking about your genius zone, you start getting press recognition. Wasn't even interested in PR, wasn't interested in press when I had my little consultancy because I probably couldn't handle the demand that it would give to the business, once I started on YouTube I've been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Entrepreneur Inc, Fast Company and the list goes on and I'm still so humbled by that and so astonished by that, but the thing is, all of those press features came to me from YouTube. People found me on YouTube and said, hey, she really knows her stuff, I wanna write about her. Wouldn't that be nice?

I make videos professionally. Perfect videos will not necessarily do great on YouTube, and not perfect videos may do well on YouTube. The secret is "the strategy behind them". Sunny´s class is great to help you give your videos a better chance for a "successful life" on YouTube. Thank you from Costa Rica.

Awesome class! When I launched my latest YouTube channel, I watched a TON of Sunny's videos for guidance on how to build great content and an audience! I had decent initial growth, but when work got busy, I stopped creating long form content. I'm launching my Patreon this month and was pleasantly surprised to see this course with Sunny on CreativeLive! My favorite part was diving into analytics. If I'm being honest, I've ignored this part for a long time because it seemed complicated and arduous. Sunny made it easy to understand and pointed to the exact places I need to look to see why my top ranking videos are getting views. I will also be stealing the Outdoor Partner Workout idea, since I am a fitness professional ;)
