How to add drop shadows to an image or logo in InDesign
okay in this video we're going to look at special effects and in design there's not many of them in in design, it's more of a Photoshop job, but there's some basic stuff here in in design. The main one that I use is drop shadow and it's really handy for say this logo, it's against kind of a model background. We can turn drop shadow, watch this, turn it off. It's easy enough to read, but it's even easier to read with a drop shadow on it. Okay, so we're going to show you how to do that. Let's go and do it. Okay. First thing we need to do is we're going to select on this logo here, not the center of it. Just with the black arrow click anywhere but your content grabber and let's go up to object. Let's go down to effects and here are our effects. Okay? We're going to start with drop shadow, we're going to move mine just over a little bit and notice preview was on by default for mine you have to turn yours on. Okay? And you'll see there's a drop shadow on off. On off. Okay? When it comes to ...
the drop shadow, the opacity is important, it's how dark it is. Okay, you can see I can lighten it up, darken it up, 75% is I don't know why. Always the best one. Okay, distance is how far away it is, you can click up, you can see it's moving further and further away. Okay, But mine too, maybe .5, maybe even lower. What was it on by default. I can't remember something like that offset is exactly like distance except you can control the up and the down rather than this one does left and right or X and y at the same time. So you can say actually I just want it to go out that way. Okay, so I'm going to put that one back to what that one was and the angle is which way the kind of like suns hitting it and casting the shadow? It's kind of you can see here, angle at 1 35 it's coming down from this angle you can say drag this little guy around and it's now coming up from the bottom up. This way I find top left or straight up and down is the key? Okay, so I'm gonna use 90 for strapping down from my one sizes, how kind of like fuzzy the edges are. Watch this if I make it really big, it's kind of getting big and broad, it's a little bit hard to see I guess. So I'm going to move it out. Let's click OK, and just drag it out here so you can kind of see a bit more, you can see the size now is kind of like this big broad option to get back into it. Like I have, if I have closed it down, you go back to object back to effects and click on drop shadow again. So that's the size. So I moved the size down, you'll see, it gets sharper and sharper and sharper until it's kind of like more of a hue. Run the outside. Okay, up to you. We don't use spread and we don't use noise. You can play around with them. It looks a little lame now for me. I only ever use the drop shadow. There are other ones. Okay. I just don't find a purpose for them. So let's have a little look at them. So I'm gonna until drop shadow and take in the shadow. So it puts like a shadow inside the logo. It's kind of cool. Don't you really use it very much? Okay, I'm gonna take that outer glow. Okay. And it's got kind of like a halo effect on the outside. It's kind of cool. And the one thing that you'll notice is that I've turned this tick on and off and you'll see that these I can't change it is because can you see I'm still selected blue here. I still got drop shadow selected but I'm kind of turning this on and off. You can do that separately. So click on the word outer glow, then I can go to this and say actually I want to make my size bigger and it gets a bigger halo effect in the glow and turn that one off. That one on. Just glowing around the outside. A little hard to see because it's a white logo. Okay, you can't really tell it all. Be able to boss, you can make it look kind of three D. Ish, not my favorite. That's alright. You might love it satin. Don't even really know what that does is we're like Beverly and boss but kind of more like a pillow. Okay, basic feather, the directional feather. All of these, you can have a play around with them, don't use them, you might love them, but it's a bit of experimentation. The one that you use drop shadow a lot, mainly because in the exact same instance we've got here is that this white logo is against the background and it's maybe just not as clear as we'd like it to be. So we want to lift it off and push it. It's really good for white text against a model background. Okay, and if you want to go further and do some more exciting, you want to turn into a neon sign, doing cool stuff and that'll be the job Photoshop. So what you do is you open up this logo in Photoshop and that is the tool to do more special special effects. This just has the real basics here in, in design, Photoshop would be the one for the more exciting ones

I think Dan is very good at explaining and breaking down complex content. I like the way there are lots of small sessions which is good for keeping focus. I would advise anyone who does this course and is taking notes to label which session the notes are referring to as I have struggled to find a few looking back and this helped me. It really made me realise how much I didn't know and had been fudging. Thank you Dan I will be taking plenty more of your courses in the coming months it's been a great help.

Excellent course, instructor is great well spoken, clear and a great teacher. I highly recommend this class for beginners and those who learned indesign on their own.
